  1. Buxton should not be guaranteed the second spot on the Twins' prospect list. Tools have to move to skills. If he does it in a full season at age 19, then certainly he is right behind Sano. But Hicks and Arcia have advanced with some prowess over multiple seasons in the minor leagues. They are on the cusp and Buxton hasn't played a full season.
  2. It makes no sense whatsoever. That's just another excuse not to spend on legitimate starting pitching. The Twins are fine with current personnel in the OF. By the way, I accidentally hit the back arrow and lost a significant part of my blog post. So it will be done tomorrow. One damn simple misclick and 200 words . . . gone.
  3. The Cubs have done well. They have been aggressive and--outside of the Feldman signing--didn't settle for junk. Feldman, Correia, and Lannan are all the same--bad. Jackson settling in at some place should be good for him and he should improve. A healthy Baker fits right in at the 3 spot. Villanueva is great low risk/high reward guy for the 4 spot. And then there's Feldman. They still are the Cubs. The Twins have part of that equation filled. They have the two pitchers who are legitimate (ala Baker and Villanueva), and they certainly have 4-7 pitchers contending to be Feldman. The key early on is simply going to be Hendriks and some one of Deduno/DeVries/Walters. Pelfrey isn't going to be ready, Correia sucks, and Gibson should not be used early at all outside of 3-5 inning starts in Rochester until June.
  4. Boom. This was really good. It amazes me that evolution nay-sayers point to flaws and then stammer around when they are asked what their competing explanation is as an alternative. I have been shocked by fresh-out-of-high-school students and their attitudes toward evolution. Granted, this is Indiana youth we are talking about, but still. I honestly don't take people seriously as rational thinkers if they deny evolution just because it makes them happier to believe in a creation story. Truth doesn't bend to one's happiness. Anyway, I make it clear that people can have their gods and evolution too. No reason to be . . . crazy.
  5. Much better than the other signings if it happens, but my god they must just be trying to piece together fragments of pitchers to put together 400 innings at the back end of the rotation.
  6. Yes. Jackson at 13 per year means that Marcum is probably in the 10-12 range and cannot reasonably ask for more than 3 years.
  7. Baker>Villanueva>Pelfrey>Correia = Feldman = Garcia (if he is added) $17.5 million for B, V and F, and about $12-13 million for P, C, and G. Roughly Denard Span's salary, which was . . . saved by trading him.
  8. Both Boggs and Ramirez can be backup OF playing all three positions.
  9. Think the Orlando Hudson of the OF, but worse. And he is also declining significantly.
  10. Yeah, going into the offseason I was saying that I would rather have 2 good middle rotation guys for combined less money than Greinke alone, mainly because of the innings of quality pitching, but also because one of them might provide near or the same value as Greinke depending on performance. But there isn't a slippery slope, Terry Ryan! That doesn't mean three bottom of the rotation guys instead of two middle rotation guys, then 4 marginal starters instead of three 4-5th starters, etc.! As much as I think Anthony Swarzak is a lunatic and also not a very good pitcher, Ryan Pressly can serve as the long reliever and Swarzak the 5th starter. No need to chase after Myers and Garcia. Good god.
  11. He was underpaid every year he was healthy before 2011. In 2012 he was back right on the value of his contract.
  12. Yeah I guess this wasn't such a bad pickup. He put up the exact same OPS. as Ramirez last year, with less power but better OBP. Two years older than Ramirez.
  13. If the Twins spend a dime on Morgan, Podsednik, or Damon I will throw up. First of all, Damon is a terrible 4th OF option. Second, Morgan is a total jackass. Third, Podsednik is in full freefall and would be a total waste. Ramirez still has some time to get better and be valuable until the full corps of OF prospects arrives.
  14. Yes and I just suspect that he must be below Ramirez and even Bigley in the pecking order now. Dear God.
  15. Compare the potential WAR of a cardboard cutout of any of the three to the real Clete Thomas . . .
  16. If it really is a 4 year/$52 million deal that is not that high of a contract to pay out to somebody who is going to be solid and could be good for the length of the contract. The Twins are paying Blackburn, Correia, and Pelfrey $14 million right now.
  17. Barring career-ending injury in the next three years, yes, Joe Mauer is a lock for the HoF.
  18. I am currently blogging about this and other things and should be done by tomorrow, but here is some of that: Given how Terry Ryan has gone on to approach the starting rotation for next year, it is apparent that there is no need whatsoever to rush prospects like Hicks and Arcia at all before June 1st, for control reasons, and perhaps later for development reasons. This means an OF of Willingham-Mastroianni-Parmelee. There is an obvious question surrounding who the 4th OF is in this situation. While I think Chris Herrmann should be on the roster as a backup catcher and 5th OF, I also think that the Twins need not look outside the organization to find their 4th outfielder. Wilkin Ramirez quietly had a good year at AAA last year and has past experience in CF, so he could cover all three OF positions. His .767 OPS at AAA with 15 homers in 396 plate appearances is nothing to disregard. He is Mastro with less speed but more power. There is no reason to waste further money and this would allow for Hicks and Arcia to develop. And honestly, this would mean no return of Clete Thomas or a Komatsu clone. Outside of the starting rotation collapse at the beginning of last season, we seem to have forgotten how bad RF was for awhile too.
  19. Wow. Just wow.
  20. Yeah, there's no sense to bringing in a third baseman to compete with him. They already have defensive subs in Carroll and Escobar.
  21. $5.5 million to Blackburn, $4.5 million to Correia, $4 million to Pelfrey, and let's say $3 million to Garcia. That's $17 million towards, um, bad. Last year it was $25 million or so to very bad. And people will still contend that Mauer's contract is the problem.
  22. Freddy Garcia apparently choosing between Reds (as long-reliever), Rockies, and Twins. Let's see: if Garcia wants to make any money beyond 2013, he certainly won't take his flyball-inducing "skill" to Colorado. Competing might draw him to Cincinnati. Otherwise, methinks he's a twin. Insert Shaun Marcum instead of Kevin Corriea, and I wouldn't have minded adding Pelfrey and Garcia.
  23. I find it odd that the Twins are saying things like they are seeking someone to challenge Plouffe. Before getting injured, his offensive outburst was very impressive and that was WHILE learning third base defensively after being moved around all over the hell the past two seasons and beginning the season in the OF. Thankfully they didn't sign Hannahan. His offensive value is really sinking.
  24. Instant gratification culture infects baseball prospect evaluation . . .
