  1. My plan for the 2014 Twins is to be drunk until Sano, Rosario, and Buxton arrive. I'll let you judge which is the better plan.
  2. Badsmerf, Also, 10 > 5. So there's that.
  3. Badsmerf, 1. After April, Hicks posted about a .700 OPS. 2. It is true that Hicks only adapted quickly to a promotion when moving to AA. 3. If he had started 2013 in AAA I would have been 50/50 on whether or not he would adapt that quickly again. 4. Starting with the Twins, there is no way to *expect* a quick learn, especially from him given his minor league history. 5. Thus, a .700 OPS for a full season is kind of a realistic expectation for Aaron Hicks' first year in the majors. 6. I still want to see how many players have (we'll say in the last ten years) skipped AAA and been put into the leadoff position for the major league club to start a season. And if there are such players, I wonder how well they did and how long it was before they headed to AAA. 7. I remember one player, Alex Gordon, who skipped AAA and was put around 6th in the Royal lineup in 2007 (I think). He was pretty bad and he was the number 2 prospect in all of baseball going into that year. 8. Batting leadoff has certain expectations about recognizing pitches and having good discipline. Hicks hadn't seen real MLB pitching. Hence, look at that April. 9. A guy who has taken time with each promotion jumps a level and then starts in the leadoff position and fails badly. Is that a surprise? 10. Hicks hit well from the left side in 2012. It is not a forgone conclusion that he can't do it effectively.
  4. First, Parmelee hasn't even gotten a chance to play every day for an extended period of time. I don't even like him that much, but this team has been odd with him for the past two seasons. Willingham and Doumit are both terrible defenders, and Arcia is scary right now. Doumit is not needed for anything and Willingham is seriously declining right before our eyes. Hold onto these players? What?
  5. I couldn't care less about what he has "in the tank." For what? To add a win or two for the Twins until next season's deadline? No thanks.
  6. How many players have skipped AAA altogether and then been asked to be the leadoff hitter for the major league team to begin a season?
  7. If it isn't that hard, why don't more players do it when they struggle more from one side of the plate. I do think there is too much fuss about Hicks. April was terrible for him, but I wouldn't have expected much else from him than what he did the rest of the year, which is around .700 OPS. He was NEVER someone to do well right away after a promotion until he did it in 2012 in AA. Skipping a level altogether? Having the pressure of being the leadoff hitter right away (which demands plate discipline . . . a skill that he has, but is a different beast if you haven't SEEN MLB pitching!).
  8. Devin Jones or Parker Bridwell are worth looking at, though Jones has been smacked this year. I want nothing to do with Willingham next year. He and Arcia on the same roster worries me and it is time to move away from old declining players.
  9. What was his OPS against righties from May onward?
  10. These are the dudes I wrote about a few months ago (stats NOT updated) Tim Berry, LHP, starter, 22 (A+) 2013 A+: 4.54, 69.1, 66/17 Twins system: likely headed to Fort Myers Zach Davies, RHP, starter, 20 (A+) 2013 A+: 3.63, 74.1, 58/19 Twins system: likely headed to Fort Myers. Devin Jones, RHP, starter, 22 (AA) 2013 AA: 4.84, 67.0, 58/20 Twins system: likely headed to Fort Myers Josh Hader, LHP, starter, 19 (A) 2013 A: 1.94, 60.1, 56/30 Twins system: likely head to Cedar Rapids. Torsten Boss, LH, 3B, 22 (A) 2013 A: 221, .251/.333/.405 (.738), 11/2/5, 23/49, 2-3 Twins system: likely headed to Cedar Rapids.
  11. Thanks. And I do think that is pretty ideal, and wonder how long it would take him to get to that. If it is so damn easy to make this switch I imagine more players would have done it.
  12. That doesn't answer the question. I am pretty curious about how common this is for anyone who has touched the majors or gotten even to AA.
  13. On Pirates MLB site, Kingham a 9, Dickerson a 13, and Sampson a 20.
  14. Those were all guys roughly in the 10-20 on Pirates prospect list. Kingham has ended up doing pretty well in AA.
  15. Back now over two months ago, I blogged about a trade involving the Pirates (NOTE: these are the stats from back then. ALSO NOTE: Vic Black was the PTNBL with the Mets): Pittsburgh Pirates: Vic Black, RHP, reliever, 25 (AAA) 2013 AAA: 2.62, 24.0, 33/11 Twins system: likely headed to Rochester Nick Kingham, RHP, starter, 21 (A+/AA) 2013 A+: 3.09, 70, 75/14 Twins system: likely headed to New Britain Adrian Sampson, RHP, starter, 21 (A+) 2013 A+: 5.56, 66.1, 37/12 (2012 numbers in A ball included a 9.3/9 K rate) Twins system: likely headed to Fort Myers Max Moroff, SH, SS, 20 (A) 2013 A: 248, .228/.350/.351 (.701), 9/1/5, 39/40, 4-9 Twins system: likely headed to Cedar Rapids Alex Dickerson, LH, 1B/RF, 23 (AA) 2013 AA: 216, .238/.285/.417 (.702) 17/2/5, 13/51, 3-5 Twins system: likely headed to New Britain
  16. Yeah, I like all five. Grimes has been moved back to second of late--not sure why. Romero definitely deserves a shot. He is yet another guy who can also play first base. If the Twins are not going to find a place to platoon Parmelee and Plouffe, I would like to see Plouffe traded at some point for some thing. Given his price and power potential, the return might not be too bad. Romero can fill in and maybe end up being the real "bench bat with pop" that Wilkin Ramirez was supposed to be this year. I have been puzzled by them not playing Beresford at SS. I cannot imagine that this is just some innocuous thing. I mean he barely has played there at all this year and there is no reason for him not to be the starting shortstop at Rochester. It seems obvious that he can handle second base at a high level. Beresford is either a utility guy (post Dozier?) or a starting shortstop on a powerful team (one with Sano and Rosario also in the infield . . .). J.D. Williams is a favorite of mine and I hope he basically mimic this season's performance next year and is at AA in August 2014. Down the road he might be the perfect 4th OF (once the Twins actually have three). I am not high on Larson yet. There isn't a lot there, ultimately, but he has been surprising so far.
  17. Anyone know what the average split gap is between righties vs. lefties and righties vs. righties? Wouldn't this be a baseline to see how far Hicks' numbers would fall from the right side?
  18. Vik Black is one of the players I mentioned about 6 weeks ago. Absolutely would like him.
  19. Is this the Orioles or something?
  20. Like, wha??? I am onto something here. No one is going to trade for Justin Morneau.
  21. I am in the minority here, clearly. Was his performance in AA in 2012 against righties just an aberration, then?
  22. Have people forgotten the trajectory and performances year-to-year in the minors for Aaron Hicks? People are *this* down on him even though he clearly didn't belong in MLB for 2013? Granted he didn't need an extra year to figure out AA, but that one time occurrence in his career (!) didn't warrant *skipping* a level. The Twins were patient with him, then they really weren't patient and jumped him a level. I think being patient with him is a good idea. Projecting 2013 forward in such a negative way as to consider ending his switch-hitting!?
  23. I like the idea of signing Johan even if it ends up meaning he retires as a Twin. Rebuilding does require veterans, yes. That's why the Twins like Ramirez's veteran presence . . . wait, what? Seriously, though, I do think, um, a veteran Latin player might be a good FA pickup for a 25th spot for 2014 and 2015. Probably an OF?
