  1. My lineup would be like this: 1. Santana - SS 2. Schafer/Hicks - CF [bring in Carew to teach them how to drag bunt.] 3. Mauer - 1B [cough, cough, Contract] 4. Vargas - DH [showed he could hit cleanup last year. Need to see if he's for real] 5. Arcia - RF [is this THE year?] 6. Dozier - 2B [low BA, high K's, high number of doubles and HRs. Perfect spot] 7. Hunter - LF [if nothing else, can have Dozier's back] 8. Plouffe - 3B [was last year for real?] 9. Suzuki - C [last year was for real] I'm not big on having good-great defensive guys that get the bat knocked out of their hands. Bunt, baby, bunt. Probably a few to many K's in this lineup, but could be fun to watch. And, honestly, if I could, I'd trade Mauer. If......
  2. By 'floating' them on the waiver wire, you can gauge interest in them and pull them back if a team makes a claim. Good way to check that others value them as much as you do ;-)
  3. And how about all the soft-tossers that were successful as closers? Todd Jones it the first I could think of. Who was the closer for the Orioles that Earl Weaver referred to as his 'six pack'? As in Earl got so nervous when he was pitching that he burned through a six pack of cigarettes.
  4. I've said it before and I'll say it again: trade Perkins NOW. When your team has lost 90 games in 4 seasons, a guy with 30 saves is an expensive, unnecessary luxury. At 32 yrs old in March, now is the time to trade him for a high-end minor leaguer or 2 and maybe some lower level prospects. Or 2.
  5. I'm in the chorus of "Don't sign either to an extension". Dozier is what he is: a good fielding 2Ber with some power. But he's no Bobby Grich. He's seems to have settled in on sub .250 average and 100+ K's. I've seen enough of Plouffe to say no extension either. I haven't seen the consistency. I'd be using the 25th spot to bring up player for auditions and floating both on waiver wires by mid season.
  6. With you on Sano. We need to 1st see how his swing is and if he can get back in the groove at 3B. Then we need to see how he handles the breaking ball at AAA.
  7. Seth, I really like your enthusiasm, but I have severe doubts that there will be any call-ups this year. Unless, of course, alien beings transform themselves into the Twins minor league development team. I'm wondering how Vargas will look this year after MLB scouting reports are more complete.
  8. I'm with you on Gibson. I believe his only problem last year was the coaching staff. They NEVER should have allowed him to pitch all those innings he did last year. Same as Hughes. The staff should have been fired for that alone. I'm a little different than you on Arcia. I'm going with "he WAS a free swinger". Brunansky had a big affect on Arcia in the last half of the year. I'm on the 'breakout' side on Arcia. Hey, there's a new coaching staff in town. They can't be worse, right?
  9. Does anyone else have a problem with moving Eduardo Escobar to the bench to accommodate Santana at SS? With the lack of any other good option in CF, I don't really see a need or reason to make this move.
  10. I'm all in on Arcia, too. Brunansky made some really good progress with Arcia last year. All Arcia needs to do is just keep listening to Bruno. Oh yeah, and suck it up a little bit on defense :-)
  11. Count me in on Tonkin. Is there any real reason to not give the young guys in the minors a shot?
  12. So, I'm gonna be the one naysayer. I keep looking at his year to year stats and there's definitely a pattern: Starting in 2010, it goes good year, bad year up to last seasons good year. I also look at 2010 and 2012 and see those 2 years Hughes tossed his highest number of innings up to that time. Last year, his highest number of innings to date. In the previous down years, I believe he was injured. I still think the Twins were foolish to continue starting Hughes [and Gibson] when the season was already lost, by a WIDE margin. I would have held off on an extension until the middle of the new season. Sorry....
  13. "He's left-handed and he has a pulse". :-) Reminds me of a scouting report I read years ago on Ed Vandenberg [at least I think it was Ed] "He has the continuing ability to remain left-handed".
  14. If Neil Allen can teach May how to put some movement on his fastball, I think he can be special.
  15. Question: If Meyer gets promoted, what do the Twins do with all the veteran pitchers that they still owe a lot of money to? More than anything, I think that would be his biggest obstacle. He had some control and health issues again, so a start at AAA may be for the best.
  16. The move of Mientkiewicz, by itself, is a move that makes more sense than moving him from A-ball to the majors as a bench coach. He can continue his work with, hopefully, the young players he has already helped. However, let's not forget that the AA position was made available when Jeff Smith requested a demotion to A to be closer to his home. To me, that shows a lack of commitment. If I were in charge, I'm not sure Smith would have a job right now.
  17. Honestly, I don't see anything in Hicks' past or present that says he will ever be a major league player. Seriously, his swing from the left side is that bad and he got to the Majors? IF management actually signed Tori Hunter to mentor Hicks, that's a pretty big waste of $10mil. There are coaches to do that. At this point in time, Hicks belongs in the minors. Good defense does not makeup for the bad attitude, horrible batting skills and apparently not taking direction from the coaching staff, i.e. he decided on his own to stop switch hitting. He deserves to be at AA, where Doug M. can get him back on course.
  18. I'm with you. Nunez can play SS, 3B, was part of that horrible situation where the Twins somehow did not have an OF deemed worthy for a callup and may possibly play 2B as well. Not sure if Nunez has ever played 2B. To me, Punto would be more of a non-hitting roadblock for others to advance.
  19. I hate giving up on anyone who's only 22, but Niko's stats in 5 years at A-ball do not show progress you'd like to see.
  20. Thanks for creating this list, Cody. Sometimes I think I like reading scouting reports more than actually watching a game :-)
  21. 1st of all, the human shoulder is not built to throw overhand. It's built more for a sidearm or under-handed deliver. You don't see too many of those in the MLB. Throwing 97-100 MPH, well eventually that will catchup with you unless you're a freak like Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens. JR Graham is 6ft 195lbs. He should not have been allowed to throw 100mph at least until his are matured more. That being said: he's still only 24, has obviously gotten his pop back and the Twins are smart to move him to the bullpen. I'd say send him to any level in the minors where the temperatures are the highest. Get that shoulder loosened up and let's see what he can do!
  22. Here's hoping they turn into a very good Major League rotation. Then again, if you're actually talking about the Major League rotation: Ouchie !!
  23. At 25, Meyer should be in the majors. Or at least a mid-season call up. I was fairly surprised they called up May 1st. May and Meyer in the bullpen until a spot opens? Hmm, not at the cost of further stretching out their arms at AAA. I'd be cautious on both Hughes and Gibson. Both pitched more innings than they should have, especially Gibson. Hughes has a bit of a history of having one really good year of 30+ starts and something happening the next year. Signing multiple #3-4 type pitchers to 3+ year contracts seems like a bad idea considering they hype behind several of the Twins minor league pitchers. But then again, there's the whole 'hype' thing....
  24. If attitude did not come from the manager and coaching staff, it's sure not going come from a 39 year old with declining skills. For $10mil, I can hire a lot of cheerleaders!
  25. If I were to take a long shot bet on anyone, it would be Johan. I hate seeing a good guy like him bowing out of the game due to injuries....
