  1. I don't believe the primary reason of Hick's new leg kick had anything to do with generating more power. It's a timing mechanism to just hit the ball.
  2. Didn't Latroy Hawkins say basically the same thing? Becoming a relief pitcher was the best thing that happened in his career. And still is.
  3. I'm with all those disappointed the May was sent down. When taking on a LONG term rebuilding project, I want to hear about the future, not the patches.
  4. No matter what the lower-level stats say, this will be a huge year for Walker at AA Chattanooga.
  5. I'm hoping there's some young talent that'll slip through the waiver wire that the Twins can pickup. And it's great to hear Jim Pohlad say that. Then again, he know's the team will not be competitive this year.
  6. This is when I would have fired Gardy. Out of shape again, growing a scraggly beard: This is a guy who completely gave up on his team. http://cdn.fansided.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/2/files/2015/01/ron-gardenhire-mlb-minnesota-twins-detroit-tigers-850x560.jpg
  7. Let's stop all the nonsense talk about Milone and Pelfry. Trevor May had a bad start with the Twins once he was called up. I can't find the splits right now, but he got significantly better as the season ended. It's called development. Why would the Twins move him back to the minors when he showed he could thrive in the big leagues? The only thing the Twins should be doing with Milone and Pelfry now is showcasing them for other teams. BTW: LEN III has said that Pelfry will not have anymore starts against MLBers. He's out of the picture.
  8. Per Ryan: "He's got the speed, the arm, the range, the base stealing abilities. It's just a matter of the bat." Whenever I hear the '5-tool player' thing, it's always a hitting problem. Looking at his MiLB stats, his only success was in A - A+ ball. Then, as you said, there has to be a ton of rust after all the injuries last year. Unless he turns in a stunning performance at AA, I hope the Twins do not call him up at all.
  9. I've mentioned this before, but worth repeating: Peterson, like Colabello, are good for baseball. They are the guys that keep fans going to the minor league games.
  10. “He’s a guy, for me, that likes those moments,” revealed Molitor after the game. “He’s not intimidated. He watched the guy. He knew he was throwing a lot of off-speed pitches. He kept it in the middle of the field and delivered.” To me, that speaks volumes about Eddie Rosario. He'd be my starting CF.
  11. Pretty good contract for the Twins. My only concern is that information got out about Dozier and his agent wanting to hit free agency at 31. Ryan & Co. have gotten backed into a corner too many times on needing to trade a player and everyone in both Leagues know it. Scouting reports on Dozier's defense vary on <= average, walks, RBI's and HR's were very good last year, BA and K's were still bad. If he can increase the BA to something in the .270 range and get the K's below 80-90 in the next couple years, Dozier is incredibly trade-able at age 29. And the next round of middle infielders should, hopefully, be ready.
  12. I'm curious: How much time would it take to convert Pelfry to relief? Warmups would be significantly different and so would pitch selection.
  13. Still only 23 [for a couple months] and only 1 year with Brunansky, I'm expecting his hitting to be significantly better this year. I haven't seen him enough times to make a judgement on his defense. Only video clips. Start typing up the contract extension now, Jeremy!
  14. I got curious about who started the "5 tool talent" thing. From Sporting News: "Branch Rickey first coined the term "Five Tool" Player (The five tools are hitting for average, hitting for power, baserunning skills/speed, throwing, and fielding) in his book "The American Diamond." At the time, Rickey could name only two true "Five Tool" players — Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle, both center fielders at the time."
  15. Thank Scott Boras for that :-) More teams started resigning their own free agents to big contracts because it seemed like they had no other choice if they wanted to stay competitive. So, with fewer options, the Yankees ended up going after aging free agents like Beltran and are finally suffering for the ridiculously long guaranteed they been giving away like candy on Halloween. A terrible thing to watch :-)
  16. With so many pitchers in the running for the final spot, Meyer didn't have much of a chance. It sounds like he wasn't in a good frame of mind for that last appearance. 5 2/3 innings just isn't enough. Some one should reach out to Randy Johnson and see if he's available for a pep talk.
  17. From the Strib: “You can tell he starts getting sped up, and mechanically … he flies open a little bit and loses that release point,” the Twins manager said. This, and the "arm slot" discussion here: does it ring a bell? Meyer is the righthanded version of Randy Johnson.
  18. Another pitcher that may be called up this year? COOL! The question that keeps popping up in my head is why did they sign E. Santana and resign Pelfry?
  19. I'll toss this in: It's Spring Training and pitchers are typically getting back in the pitching groove, physically. I'd only be concerned if they we not pitching anywhere near the plate than speed.
  20. I'll say it: The best thing the Twins can do to improve themselves is a new GM. I give credit where credit is due: we wouldn't be talking about all these [hopefully] great young players coming through the Twins farm system if it wasn't for Terry Ryan. That being said, he doesn't seem to have the touch when selecting useful veteran talent to support a rebuilding team. Ryan also is too close to the players. A GM needs to be heartless. Traded players while they were still in their prime and don't wait for the jump in salary and everyone in the league knows it. I've read many teams consider him a good choice for team president. Back on topic: who would I trade? If I'm a real GM, anyone and everyone is available for a price. Terry Ryan wouldn't do it.
  21. You can never have enough pitching.
  22. That's good news on Gibson. Strikeouts are sexy, but who cares if the hitters keep pounding the ball into the ground. Plus, a sinkerball pitcher keeps infielders more alert. IMHO, if we're talking about a lineup in the traditional sense, then I would not put either in a spot above #4. From the reports I've been reading, Dozier is sounding more like a dead pull hitter. Again "lineup in the traditional sense" you want that #2 guy hitting the other way at times and has a lot less that an average of 120k's over the past 2 years. Mauer is still "fast for a catcher". With the potential of a lot of young hitters in the lineup, I think it would make more sense to have both offering some protection behind them.
  23. I like the boy's view on Rosario and Hicks. I can live with Schaefer for a couple months as a CF starter. Let them swing away in AAA. If one proves himself there, at person is your starter for the future. The other, trade bait. Also like their views on the player evaluations in the minors.
  24. "made it clear that he had offers coming in from multiple teams that made it to the postseason or were contending to the end." Funny, in the latest Gleeman & the Geek they were talking about how many players say exactly the same thing.
  25. That's what I would think. I have no idea what Terry Ryan was thinking by signing all these middle of the road pitchers to longish term contracts when he has a few promising 25 year olds waiting in the wings.
