  1. The greatest trick Terry Ryan ever pulled was making people believe a Mentor was $10.5 million. Maybe, just MAYBE the Twins exceeded expectations because they stayed healthy, had extreme cluster luck, Sano carried the offense at times in 2nd half, etc. I don't think there's many people who believe Sano is physically incapable of playing outfield. They believe that moving your top hitting prospect to the OF to keep an avg at best veteran around, eventually blocking Kepler, etc. isn't the wisest course of action.
  2. Gibson, Santana, Hughes are the only real locks in the rotation IMO, May should be one, but they seem to prefer getting 80 innings from him instead of 200. Hopefully I'm wrong on Duffey, but he's far from a sure thing. They should have cut bait with Nolasco by now. Milone could've been moved. Plenty of ways to get a potential steal of a Free Agent into this rotation, and still have room for Berrios.
  3. Yeahhh, I think you're missing the point. Those names aren't all at related to the Twins sticking with "familiar" players. The Twins got rid of Johan because they felt he was past his usefulness? How about Bartlett, Kubel, Guerrier, Hunter being brought back within last couple seasons because they were "their guys"?
  4. Doug Fister just got 1 year, $7 million from the Astros. If last year was a fluke, I think its fair to he would've been the unquestioned Ace of this staff. That being said, looking forward to seeing more Nolasco, Milone, etc.
  5. On paper they are the worst team in the division. It's not nearly as simple as just saying "they were 2nd last year, with a couple better performances they could be 1st this year". They were one of the healthiest teams in baseball last year, and were far and away #2 in Cluster luck. If things like that come back to the norm, its much more likely this is a 70-75 win team than 85+
  6. They could have both Sano + Kepler, which by ~ June would be much >>> than Sano (OF) + Plouffe
  7. Ha - if you think trading for a backup Catcher (that is what he will be this year, it is not the "Twins way" to sit a veteran in Suzuki down) and taking a flyer on a guy who may very well end up being the teams 3rd or 4th best option at DH ( I don't think that will be the case, but its very possible).. is 2 fairly big deals... i dont know what to tell you
  8. Offseason ways to improve club 1) FA signings 2) Trades The Twins chose none of the above. There were plenty of ways to improve this roster, beyond just straight up FA signings... but it would have taken money, something the Pohlads seem unwilling to spend, and creativity with the roster, something Terry Ryan seems incapable of. They could have; Cut bait with Nolasco, take on half his salary or more and give him away. He doesn't want to be here, the roster spot could be better used elsewhere. My proposal - Offer Doug Fister 1 year, $12/ million w/ incentives. Berrios will still be next man up They could have; Traded Plouffe - it's been beaten to death, but he makes very little sense with this current roster. Sano to 3B, Arcia in a platoon to start the year with cheap FA who can hit lefties. This also would have opened up the possibility of Alex Gordon, Cespedes, etc. The market seemed to undervalue these guys, would have been worth looking into. When Kepler is ready in May/June, you can flip Rosario (who I'm personally not sold on yet) Instead, they signed A DH, the one position they already had plenty of options at.
  9. "Is it enough to offset the combined 7.5-ish WAR they lost in Cespedes and Price?" If you want to look at it that simply, sure. Justin Upton and Jordan Zimmerman had a combined 7.9 WAR last year.
  10. Kohl Stewart is about 7-10 spots too low. Also - is the Jorge Polanco #1 in the post previous to this a joke? Maybe ahead of Burdi and Chargois in that top 10, but that's it.
  11. The bullpen should be much better. Yes, they don't get 20 starts from Price like they got last year, they also won't get 31 starts from Alfredo Simon, 27 from the combo of Shane Greene + Kyle Lobstein. A top 3 of Verlander, Zimmerman, Norris could be very very good, with Michael Fulmer likely giving them innings at some point. Vegas has them at 12/1 to Win the AL Pennant, tied with KC + Cleveland for best odds from the Central. I think that's more than fair.
  12. In one sentence you talk about sample size, in the following paragraph you say Arcia deserved to stay at AAA cuz he didn't hit in the 5-7 game rehab sample.
  13. Umm no expansion team would choose to take on those contracts. Milone is cheap, so I guess maybe he would be picked in this hypothetical
  14. What track record are you speaking to exactly? He was never a particularly good minor leaguer, yeah he was always a little young for his level but he was never really considered much of a prospect. I guess he was decent in Fort Meyers in 2012? Why do you think his bat will translate to OF, it was sketchy even at SS. Who do you prefer him over, Rosario, Buxton, Kepler or Sano? So many questions...
  15. I'm curious what in Danny Santana's major league or minor league track record makes you think he would be a good option down the road as a top of the order Left Fielder. In 192 Major League games he has walked 25 times and struck out 166
  16. You think that San Diego would make a 1 for 1 swap? It'd still be $21 million for a 36 year old Shields (w/ a $2 million buyout) in 2018
  17. A 25 year old DH w/ ML experience had a good OPS in AA last year? Shocking. The rumor is Vargas may be going to Japan, so I'm not sure how that jives with "any team would claim him"
  18. I never said Nolasco was going to be better than Shields in 2016. I will say, I'd rather them just eat the remaining 2 years on the Nolasco contract than bring in Shields for $65 million over 3 years (Or $21 million for one year, since he has an opt out if he pitches well in 2016)
  19. If Vargas was outrighted off the 40 man today I'm not even sure he would be claimed by someone. I'm sure San Diego is waiting with bated breath for that phone call where TR offers them Vargas, Arcia, Milone and Nolasco. Haha, what single player in that deal would San Diego want?
  20. You think it will effect the Twins ability to win games, who is your CFer then? Santana? He definitely looked ready to hit Major League pitching last year, right? And he's not half the CFer Buxton is
  21. Aaron Hicks and Byron Buxton are not comparable prospects so I'm unclear why you think thats valid. Why don't you look at how the Angels handled Trout, while Buxton won't ever reach his level, that's the type of prospect Buxton is.
  22. The only argument against is that we don't need another starter? How about the fact that Shields is going to make nearly as much in 2016 as they owe Nolasco for 2016+2017, and had a FIP of 4.45 last year, and gave up 33 home runs in a pitchers ball park?
  23. I wouldn't consider Santana as the starting CFer for a second, so no. I would roll with Sano, Buxton and hope Kepler is ready by May1. Buxton will likely be worth multiple wins with his glove and base running, even if the bat takes a month or two.
  24. Probably because Plouffe is a much better 3B than Sano, and Sano would likely be just as good of OF as Plouffe. If they really are all in on keeping Plouffe, I would be checking the market and see what you can get for Rosario... Sano to LF, Buxton CF, Kepler RF
  25. He is a below average outfielder, with an OPS+ of 94 this season. OBP last 3 season; .290, .309, . 306. You know what the say, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck... it just might be a duck
