  1. The Twins are paying Nolasco $4 million next season, they did not cut the Angels a check for $4 million. That seems to be the disconnect were having
  2. I'm not getting the alien reference? The Pohlads likely aren't involved in baseball decisions, Antony couldn't have come to them and said instead of a straight salary swap (Santiago/Nilasco), we're gonna save ~$3.5 million next year?
  3. Again, I don't think Santiago is clearly better. If he was, I'm guessing he could've brought back more than a clearly inferior pitcher and extreme long shot Yes, Nolasco will make $12 million next year, but the Angels (or team they will hypothetically trade him to) only will be paying $8 million of that. He's not on the hook for $13, he's on the hook for $1million buyout.
  4. I think we're talking different things here. I mean 2017 trade deadline, if both are out there. They will be owed about the same amount of money. I have no issues with you dismissing him. Just saying, the best the Angels could do for Santiago was Nolasco and Meyer. I think around the league he is probably seen in a similar light to a Tommy Milone, very little value.
  5. Well in terms of next deadline, or whenever, they are making the same amount of money, since the Angels will owe Nolasco about what the Twins will owe Santiago. I'm struggling with the people who on one hand completely dismiss Meyer, and are overjoyed to be rid of Nolasco, but for some reason think Santiago is going to magically have value soon (he just got traded for Nolasco and Meyer...)
  6. Well I would take Meyer over Light. Was just pointing out the location issues. I replied to your other post with more thoughts. Im not excited in the least about Santiago, so I would've preferred to keep Meyer and buyout more of Nolasco
  7. I'm not willing to concede we have a much better starter out of it. Marginally better at best. So I also won't concede flexibility, as it relates to flipping Santiago, because I don't think he'll have value next summer either. I also would be shocked if he was non tendered, but with the new regime I guess that's possible.
  8. Meyer will be 26 until January, let's not age him too much. Pat Light can't control his pitches, even more so than Meyer, is 1 year younger and doesn't have Meyers stuff. The general consensus here was he was a good pickup (I was fine with that deal). Considering where baseball salaries currently sit, I certainly think Meyer is worth a $5million flier. 6 years control for a potential backend bullpen guy (I have no faith he is a starter long term).
  9. Quite a few said he totally changed their minds and they would consider him for the full time job... based on trading Nunez, Nolasco, Meyer and Abad.....
  10. "Inability to locate the strike zone" might be a little more interesting of theory had they not just traded for a pitcher with a 4.3 BB/9 rate...
  11. I think we both know that's unlikely... but interesting question. I'm not sure that I would, but it's not my money.
  12. Santiago's last outing included 119 pitches with 6 walks in 5 innings. Hopefully he at least works a little quicker than Pelfrey
  13. Again, I didn't say this, so if you want to continue the debate it would be best to stop putting words in my mouth. I said buyout Nolasco, as in release.. DFA. I never said they could get a prospect for him, so where did you get the quotes from
  14. It's odd to even bring the name Andrew Miller up if you didn't want to create some sort of parallel. Excuse me for being confused. Again, you seem awful certain about this generate a better return that Tommy Milone, when the only evidence we have for is his value is for Ricky Nolasco and Alex Meyer "less of a chance than finding an ocean in Arizona". I'm disagreeing based on what we actually know about his value, not what I want to believe his value is. Also, Target field is more of a home run park than Anaheim. So we'll see how his home run rate does here.
  15. I'm not a Pohlad pocket protector, so I would've preferred buying out Nolasco to including a prospect to rid themselves of the contract. I would've liked to see Meyer in the Twins bullpen in 2017. Where did I say he could get a stud catcher or shortstop?
  16. Right, he could net something like a bad contract and a pitcher that has as much chance of figuring it out as me finding an ocean in Arizona, according to the post I was replying to. Every player in baseball could be traded, we just saw that with Nolasco pairing with a prospect to go out the door. The point I am trying to make is lets not act like on one hand, Meyer is a nothing prospect, and Nolasco is the worst pitcher in baseball... but on the same hand, the guy we got for them is going to be the missing piece or flipped for someone worthwhile. The Angels are taking a flier on Meyer, they gave up Santiago because they know he's nothing special and didn't have better options to deal him
  17. You are missing the point. You can still say the same about Ricky Nolasco. He didn't generate a return, Alex Meyer did.
  18. By writing this "I'm not saying they would get an Andrew Miller return. But.." led me to believe you think he has real trade value. I would put him in the category of Tommy Milone trade value
  19. The Angels have seen Hector Santiago for 2 years, and thought it was worth giving him up for Nolasco and Meyer (who according to you has no chance of figuring it out)... but he has some immense trade value? Color me skeptical
  20. We've seen what Tommy Milone's value has been around the league the last couple of years, and we've now seen what Santiago's value is. Flipping him for anything of value seems like a long shot at best
  21. I didn't buy into the Meyer as a starter steam that started up again with a few good starts this April. But yeah, I imagined him as one of the better bullpen options next Spring. Who knows about the Shoulder, if the Angels were comfortable with it I imagine the injury isn't too bad.
  22. I don't have a huge issue with giving up Meyer either, but this team doesn't lack #5 starters so I'm not sure why Santiago was a need
  23. Because he gave up Meyer to get something back. I think it's likely Santiago performs better than Nolasco (not a high bar to clear), but lets not act like Nolasco brought back Santiago.. Meyer did
  24. Right, they could've DFA'd Nolasco. Essentially instead of choosing that option, they traded Meyer for Santiago. I'm far from sold on Meyer ever figuring it out, but its certainly possible, and this deal could be a big loss if he does.
  25. I think "fine with it" is a good way to put it. I'm shocked at the people bending over backwards to congratulate Antony. They are still paying the same amount of money next year and Santiago is no sure thing to be anything more than a #5 starter
