  1. The .878 OPS in AAA last year is relevant to these discussions.
  2. I was wondering if he was sent back down periodically. It doesn't really matter. A team in contention can have a player like that (esp in the NL). He is a very good player to have in the playoffs. I should distinguish between ST games and the totality of ST. So much goes on outside of games. There is value to the overall ST. But the games are ridiculous! Honestly, there is about as much value in ST games as the AFL games in evaluating up and coming players. Anyway, I don't really think that roster decisions should be based on ST games unless we are talking about prospect vs. prospect or veteran vs. veteran when they have basically similar track records. Guys in competition with similar track records and roughly the same age can be evaluated by these silly games.
  3. Also, Herrmann's value as another catcher is going to be dependent on how far Suzuki regresses. Also, given Schafer/Robinson, it might be wise to use Pinto as a pinch hitter in absolutely every game that he doesn't start. Another reason for Herrmann to be on the roster instead of Nunez. 9th inning OF alignment of Schafer-Robinson-Herrmann is not bad. Of course Schafer-Farris-Robinson is even better.
  4. Something that I think hasn't been said at TD yet--the most pissed off about Shane Robinson should be Eric Farris! Farris posted an .804 OPS against lefties in Rochester last year. He won the Twins OF defense award for 2014 in the minors. A true 4th OF (all three positions) and a second baseman. Emergency shortstop. Actually, how is Eduardo Nunez taken more seriously than Farris? Just this so-called "pop" that Nunez possesses?
  5. A. A very good team can have the luxury of one guy who does one thing very well (defense in this case). Was he on their playoff rosters? He is exactly the kind of guy you would want to have for the playoffs since there are fewer pitchers needed and each inning really, really matters. B. And he is capable of doing nothing else. C. ST sss is about the worst sss to base decisions on.
  6. Of course actual number of pitches matters more than innings, but I guess I am making this assumption based on the number of innings he threw last year? It was 130, so I would think he wouldn't go past about 160-170.
  7. I still like Herrmann. I also wonder if Nunez won't be the guy headed down after Pinto returns. The bullpen looks silly right now. I am going to have an open mind about Boyer. It was interesting to watch the bullpen tonight. Boyer and Stauffer were the only good relievers tonight. There was legit movement and placement on 95 mph fastballs from Boyer. It was interesting to see how the Red Sox veterans *clearly* knew that Graham and Burdi were going to throw straight fastballs and they punished them badly. Napoli's homer off Burdi was monstrous. But they couldn't figure out Boyer at all. A return of the Joe Mauer we know and the massive breakout of Oswaldo Arcia this year will be the two stories that will be most meaningful for the offense. Hughes and Santana will anchor the rotation and both could be AS-quality this year.
  8. On this site . . . or by the Twins? I am confused.
  9. Excellent post. One quibble is that it might be Brandon Peterson and not Jake Reed, since I assume they are in AA and A+, respectively. May, Meyer, Burdi, Peterson, Pinto, Hicks, Rosario, Sano, and Buxton moving up would be huge (all together after AS break or so). Imagine if there are no injuries or trades at that point. Suzuki, Pinto, Mauer, Vargas, Dozier, Santana, Sano, Plouffe, Escobar, Hunter, Buxton, Rosario, Hicks, and Arcia makes 14. If that could somehow work with an 11-man staff and egos that could handle a lineup rotation . . . Said staff would be Hughes, Santana, Nolasco, Gibson, May, Meyer (inning limit anyway), Duensing, Burdi, Peterson, Fien, and Perkins (something is done with Stauffer).
  10. There's only one actual prospect I would "free" immediately, and that is May. Meyer is on an innings limit anyway, so it is ok if he spends a bit of time in AAA to get going. Tonkin isn't a prospect anymore and obviously Hicks and Pinto aren't either. Rosario still needs minors time.
  11. .255/.305/.345 (.650) with 7 doubles and 2 homers. 11 stolen bases. He becomes the 4th OF for awhile and then is in Rochester after the AS break.
  12. He pounded AAA pitching last year, is an average defender at four positions, and has average speed.
  13. Not if Pelfrey is pitching an inning at a time in the bullpen. Rochester is going to be full of guys to make spot starts, so it will be May, Meyer, or Wheeler.
  14. I would like to point out that Aaron Hicks' career might be one of a 4th OF with this team. Rosario-Buxton-Arcia and Hicks as the 4th OF. Yeah, not first round caliber, but oh damn well. He could make a career out of hitting lefties and playing all three OF positions. He is going to be significantly better than the other 4th OF options the Twins have had and do have. At this point, wouldn't Hicks as a long-term 2xth man on a roster be good?
  15. His August and September last year mark a change. And he will grow from that. Look at those minors numbers again.
  16. Nice article! This is an interesting read.
  17. Rosario absolutely belongs in AA still. John busts out a lot of "who cares" stuff. Gleeman is right about Hicks hitting against lefties instead of Robinson who is terrible, somehow, against lefties. Check out the 1:09:00 mark.
  18. Sure that is strong, but it's one start as opposed to hundred of innings in the past few years. I find it ridiculous to base the decision on one game. It's *quite* the small sample size.
  19. Gleeman is beyond right about May here. I don't understand how anyone argues based on one stupid start in March . . . it's a very poor idea.
  20. Brandon Peterson is another guy. He should be with Burdi, Zach Jones, and Adrian Salcedo in the Chatty bullpen to start the year. Complete dominance from that group is possible.
