  1. It's not hindsight for many. This sounds to me like an argument that the current Twins coaching staff needs upgrading. Is that your point? The Twins don't have the staff to get the most out of players? Not to mention, there's no guarantee Pressly needed any "unlocking." As Spycake and others have pointed out, Pressly was already really good, and getting better, when dealt.
  2. "Lethal flamethrower." I guess it's sort of like "grave" danger. Is there any other kind?
  3. I could live with acquiring Smith and a RHer such as Ian Kennedy. Smith would be a great fit for the pen. Pay up. That's the cost of not doing much in the off season or elsewhere.
  4. Same for May. He hasn't been a starter since mid 2015. BTW..."lethal flamethrowers??"
  5. What I take from the list of "a lot of seemingly tantalizing relief options out there" is that there really isn't much likely to be out there. It's going to be difficult to improve the bullpen.
  6. Headline is wrong. Should be "1 bad inning makes awful uniforms forgettable."
  7. I don't trust Tyler Duffey and probably never will. On nights when everything is working, he's effective. Those nights aren't frequent enough, IMO. To quote myself semi-quoting our old friend Denny Green, from a game thread back there somewhere..."He is who we thought he was."
  8. Concur. The conversation for best ever starts and ends with Babe Ruth. It's not close.
  9. 2 IP the night before for Rogers. Pretty telling on how Baldelli views the rest of the pen.
  10. I dont think it's so much the actual walk, as what the additional walk(s) say about command. If you're missing outside the strike zone, you're most likely missing inside the strike zone as well. And those pitches down the middle are the ones that can really cause damage. Last night, for example, the leaded walk in the 5th hurt, but no more than a lead off single. It was the cookie to Cuthbert that really did the damage. If that pitch is on a corner, it's a lazy fly out.
  11. “Plate discipline” is not Sano’s problem. Contact is the problem.
  12. Over his last five starts, Perez’s ERA has gone from 2.95 to 4.28. 24 IP, 20 earned runs.
  13. Welp, the OP turned out to be correct. Sano's plate discipline has taken a deeper dive.
  14. In and of itself, the strikeout is no worse than any other out. Well of course it is. Why do pitchers try to strike hitters out? Why are we looking for bullpen help that can miss bats?
  15. Many teams, including Boston often last night and including sometimes the Twins, when shifting against a LH hitter, now position the third baseman at or near his normal spot, until there are 2 strikes. This takes away the free bunt, and opens the normal SS position. Otherwise, agreed. Take advantage of the virtually free base hit.
  16. The STrib recap says Kepler pinch hit for a "banged up" Gonzalez. I was wondering last night why he pinch hit. Hopefully nothing serious.
  17. he swung through everything last night. In the zone, out of the zone. Fastballs. Breaking balls. Changes ups. Warm up pitches. Pitchers tossing balls underhand to umpires asking for a new ball. Pitches thrown in the bullpen. Even his warm up swings in the on deck circle drew air.
  18. Still a very effective LOOGY. Would be nice to have in the postseason, but tougher to carry during the regular season.
  19. According to the Boston papers, they had decided beforehand to limit his innings and pitches. A "mutual decision." They're trying to maintain his health over the long season. He has a lot of innings and pitches on that arm over his career.
