  1. One more factor throwing a wrench into it all...the Twins are in contention for postseason play. Sure, it's early. Yes, it could all fall apart....but what if it doesn't? You don't want to start trading pieces away if we have a shot at the playoffs. It would be much simpler if the Twins were doing what we thought they would do after week 1.
  2. There's no putting lipstick on this pig to pretty it up. Opposing batters are hitting a staggering .429 against Brian Duensing. Duensing has never had either the velocity or the stuff to finish off hitters. His game relies on deception and location to invoke hitters into taking less than stellar cuts. Obviously, at .429 BA, the hitters are taking pretty stellar cuts. Some would point out that he's a lefty, but do we really need a lefty that tees it up to the tune of a 2.74 WHIP? That's brutal even in Little League. So, what do the Twins do? Ride it out and hope it gets better? 15 day DL for the mystery injury? DFA? Trade? I'm guessing that the Twins will ride it out for another couple of weeks before they make a move, but feel free to play GM for a day and work your magic.
  3. My initial guess was that the move to send Vargas down has more to do with the upcoming NL schedule. No DH, so why let your young DH just sit on the bench? Send him down to AAA and have him play every day and tune the swing rather than pinch hitting maybe once a game. Bernier is someone they can send back down without worry of getting picked up by someone else. ...and then I actually looked at the schedule. Dunno, but in a couple of weeks this move would make more sense. Oh well, go Twins!
  4. Hicks is up and will be given ample opportunity before the trade deadline to show whether he belongs or not. If not, I think he'll be traded. I don't see him passing thru waivers and the Twins would be foolish to risk it.
  5. Finally found one. Mariners on April 26.
  6. Have we won a game yet when the other team didn't commit an error? If nothing else, this is a capitalistic bunch and that's an improvement on it's own.
  7. The question over this homestand is - did the Twins win, or did the other teams lose? Oakland and Chicago looked awful on defense committing 11 errors across their 8 games. The Twins took advantage of the mistakes, so they deserve some credit, but I'm reserving judgement until we beat teams that play well. Keep in mind that the home stand started with Detroit taking 2 of 3 from us. We have hope, but it may be false hope. Let's see how the next 6 on the road go.
  8. Love seeing the Twins win, but tempering my excitement because the reality is that Oakand and the White Sox sort of beat themselves with their sloppy play. They gave us a lot of extra outs. The good news is that the Twins aren't beating themselves. So, on to Cleveland and Detroit and lets hope we stay hot and they fall down like Oakland and the Sox.
  9. Time to take control of this game. Geaux Twins!
  10. I think any statistical measurement for pitchers can be skewed. ERA depends on the quality of the defense behind you. An outfield full of Willinghams and Arcias isn't going to lend to a low ERA. Wins and losses depends on the offense and defense around you. xFIP, FIP, SIERRA...they all have holes. Bottom line is that the Twins are finding a way to win even though it is somewhat defying the odds. I had said last week that if the stat lines continued as they were, winning games would not continue. However, the stat lines have trended in the right direction and the winning has continued. Go Twins!
  11. Pleasantly surprised to be above .500. After the first week, I didn't expect this, but the White Sox are just what we needed. It brings a smile to my face to know that our expectations to this point were low and have been exceeded while their expectations were sky high and have been dashed. As long as the Sox are under us in the standings, I'm pretty happy.
  12. Well, so much for Phil's win.
  13. Yeah, by "sent down", it might mean to an easy chair in the basement of his home.
  14. Stauffer is solidifying his spot as the guy who gets sent down for Nolasco.
  15. Yup, understand. I guess what I am really saying is that if those numbers continue, 90 losses is probable.
  16. While wins and losses are the only numbers that matter, they rarely tell the true story...and I love that about baseball. Reality check - Twins have scored only 60 runs this year, 21 fewer than the AL average. Their OPS is .608 which ranks them at the bottom of the AL by .022 points and a full .101 point below the AL average. That's not good Meanwhile, on the pitching front, the ERA is 4.33, however, I think ERA is an overrated stat (a slow defense often inflates ERA while a great defense deflates ERA). We are last in strike outs by a long ways (no shocker there) while our batting average against our pitchers is tied for 2nd to last in the AL at .260. That's not good. What about our defense? Well, our fielding percentage of .980 puts us at 10th in the AL. That's not counting the balls in the outfield that drop because our guys can't get there to get a glove on it. OK, so what does all that mean? It means that if you get timely hitting and your opponents don't over a short period of time, you can win games. However, over the long haul, if these stats continue, the odds of winning the majority of our games are....not good! Not being negative. Being realistic based on the numbers.
  17. Remember when we let Alex Presley go in favor (and I think that word fits) of Jason Bartlett? Houston scooped him up and he was gone. Alex Presley, in my mind is the equivalent of the two CF that we have now. Would we be better? Maybe. He's a career .259 hitter and I can't imagine him playing worse CF. Would we have a respectable place holder for Buxton/Hicks/Rosario? Yup. Water under the bridge, but a bad decision can haunt for years.
  18. Would our center fielder have caught that?
  19. He may know he's one and done, but he may think it's worth the risk....reputation is already shot, so he can only improve it...one and done is better than not playing again. I dunno, but I do know that I don't trust him.
  20. "Shrinkage!" "I'm out" (the contest) "They're real and they're spectacular"
  21. Not often that you get Seinfeld and Helen Reddy quoted in one thread.
  22. That's borderline mancrush there....not that there's anything wrong with that.
  23. Explosion of runs coming right here. I can feel it...oh wait, that's the bean burrito again.
  24. 3 seeing eye grounders = our first run. could have been a dp in there. time for a big fly.
