  1. Interesting take. One could also see value in trading Garver and/or Turner before they turn into pumpkins (I think this will happen to Turner. Garver is good, but they are, for whatever terrible reason, not promoting him to Fort Myers right now).
  2. It would be a major mistake to waste this opportunity to pick up a prospect potentially up into the 150-250 range, but certainly in the 250-400 range, especially with regard to the Cardinals or Orioles. Patrick Wisdom and Carson Kelly come to mind from the Cardinals. Tim Berry and Parker Bridwell come to mind for the Orioles. I do think that it would be a mistake to then re-sign Suzuki in the offseason. But even in such a scenario, it would be a complete waste to let him finish this season as a Twin. Give the rest of the season to Pinto and Herrmann and get over it. See what happens there for two+ months and then decide about Suzuki and others in the offseason. This is an OBVIOUS decision to make to add depth to the minor league system.
  3. Not sure why anyone would want Jon Jay.
  4. Absolutely on Lively. Willingham for Lively seems possible. Amir Garrett might be worth looking into. Patrick Wisdom might be a good player down the road, as far as the Cards go. Or the Twins could ask about catcher Carson Kelly.
  5. I had an original 6 guys that I would pick to trade from (Willingham, Suzuki, Morales, Correia, Fien, and Duensing) but now I would add Plouffe and Escobar as well. Plouffe is not going to get better than he is right now (aside from continual marginal defensive improvement). It just isn't there, but he is OK.
  6. Great stuff. I am really excited about these three. Meyer is snailing along a bit at this point, but Berrios and Vargas have taken major steps forward.
  7. Truly, truly excited for Correia to be making his trade-bait case.
  8. .670 OPS at Fort Myers for the year, though he just is coming back from injury (and his performance may have suffered before going on the DL).
  9. Let him get back to AAA after the All-Star break and then see what happens for the rest of July.
  10. I know. There will be some good players involved and even if they never make it as Twins they are added assets to create depth in the farm system so if the Twins top prospects arrive EVER and they turn it around to contention they will have more guys to deal without destroying the farm.
  11. Maybe you're right. I do think that health issues are the main factor that would be driving down his value.
  12. I bet everything that after Joe Mauer, the least likely guys the Twins will trade are Glen Perkins and Brian Dozier. Anyway, I don't know if I will have the time to look around at other teams for trades this year, but imagine the following (just to maybe end any "top 25 prospect" talk) using comparable Twins prospects: Suzuki for Kennys Vargas (10-12ish) Fien for Adam Walker (12-15ish) Willingham for Sean Gilmartin (18-20ish) Morales for Fernando Romero (18-20ish) Correia for Aderlin Mejia (25-30ish) Duensing for Jason Kanzler (around 50) Matt Guerrier for Matt Tomshaw (50s) Note that this was based on prospect level and not on age considerations or anything like that (Darnell instead of Mejia or something).
  13. How far do we want to really push even a .500 Twins team back? 2017?
  14. I wasn't even thinking about Burton or Swarzak as getting anything in return. Swarzak was only serviceable as a long relief/mop up guy and Burton is done. Guerrier should be added to the list, at the bottom with Duensing. I team might think that Duensing could be worth some kind of lower-level prospect. I don't think he is going to be a sweetener (!) at all. In order of usefulness elsewhere I would rank them Suzuki-Fien-Willingham-Morales-Correia-Duensing-Guerrier.
  15. If one loves Suzuki so much, why not get something for him now and then sign him in the offseason. There is no other smart move to make with regard to Suzuki. Sure, there is no guarantee then, but that should hardly matter if getting a top 10ish prospect from the Cardinals could be at stake. Willingham, Morales, Suzuki, Correia, Fien, and Duensing would be the six I would be looking to trade.
  16. Here, here. Fantastic post.
  17. Absolutely not. His career right now might be over anyway with this injury. Even without it though, there is just too much risk of decline. And the Twins will roll with Buxton, Rosario, Hicks, and Arcia very soon.
  18. Add Vargas as a callup
  19. What should be: C - Pinto 1B - Mauer 2B - Dozier 3B - Plouffe SS - Santana LF - Parmelee CF - Hicks RF - Arcia DH - Colabello B - Escobar B - Fuld B - Herrmann B - Nunez SP - Hughes, Gibson, May, Nolasco, Meyer Bullpen - Deduno, Oliveros, Swarzak, Achter, Thielbar, Tonkin, Perkins Traded: Willingham, Suzuki, Morales, Correia, Duensing, Fien (think two good prospects in the top 250 overall, and a few more in the top 500 overall). Gone: Burton, Fryer, Guerrier I feel like I am forgetting somebody else who will be gone, but whatever. Also: September calls should go to Rohlfing, Romero, Guerra, Darnell, Beresford, and Ortiz.
  20. Name: Lance Ray Position: OF/1B Hand: Left Height: 6'1" Weight: 195 DOB: September 2, 1989 POB: Las Vegas, Nevada Shane's prospect rank: NA (borderline prospect in 2013) 2014 start: Fort Myers DL, quickly promoted to AA New Britain Ray has battled injuries since last season. He was a solid performer and a 30ish prospect in 2012. That year he was OK in Fort Myers, though his K/BB ratio was good. After starting the year on the DL in Fort Myers, Ray has jumpstarted his career. In 67 plate appearances in Fort Myers he posted an .868 OPS with 8 doubles and 2 homers. He is now in New Britain. He hasn't played first base since 2012, but he does look to be a LF/RF/1B player from here on out. That he has made it to New Britain after the disaster that was 2013 is a good sign for him.
  21. He didn't, so Gardy doesn't know what he is talking about there either. He spent a lot of time catching, which is just as good. Herrmann has to ultimately replace Fryer.
  22. In other words, I do think there are psychological ramifications involved here regarding performance. Sometimes actual valued prospects just need to be pushed to keep them them confident about there value (I see this as important in org. prospects ranked 15-35 in particular). The Twins org fills in the organization with aging players from the top down. That is a problem. A quick look at the rosters shows enormous holes begging for promotion from below (to, at least, see what prospects in the 15-35 or beyond can actually do).
  23. It is odd. He isn't great at CR right now, but he should be in FTM again after being promoted there last year. Fort Myers is a key testing ground anyway for hitters, so they should promote him. Good god, there is some serious outfield movements needed from CR up in this organization. The Twins promoted Lance Ray to see how he reacts to NB, so I don't see why Williams (who is way better NOW) shouldn't get the not to Fort Myers. This kind of speed and these bursts of offensive performance shouldn't be denied.
  24. I pitched some back in the day. This does not count as any sort of analysis or comparison, but I probably threw no more than 30 hard pitches total between warmup and the first inning actual warmup on the field. I would get loose by another 30 or so before then, but that is it. One has to wonder about first inning blowups with regard to this too. Maybe there is a perfect storm of ideal offensive lineup (first inning is the only time this happens for sure) and pitchers at certain level of wear vs. the situation. What I mean about the latter is that perhaps game pitching after throwing 50 plus pitches at full velocity is a problem, and perhaps getting to the bottom of the lineup at that point would be better. Or, in other words, pitchers have basically thrown a bit in warmups to get a bit tired before the adrenaline and focus that the game brings by playing in it. This might contribute to some of these first inning debacles. What I want to know is what Verlander did back when he was great. He seemed to treat the early innings as a getting loose period before cutting fully loose by the second time through the order.
  25. Herrmann is back with the Twins after the DLing of Nolasco. He is not really much worse defensively, overall, than Fryer, and his bat might be alive now. Clearly Deduno cannot be the real solution to Nolasco, so we will see what the team does here. I think it is appropriate to swap out Fryer for Darnell very, very soon.
