  1. I didn't say it was for baseball reasons, but the PBO can't be blind to how the team is doing financially. He needed to understand that the bottom line was not improving and was probably suffering from an ownership standpoint. We can debate all day about if that is true or not but will never know because the books won't be shared. Based on that he needs to be prepared to make the necessary adjustments, you don't wait until dad tells you can't spend money. A business doesn't give 50% raises to employees if there is not sufficient revenue support it. And likewise if revenues drop or expenses rise without a corresponding revenue increase, you have to be prepared to adjust your budget. If Falvey doesn't understand this part of the business then he had no business being in a leadership position. He has always tried to have that one big contract, first it was Donaldson, then Correa. Another option was to build the team around known resources based on history.
  2. It is not a frivolous reason to criticize him. Everyone in his position in baseball or any other needs to anticipate based on what is happening inside their organization and within the industry. It was a risk he advocated for and they had minimal success and the team was accumulating debt. He chose to make a big swing and ask for record payrolls from ownership, you better produce more than he did. He could have taken a more conservative approach like other teams that we should be patterning ourselves after but he didn't. I will grant that ownership meaning Joe P. could have taken a less drastic approach to cutting payroll but they didn't and Falvey needed to understand the environment he was operating in when he chose to swim in the deep end.
  3. They won 87 games and won a wild card series where the games were at home. Just because it was the first playoff win in 20 years doesn't make it a great year. And the debt accumulated was for the team, the President of Operations should know the financial situation and make decisions accordingly. Did he really think payroll would go to $160, 180 or even 200m. When they have never waded in those waters before. Was there going to be enough dollars to fill in the roster around Correa. Falvey was a failure as the President of Baseball Operations not GM as you stated.
  4. Or Falvey took a swing and missed. All this was post Covid, he had to know the team was accumulating debt and to think in that situation payroll was going to grow was naive. He didn't win enough to justify further debt. He could have passed on Correa the second time and built the roster with the known resources that he would have. He wanted to played with the big boys but didn't have the pocketbook behind him to back it up.
  5. Sabato could replace Bell if they are going to insist on a DH spot on the roster. Clemens moves around and starts 3 or 4 times which should be his role. There are AB's for Fedko, have Larnach DH a couple of days a week and Sabato the other days. Then Fedko plays in LF 2 days and can play RF two days for Martin. Plenty of AB's to go around if the manager wants it to happen.
  6. Have you been watching any games, he has been letting the outside pitches go more, yes still needs to continue to improve. But to say he is swinging at everything is just not accurate.
  7. First of all I don't want Tom P. making any decisions on the baseball side of things, that was Falvey's and now Zoll's job. His role is to approve or deny the plan and provide the resources. We don't know that Falvey was in full rebuild mode, if so why were Jeffers, Ryan and Lopez all still here. Falvey didn't leave until right before spring training. He signed Josh Bell on December 19th two days after the announcement about the changes in the front office. That signing shows a sign of trying to compete. And up until that point Falvey was making sure everyone he knew that he didn't know his budget for next year. So if you are rebuilding and don't know your budget why squander limited funds on a signing like Bell if you are in a rebuild. Falvey never bought into the rebuild because he knew he had cover being in a weak division, he could try and straddle the line and sign bargain basement free agents because it was all he needed to be competitive in the division. Where ownership screwed up was not getting their house in order early last fall so that there was clear direction being give to management for the offseason. Zoll needs to present a plan of how to make the Twins competitive and get buy in from ownership. The problem is I don't think Zoll is capable and that again is on Tommy P., he needs a competent baseball executive to provide the direction for this team.
  8. Of that $73m they spent $7m on Bell who is a DH only who is below average at the plate. And another $7m on a backup catcher who is making us wish Vazquez was back. The FO has never done a good job with limited resources but somehow other organizations, Cleveland and Milwaukee can build winning teams without large payrolls. Money isn't always the answer.
  9. Why wait another month, this roster is not working and is not winning games. There is absolutely no reason to wait. We have at least 4 utility players and one DH only player on this roster. The roster needs to be balanced out.
  10. Tom P shouldn't be the one we are hearing from. It should be Zoll, he should be setting the direction for this team and getting sign off from ownership. This is where Tommy messed up in my opinion. I don't want a hands on owner, hire competent people and let them do their job. What I want to hear from him is who Zoll's replacement is. Zoll's plan is no different than Falvey's, tread water with the retreads and pray you back into the playoffs so you can say you are successful. How often do we hear from the Wilf's during the season, seldom, they give overall business updates at strategic times and let the management run the team. The current generation of the Pohlads need to learn from them.
  11. Move on from all 3, raise the floor of the roster. Lee can be the backup SS, Clemens can play third or Lewis when Lee fills in at short.
  12. Falvey was the one who signed Bell to play 1B, not DH. Player development has been non existent for the last 10 years under Falvey. You can argue about what payroll should be, but other GM's have been able to field winning teams with the same payroll as the Twins or even lower. If I am going to blame the Pohlad's, it's for not hiring the right people. They should not be the ones making the day to day decisions. They should have a plan presented to them and they either agree, ask for adjustments or say no to the plan. But you need to have a competent management present the plan. This is how every business whether sports or other industries operate.
  13. The highlight from the Giants game showed a 21 year old getting the walk off home run. I didn't think you were allowed to have players under 25 on your roster.
  14. Or they hire competent people to run the organization like grandpa did.
  15. At some point we have to develop some starters, we can't convert them all to the bullpen. This team's record of developing players is abysmal.
  16. Don't worry we will score 4 or 5 runs yet and then Morneau they are really battling. And they can continue to say there is no problem with the offense. Keep running this putrid lineup out there.
  17. We seriously have Clemens and Bell hitting 3 and 4. Can you say we are not a serious organization without saying it.
  18. You mean his whole career, he just had one of his good stretches before the IL stint.
  19. Morneau really needs to stick to working with Royce. He is becoming more and more like Bremer every day. I was hoping for more from him but it just isn't there.
  20. I don't get it either, I have no idea what they are thinking. But I would like to see an experienced baseball executive running the baseball side of things. Maybe they could show Tommy P. a plan of how to run an organization. Zoll is way over his head.
  21. There are three players in the lineup today that are not part of the future as regulars and are taking AB's away from younger players. Convince us that this lineup can even make the playoffs much less win a playoff game.
  22. He wants no one under 30 to play, only washed up vets are a fit for this team.
  23. The problem is the front office hasn't changed other than the top position. Everyone else including his replacement is still there who believes in how they are operating. Zoll needs to go now, not at the end of the season.
