  1. If the Rosario thing is true, then it must simply be that they are looking for a true 15 days only from whoever they call up right now. Hicks would be the real CF replacement when that time comes (well, that time should be right now, but whatever).
  2. I probably don't want Super 2 status, but that won't happen if they chill out until August (dear god trade Hunter). Maybe Hicks, Pinto, and Meyer are already up, and then August brings Sano, Buxton, and Rosario (the first two get a month of AAA time). Of course that isn't going to happen if the Twins are like 60 and 60 and in the hunt.
  3. Well, Jesus H., someone needs to replace Jordan Schafer, minimally. Pinto can do it as having Herrmann allows for both Pinto's use as a DH/pinch hitter and another OF. Nunez and Robinson will be turning into pumpkins soon enough as well.
  4. I have said enough about Escobar to make him hit for the cycle in his next game. I forgot to mention Shane Robinson, Eduardo Nunez, and Eric Fryer. I have basically called for their removal from the organization! And yet look at those strange numbers. I will stick with the three most important players-with-issues at the moment: Oswaldo Arcia (already mentioned the p-word for him lately, so I am off to a good start) may not hit even 15 homers this year and the long-term value is most maximized in a trade, pronto. Miguel Sano's hit tool looks scary right now. Might his career max out with a Rob Deer ceiling? Alex Meyer looks like he might be a mess for another season, making his long-term value also most maximized in a trade (to the Dodgers).
  5. I wouldn't just give up on Arcia vs. lefties, either, but the manager is pretty clear about it if he willing to sit Arcia 90% of the time against lefties in favor of someone who can't hit anyone. They key for me is that Hicks is slugging. He seems to be making some strong contact. That and fixing whatever the hell is wrong defensively with him are the two improvements that will make him worthy of sticking around. As I have said elsewhere, Schafer isn't even stealing bases right now when he does manage to get on base. Thus, there is no value there. He is a decent to good defender in left, not in center. Robinson is the guy to keep around for defensive 4th OF purposes.
  6. It's the beginning of May, so I thought it would be a good time to evaluate my 2015 breakthrough prospect candidates based on their first weeks this year. Here I highlight the position players and will focus on the pitchers tomorrow. Lewin Diaz and Jack Barrie have not started playing yet this season. Jorge (JJ) Fernandez (CDR) was injured a few week ago and is just returning. Statistics so far: 44 PA, .220/.273/.341, three doubles, one triple, three walks, 10 strikeouts Levi Michael (CHA) is really heating up. Statistics so far: 67 PA, .246/.353/.509, three doubles, three triples, two homers, seven walks, 12 strikeouts, three steals, and two times caught stealing Tanner English (CDR) has moved into the leadoff spot. Statistics so far: 82 PA, .239/.337/.352, three doubles, one triple, one homer, 11 walks, 15 strikeouts, eight steals, and one time caught stealing Zach Granite (CDR/FTM) has already been promoted to a new level. He has had some initial problems with A+ pitching, but the overall numbers are still good. Statistics so far: 98 PA, .318/.414/.400, five doubles, one triple, 13 walks, eight strikeouts, eight steals, and two times caught stealing Zack Larson (CDR) has struggled at the plate. Statistics so far: 100 PA, .190/.314/.250, three doubles, one triple, 13 walks, 22 strikeouts, five steals, and one time caught stealing. Tyler Kuresa (CDR) is not hitting well, at present. Statistics so far: 70 PA, .224/.243/.313. three doubles, one homer, two walks, and 17 strikeouts
  7. I have said things recently about Trevor Plouffe not being all that. I have said that Vargas should go back to AAA. Of course these two guys immediately start hitting better, especially Plouffe. Eduardo Escobar will be up next, then. Expect a big game from him with his next start. The same is true about players in the minors. I have said negative things about Taylor Rogers (though I changed my tune about him mid-season last year), Ryan Eades, and D.J. Baxendale. All three look to be promising future rotation contenders, actually. Anyone requests for me to belittle X player to make him perform better?
  8. I am not asking for Hicks to replace Robinson. I am asking for an immediate replacement of Jordan Schafer. There have been games against lefties that Arcia has sat out, which is understandable. The result, however, has been that two of these four--Schafer, Robinson, Nunez, and Escobar have been in the OF with Hunter. Schafer and Escobar are not good defensively or offensively, and the hot starts for Robinson and Nunez are very unsustainable. The long term answer might be a Rosario-Buxton-Arcia/Hicks OF anyway. Maybe it is time to try out that future RF platoon?
  9. These are three key facts! If Aaron Hicks ends up in a platoon with Oswaldo Arcia for some of this year and then going forward, I say "Hell Yes!" to that. Fill a roster with players who can excel in their roles.
  10. http://wineandjurisprudence.org/the-legacy-of-3-2-beer/ I knew there was something off about 3.2 beer.
  11. I always thought--wishfully--that the Hunter signing was about five months (March-July) of playing and mentoring before he would be dealt to a contender who wanted a RH bat for the stretch run and playoffs. Given that, I wasn't overly dismayed with the signing. Failing that, yikes. I still am going to predict that it will happen (the Yankees are going to get injured, whether it is A-Rod or Young, or Beltran, or Ellsbury, or Teixeira).
  12. Hicks' AAA numbers are now pretty much square with his career minor league numbers. He is hitting from the left side well and is really, really hitting well from the right side. He has gotten some time in RF too. Also, Jordan Schafer is terrible. I thought it would be Robinson who would be this bad. Schafer isn't even stealing bases. And Robinson is not going to continue like this. Maybe he ends up keeping his OPS close to .675 or so by the end of the season, but that will mean regression from where he is now. Given how often Arcia is not in the lineup and Escobar (who is terrible at the plate so far) is in LF, it makes even more sense to have Hicks up than we originally thought around here, and this is even more so given how willing Molitor is to sit Arcia against lefties (for better or worse given the actual current Escobar alternative). An OF alignment of Robinson-Hicks-Hunter is not too shabby against lefties for now. We can worry about Buxton later.
  13. Pinto could replace Vargas, who might need a month away from The Show to work on stuff. Also, Jordan Schafer now doesn't even steal bases anymore, so his value is negative. I would pinch hit for Schafer in innings 7-9 with Pinto in every single game that Pinto didn't start.
  14. By the way, what is the story with the "g" suddenly on the end of Aderlin? And why does BR still think Mat Batts is Matt Batts?
  15. I will say that it is pretty disappointing to see how AAP is doing so far this year. I could understand July and August fatigue, but so many players without threads at all and so many with only the first post?
  16. I only brought the great PFlo into this conversation in order to compare defense. It seemed, at least, that he became more consistent defensively with big league time. Concentrating really hard on every play is actually exhausting--it is a kind of endurance training that players need to go through unless they just get it naturally or developed it through playing as a kid.
  17. That is *social* conservatism vs. *social* liberalism, mind you. And the differences, predictably, have to do with the amygdala (sp?) and fear response (among other things).
  18. White America wouldn't be paying a modicum of attention to this if there weren't such protests.
  19. Actually, there is mounting evidence that liberals and conservatives are "wired" differently!
  20. http://www.alternet.org/civil-liberties/riot-language-unheard-9-mlk-quotes-mainstream-media-wont-cite A more honest view of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s views on the matter. How his message is currently co-opted by conservatives is beyond my comprehension.
  21. Those police officers in Baltimore very likely would have not been indicted without this kind of attention. Leaders didn't do that. As far as the "few bad apples" about black urban youth, no one could seriously maintain that there are only a few bad apples. There is widespread crime and drug use in that population. I am not a libertarian about freedom, however, I think people are mainly conditioned by both internal and external factors. The same would apply to police officers--I am not sure what compels so many to completely abuse their authority. And that's a key difference. Urban youth are not here to protect and serve. There has to be a different standard for police. Also, again, the rioting on Monday was provoked by police officers waiting for those teenage kids to get off of their buses. Teachers in Baltimore attest to this.
  22. Either promote him or trade him. I am sick of this.
  23. Mat Batts DOB: 7-6-91 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina Height: 5'11" Weight: 190 Position: SP Bats: Right Throws: Left Acquired: Drafted by Twins in 17th round of 2014 draft out of UNC-Wilmington 2014 statistics (GCL/ELZ/CDR): 60.2 IP, 1.78 ERA, 9.9 K/9, 1.0 BB/9 (67/7), 0.775 WHIP 2015 statistics (CDR): 24.2 IP, 2.19 ERA, 8.8 K/9, 1.8 BB/9 (24/5), 0.851 WHIP Batts was dominant in his first year of professional ball, playing in three different levels in the Twins system. He is under six feet tall, so there might be some concern about sticking around as a starter, but so far the results have been very good. He might hit 90 sometimes with his fastball, but he has solid secondary pitches. I would like to see him challenged in Fort Myers soon. I hope he doesn't become the left-handed B.J. Hermsen. 2015 prediction: The Twins promote him by mid-June to Fort Myers and he pitches fairly well, perhaps getting some time in the bullpen as well. 150 IP, 3.35 ERA, 8 K/9, 2 BB/9, 1.15 WHIP.
