  1. Well, he'd go back to Boston, he wouldn't be exposed to waivers. But generally I agree. My understanding with Haley was that he was a low ceiling/high floor backend starter type that might be in the mix for the 5th spot. The Twins had the first pick in the rule v draft. There were players with incredibly higher upside than Haley that we knew would have to be buried in the bullpen but we took a guy who might be ready to pitch in the majors soon. Haley isn't that guy so it doesn't really make sense to hide him. Hell, even JR Graham saw a lot of action and got an occasional spot start.
  2. Mike, I think you're arguments lose a little bit of their merit when you're complaining about back up catchers and clearly stop gap bullpen arms. Sure, Giminez isn't much. Would we rather have Garver sitting on the bench or playing in AAA? The Twins have some very exciting and young bullpen arms not yet on the 40 man roster (Jay, Burdi) and a few that are (Chargois). None are ready April 1st. The Twins are starting 6 former top 100 prospects that are 27 and younger in their lineup on opening day. Yes, the new FO didn't bring those guys in but they didn't block them either. That should be exciting. They changed the rotation more than it looks like at first blush. They removed 73 starts from last years starters and added a rookie to the rotation to go with 4 vets under team control. I don't think the complaints about 'being older' are valid. It's a young team so adding a stop gap vet isn't a big deal.
  3. I'm really looking forward to opening day, actually. I might even use a sick day. Those of us old enough to remember the 94-2000 Twins have had worse things. As bad as this team was last year the young talent is pretty exciting.
  4. For some reason, I think Rosario is either going to be amazing or horrible. No in between this year. I'm hoping for a huge .300+ avg with pop great defense and solid baserunning but he could also do .260/.290/.450. I just think it'll be one of the two. So let's hope for something like .303/.333/.470

  6. I think it was the shoulder injury at the end of the 2013 season. His mechanics were never the same. Big pitchers have lots of moving parts so you muck up one and it all just falls apart. That's not to say it couldn't be both. The way I see it, since 2012, the Twins have only had about 6 pitchers with the stuff to be legit #1/2 type pitchers - Meyer, Stewart, Jay and maybe Berrios, Thorpe and Romero. Jay and Meyer are pen arms now. Stewart's mechanics are inconsistent. Berrios dominated the minors and Romero and Thorpe are bouncing back from injuries.
  7. I have no idea where Haley falls on those lists. He's more ready now than Gonsalves, for instance, but how much that matters? -shrug- The Twins need SP depth. I'm not sure he helps there but that's my assumption. But I'm really worried that he doesn't seem to have Molitor's trust. We saw how that worked last year for Meyer and Berrios.
  8. The Meyer thing is done. He lost his control. It happens. He's, what? 27? 10 walks in 10 innings? I'd rather have Hector.
  9. http://www.startribune.com/falvey-leaves-players-open-mouthed-by-sending-park-to-rochester/417665353/ I love Reusse and, unlike some, I don't think he makes **** up or pushes an agenda. I think he legitimately wants the Twins to be good. He's saying that players were shocked that Park didn't make the roster and Reusse thinks he knows why: "Molitor wanted veteran Nick Tepesch added to the roster as his long reliever. Falvey made him keep Justin Haley, the Rule 5 draftee, over Tepesch. And since Haley doesn't figure to be reliable as a pitcher to get the Twins from say the fourth to the seventh when needed, it was decided to have two long relievers already on the 40-man roster -- meaning, Tyler Duffey to go with Haley."
  10. Let's keep in mind that this is NOT the same starting staff as last year. They've removed 73 starts from last years' group. I'm not sure how this group will do but it's not the same starters.
  11. People wanted Santiago cut all offseason because May was a better option. He's gone. So we can get rid of people (and I think Santana is a pretty good place to start) but I think fans tend to forget about how important depth is - esp starting pitching depth. And this place blew up when the Twins did make some moves - like removing Park from the 40 man or letting Jake Reed get taken in the rule v or the all-time Joe Benson thread.
  12. Sure, I think Chargois and Berrios have much better upside than others. Murphy? He's looked pretty bad for over a year now. A plus defender as a back-up makes more sense until Garver is ready. But Berrios isn't ready today. I would have put Chargois on the ML roster but I also didn't see him in ST. His numbers are pretty bad so maybe there is something to work on. But the reality is that the team is pretty young - especially the hitters - and they just need reps. Pitching side is worse off. I agree that many of these guys are stopgaps until Chargois, Burdi Duffey, Jay etc establish themselves in the pen. I hope that starts to happen this year since I fully thought it would happen last year. But the rotation is what it is. Behind those five we have Berrios (who didn't pitch much), Duffey/Haley (both in the pen) and some AAA vets. Could be a lot of 8-6 ball games this year.
  13. It's pretty clear they are trying to keep some players and they have a 25 man and 40 man roster crunch. Yes, we could just cut guys but that also kills our depth. We need Hector Santiago, for example, because pitchers (May) get hurt. (See what I did there?) Park isn't a sure thing but putting him back on the 40 man roster means cutting someone and giving him a spot that we aren't sure he can hold down. And it blocks Vargas if Vargas is the hot player in AAA instead.
  14. Well, as inexperienced as Falvey is, Lavine was a legitimately good hire for GM. Give him time. He can eventually construct a pretty good roster.
  15. I think it's pretty clear that when McKay is drafted he will only focus on one thing. Probably pitching.
  16. Gardy was a hell of a lot better manager than Molly. And Molly is a close friend to the owner, so that's the reason he's still around. As for this FO seeming a lot like the old FO, well, two things: 1) It's still very early and 2) There really might not be a huge difference between "old school" and new school and $$$$ might still be very important to creating a baseball team.
  17. I'm not sure it's fair to say they got older. They have a roookie in the rotation and a rule v in the pen. And obviously they have a ton of young guys in the starting lineup. Most of the complaining is that 30 year old Park is in AAA and 26 year old Santana is in the majors. I don't think they have the 25 best players on the roster right now but it's not age that's the problem.
  18. Honestly, the one real problem (in my view) is Danny Santana. He got the most AB in ST and was awful. Pretty clearly a Molitor mandated move. I'd have removed him from the 40 man roster. But keeping Park in AAA for a month isn't horrible. He was hot last year in ST, too. Let's see how he is doing a month from now. And it also lets Grossman play more. If Grossman can be an on-base machine, we're ok. If he's not, they'll release him in a month. Nothing wrong with finding out what he can do. Duffey in the pen might be the best place for him although I'd probably have let him try starting in AAA one more year first. Haley needs to be kept. Mejia is a good addition. I hope the FO has a short hook for Hughes.
  19. Here's the trailer for the IT remake. http://themuse.jezebel.com/are-you-ready-to-it-your-pants-1793788387 Looks pretty good, actually.
  20. I think the last real player to do that was Brooks Kieschnick for the Brewers in 2003 and 2004. And he wasn't really a double threat but he did play the field some. Mostly he was a good enough pinch hitter who could pitch in blow outs. But in those two seasons he managed about 96 innings of relief work to a 95 ERA+ while putting up a 115 OPS+ in 144 PA.
  21. I said before ST that he'd be an all-star this year. Wish his ST had been better but I'll stick with it. Something close to .265/.350/.520 with ok defense. Top 10 in homers, close to what Seth's prediction is.
  22. John Olerud was a great hitter. If I knew McKay would be that, I'd take him #1 in a heartbeat. 16 seasons, 58 WAR, 129 OPS+? Yes, please.
  23. Callis' response to fan questions on the draft. Suggests McKay could go #1. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/220538972/pipeline-inbox-2017-mlb-draft-questions/ Also of note is he thinks Beck is a later half of the first round guy. I'd love it if the Twins could somehow get him to fall to 35 and go overslot to nab him. Probably can't happen but what a nice dream.
  24. Maybe we should keep this thread alive. He won the Australian Open and Indian Wells, beating Nadal in both. Now it looks like they might meet again in Miami. I really hope Federer has a magical year.
