  1. Getting an extra year of control obviously should matter to a team that won't even spend over $4 million to offer to Marcum. There is also no reason to rush Hicks without first seeing AAA pitching. Skipping levels, in my view, is dumb. Very dumb.
  2. This! I am glad you took the time to write it because I would have started swearing left and right if I took the time to write out how barbarically dumb it is for the Twins not to have signed Marcum.
  3. !!!! That is a great find.
  4. Good god. I don't understand the tone and animosity for daring to list Colabello as a prospect. Regardless of age, he is fresh into professional baseball and can be labelled a prospect if one wants to do so. I have done it. Now, I probably wouldn't do it for 2014, but hopefully that is merely because he is with the Twins. The tone here is just weird. It's perfectly legitimate to consider even a 29-year-old a prospect if he is new to professional ball and can GET BETTER as the result of professional baseball experience. It isn't like we are talking about someone clinging to professional baseball's minor leagues for ten years. And Colabello should be on the 25-man roster, damn it. Why on earth not?
  5. And, yes, ec, this is the year of the middle infielder for me too. I wrote something awhile ago about the "Slim Shady" effect in the Twins system and wondering if the real SS will stand up. I like that it could be a guy called "Niko."
  6. I am proud to say that my list matches Seth's pretty well. He knows way more than I do. Though I am much more "meh" on Hermsen at the moment.
  7. Sano should start at third at Fort Myers and Harrison should start at 3B at Cedar Rapids. There is no reason to simply give up on them at those positions. Also, experimenting in the corner OF positions, especially for Harrison, would be good. 1B and DH might be where they end up though. But that move can happen at AA if it is needed.
  8. I am still flabbergasted that anyone thinks Mauer should bat third. It just seems like such a preposterous thing. Oh well.
  9. This is exactly right although they could keep him on an innings-limit in Rochester for awhile.
  10. I really cannot entertain any arguments that Mauer should be the 3 hitter. He should be the leadoff hitter, if speed and power weren't the two vital components after OBP in terms of scoring runs. So failing 1 or 3, he should bat second. One alternative that I would be willing to consider would be leading off Mastro (absent Hicks) against lefties only, and then either batting Mauer leadoff against righties, or um, Parmelee or something. That leads to a further point: there is a way to really maximize this lineup based on R/L splits (especially if Herrmann and/or Colabello were on the roster, but alas). Gardy won't do that, we know, but still. For instance there is just ZERO reason not to have Mastro-Mauer-Willingham in most games against lefties (and some of those times substituting Mauer out for Carroll or whomever). Plouffe could bat 5th behind Morneau in such a situation.
  11. Interesting to see the Parmelee and Nick Johnson discussion. I always liked Johnson a LOT when he was healthy. But therein lies the problem. Parmelee batting second is interesting to me (if Gardenhire is simply unwilling to bat Mauer there). Of the MI options, only Carroll could conceivably be considered in the top two spots. And I really fail to see any real reason to worry about Carroll's 401 plate appearances. Isn't it $2 million? Who cares?
  12. This is a good article and good slant to Polanco's future. It could actually be Polanco starting and Santana in that role. Or Beresford. I do think that the Twins actually could find themselves with Rosario, Polanco, Santana, Michael, Beresford, and Plouffe for 3 infield spots and two bench spots in 2015-2016.
  13. Exactly! I fully don't understand those who scoff at improving the team, even in small ways regarding the last spot on the roster. No one could dream of using Butera for anything other than is defense as a catcher, which is overblown in the first place. Herrmann will be a viable left handed pinch hitter (batter really, as he can draw a good amount of walks) and he can be a 5th OF (and, right now, the Twins might kinda need that). In Shane's world, both Herrmann and Colabello saw AAA time last year and would be on the 25-man roster this year to start the season (given the Span and Revere trades).
  14. Obviously a hell yes from me. The old adage is wrong. The best OBP and overall hitters should be batting 1,2, and 4, with a speedier type batting first and a power guy 4th. The guy batting 3rd should be a slugger because he often comes up with no one on base and two out in the first inning (Willingham). Batting fifth should be another slugger, but one who shouldn't live and die with it and simply be a HR or K guy. Disclaimer: lineup construction is somewhat overrated and does really only take shape in the first inning (though it can still be the case in 1-4 innings in tight games). That said: X Mauer Willingham Morneau (here's to hoping that he returns to form in 2013. Doumit Plouffe Parmelee X X would seem to make the most sense.
  15. I don't see Herrmann as someone in need of extra time in the minors. I find it stupid that he wasn't moved to AAA last year in the first place. I don't think he is a star or perhaps even a regular. But he is certainly a contributor to a major league roster. And Drew Butera IS NOT. AT ALL. There is no getting around that. I think Butera would be fantastic as a AAA catcher helping to instruct pitchers coming up in the system. Meanwhile Herrmann provides actual versatility to the roster and can play multiple positions well (unlike Doumit). And he is going to hit well enough to be considered an actual bench bat (which Butera never has nor will be). Wasting time on Butera in the majors is just ridiculous and dumb. They might as well give Danny Lehmann the spot instead if they are going to keep Herrmann in the minors for most of the year.
  16. The key is sticking at second base. If so, then he is a GREAT prospect because he is a great all-around hitter.
  17. Your proposal wasn't so crazy at all. In fact, you could probably switch out Hermsen for Benson and that would do it (no one should be THAT high on Hermsen at the moment and there needs to be a near-ready prospect involved).
  18. A full year at AAA and a callup in September and I guarantee you the general attitude towards his future would not be so negative. Only SUPER elite prospects should skip AAA (Sano).
  19. 80 and 20. He should not be there the full year, in my view. In New Britain, the numbers will be better for him. He ought to be there by mid-July and probably learning first base.
  20. 16 votes.
  21. How many votes are you getting as compared to how many they get at Twinkie Town? As compared to the total active population of Twins Daily?
  22. There just needs to be a simple vote and not pre-lim anything. This is not going to garner much involvement as even I am confused. Just put 5 players up for vote and ask for additions in the next round in the comments. And tell people that the biggest number of addition suggestions will win out to be in the next five. This three-grouping doesn't work and it isn't clear what is actually occurring right now. This isn't a big deal for a fairly consensus top 8-10, but it will after that.
  23. I'm sorry but you need to list the prospects already on the list as we go. Don't make us search like Twinkie Town did/does. I don't really understand what has happened here. Meyer is only now listed? What? Who are the top 4--Sano, Buxton, Hicks, and Arcia? I have to assume that, but how was Meyer not in more serious early consideration? Rosario was. I suggest moving this vote-for-three to a vote-for-five. It isn't too bad now, but it would be bad very soon.
  24. This thread is making me go crazy. Good god. Even if the Twins are bad again in 2013, signing someone who will be a potential trade asset at the deadline would be a smart move. And I am not convinced that the Twins are going to be very bad. A full year of a healthy Plouffe and a healthy Morneau, coupled with the potential rise of Hicks and Arcia? This doesn't sound so bad offensively as an improvement (and the offense was NOT the problem last year). What the Twins have done so far was add one legitimate pitcher (though as Nick as made clear to me, Worley is not innings-tested at all) and a replacement level pitcher when the Twins already have a half dozen of them in the system. They added correctly for 2015 and that is fine, but they cannot just bank on the future--they must at least try in the present. And it is/was not totally out of their reach to do so. That is the goddamned point. Now I can't but leave this ridiculous thread.
  25. Yeah this is pretty true. A Diamond-Marcum-Worley top three is actually bordering on legitimate as a top three. This is not true when 5th-6th starter Correia has to enter that picture. Also, keep in mind that Chicago is going nowhere, KC and Cleveland are up in the air with no true clear way to 85 wins, and the Tigers are a key injury away from being a problem. And IN ANY EVENT. Signing someone legitimate even if the team ends up not being good could mean to a TRADE to a contender at the deadline and the Twins might get something of value for the future. It's an investment and the Twins are willing to do it, apparently.
