  1. I'm not his biggest fan, obviously, but he certainly has his good points. I do think he legitimately loves baseball. He does treat fans well and he seems generous with both his time and money. He treats young players well. And, as you noted, he knows the game. He would be good in the booth. As an aside, so would AJ. That would be a fun booth.
  2. Both guys are still good prospects and both were very good picks.
  3. Sure, but 30% isn't everyone and ARod was using well after the "Roid era." I do think it's fair, even if you want to give players a mulligan for roid use before testing, to excuse that behavior in 2014.
  4. The two big catchers probably don't slip to 9 or 10 but next years draft is supposed to be pretty loaded - on par with the 2011 draft. So we'll still get a nice pick in the top 10. And weird things still happen. Groome was #1 or 2 on many boards but fell to 11. Anderson at 3 was a safety pick. So, we'll see.
  5. I could see them getting the 9th pick. They might finish better than Dbacks, Padres, Reds, Brewers, Braves, A's, Angels, Rays. And the Phillies are dropping so that could be another.
  6. In fairness, that doesn't really apply just to people who oppose PED users. We, as fans, dislike players because they preen after a HR or play for the Packers or went to Duke or are Bryce Harper, etc, etc. I think disliking a guy like ARod, who violated MLB's PED policy after testing was in place, isn't that out of line. Baseball's roid era hasn't aged well and much of that period feels inauthentic. Platitudes that "all players were doing it" is a mere way to wish away the controversy. ARod's PED use was pretty substantial and the idea that he only started using in Texas was laughable.
  7. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/17127981/ichiro-reaches-3000-hits-following-meticulous-standards Pretty amazing considering he didn't start until age 27. 30th player to get to that milestone. Can you name the other 29? http://www.sporcle.com/games/g/3000hits (I got 27)
  8. And, of course, that is not true but it does make it easier to ignore.
  9. In a vacuum, I don't hate Buxton going to AAA. He has sucked and hopefully the AAA coaches can help him b/c the ML ones can't. I am bothered by the coaching staff's approach to him. He has a 1.000 OPS in AAA. He's a big time prospect on the Mauer level. Yet it seems like they have him bunt every other game, they pinch hit for him every third game, they sit him after a few more starts.

  11. Hopefully, he can get some steady PT and at-bats before we call him up and yank him in and out of the lineup again.
  12. They also signed Lewis Thorpe and Chih-wei Hu those years. I can't find a complete list of international signings/team/year anywhere.
  13. Here are the top 30 signings from 2010. I think it's still too early to write off that class but there are some huge misses on that list. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/international-affairs/2011/2611344.html
  14. Here's an article from BA from 2014 - http://www.baseballamerica.com/international/which-teams-have-signed-the-most-international-prospects-2/#hsdeqqyOgRpMPPQj.97 It notes the Twins have the 3rd most international signings in their handbook and ranked them in the top 5 for international signings since 2006. That seems to suggest that, at least before 2014, the Twins were doing ok. They are just now seeing that payoff at the ML level. I don't really see the validity that the Twins aren't doing much in recent years - esp since that complaint would be based entirely on rankings, which you have argued aren't valid for measuring success of a class.
  15. The Pohlad's aren't going to go out of the pool. It's the same complaint we have when they don't sign Grienkie in free agency. It's not going to happen so just move on. We have ****ty owners. The FO seems to be doing ok with the hand they are dealt.
  16. Who isn't? The gripe has been the Twins don't sign any big name guys. Well, we showed that they did by using BA's list. So you moved the goal posts to BA doesn't define the big names. OK. Fine. So now you want to grade by results. Fine. We point out that the 2011 and 12 classes are just now entering rookie or A ball. Earlier classes had pretty good results. So now you want to complaint about the later classes based entirely on rankings. Do you see the circular logic problem?
  17. Yeah, coming into the year, many of us thought this would be a fun offense. Nice to see it happening.
  18. Ignoring the waiver difficulties, Kopech has some issues - PED ban, fight with teammates, strange mechanics - that probably scare off the Twins.
  19. I would doubt that. First, Ryan has always been a pretty good company man. We don't know as much about the international stuff but his draft was the draft of a guy looking out for the longterm goals of the organization. I wouldn't think Ryan would hurt our international signing work and since we had a pool in place, I'm pretty sure Ryan was going to spend it and the GM isn't the guy who does the ground work there. And, frankly, I suspect the Twins were talking about their July 2nd plans before May. And again, we made big signings in 2012 (Minier), 2013 (Diaz), 2015 (Javier) and went quantity in 2014 and 2016 (IIRC). I have no idea how we can judge the 2014 class (for instance). We're just now seeing the 2012 and 13 classes start to matriculate into rookie ball. I think the 2011 signings look good b/c of Jorge and Romero. So, as long as the Twins spend their pool - which they will - I'm not going to worry.
  20. Bluntly, we're signing 16 year old kids so any return is 6 to 8 years away. We're just starting to see returns from the 09 group. It's way too early to decide how they've done under the second Ryan regime. Some years they've gone quality and others they've gone quantity. Just like other teams. IIRC, and I might not, Amaurys Minier was a huge signing in 2012 and he's just now - at 20 - having a solid season in low A ball. Same with Lewin Diaz, signed a year later. I think in 2011, the Twins went quantity and nabbed both Felix Jorge and Fernando Romero for .5m combined
  21. Oh. That kind of auction ...
  22. They own Blizzard, right? World of Warcraft online games and such?
  23. I think it's tough to make that claim when just last year they got a top ten guy.
  24. From some of the tweets that were out there (and what the Jays did do) it seems like they were probably offering Hutchinson plus a prospect. I wonder if they were offering Hutchinson and Reid Foley and the Twins wanted more of if they wouldn't agree to put Reid Foley into the deal. But I'm with you, I'd love to know.
