  1. His career actually has some Olivaness, though a couple years earlier. He was phenomenal through age 32, but only had one season with more than 75 games after that point. That was in a renaissance year thanks to the implementation of the DH in 1973. His most-similar player on b-r.com is Eddie Murray through age 33 before tailing off to Carlos Lee at career end. His Hall of Fame balloting (and general reputation) was significantly hurt by an arrest for smuggling marijuana, but he was finally elected by the Veteran’s Committee.
  2. A four-man bench leading to mid-game positional switches. He hasn’t actually STARTED 20 games at any of the positions, though his next start in left will be that.
  3. I don’t think I would, but I won’t throw a fit if they let him try for another. Then again, they do have an off day Monday, so he’ll have an extra day.
  4. Amidst my comments earlier about Santana’s career, I didn’t recognize the death of Orlando Cepeda. Sad couple of weeks for fans of the 1960s Giants.
  5. LAKE Ontario, with the islands shared by Ontario and New York. And for the record, that’s easier to say than the “One Thousand, Eight Hundred Sixty Four Islands.”
  6. Seattle-area geography had me thinking — in this polarized world we live in, isn’t it amazing that a thousand islands could come together to agree on one dressing?
  7. From low 60s after three to 84 after five.
  8. Is it just me or did Martin REALLY slow down when he stuck the landing on that slide?
  9. Wasn’t there a discussion recently about how many Twins FO people are following TD? Maybe Maki is following the Game Threads.
  10. Mariner guys also discussing that he changed shirts for last inning.
  11. Santana’s not a HOFer, obviously, but 20 years from now, people are going to look at his b-r.com page and say, “That was a pretty good player.” Per 162 games, he’s averaged 31 doubles, 25 homers, 85 RBIs and 100 walks and currently a 114 OPS+. Nine seasons of 150+ games and on pace for a 10th. EDITS to add: 300+ career homers, likely 400+ doubles. Currently 55th among 1Bs in career bWAR. (Aside, Rizzo recently pushed Hrbek out of the top 50 in bWAR.)
  12. Though I griped about the late start, the one redeeming fact is that it’s a rare opportunity to actually watch a game, since it’s the late night regional game on MLB Network and I’m in the Tiger blackout area, so it’s the only game they can give me.
  13. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40462461/escalator-malfunction-brewers-park-injuries-11-people
  14. WHO Des Moines, "coast to coast, border to border and then some," got me hooked on the Twins when they were part of the network. I lived two hours away from Des Moines, so I didn't need the range, but I do remember listening to Iowa basketball games on a Christmas trip to relatives in Florida.
  15. A boat ride at Kenai Fjords (National Park) would be atop the list of the things we didn't do and would prioritize next time, along with scheduling in order to be able to see the Aurora Borealis. The three biggest land highlights were the train ride from Seward to Anchorage, hiking to the Russian River Falls to see salmon going upriver (complete adrenaline rush!) and a flightseeing trip with glacier landing at Denali.
  16. We were on the Celebrity Summit. It was part of a group, so we didn't have a choice in ships, but we were pleased. The cruise part was awesome, and I'd do it again, but if you can swing spending some time on land, do that as well. Alaska is a big, beautiful state.
  17. It truly was a gift, and I’m still on a high. We spent seven days on a cruise from Vancouver to Seward and then nine days on land. The baseball connection is that we only had to extend our vacation by a day to take in the Midnight Sun Game. Fairbanks is about 140 miles south of the Arctic Circle, and every year since 1906 they have played a game on the summer solstice. It starts at 10 p.m. and is played without lights. The game wrapped up at 12:45 a.m. Lights would have been helpful at the end, but I’m guessing we’ve all played games as a kid with the amount of light that was present. The Alaska League was once of the better summer wood bat leagues and more than 200 game alumni have played in the majors, including HOFers Tom Seaver and Dave Winfield. This year they erected a statue of Winfield to commemorate a monster homer he hit, and he was on hand to throw out the first pitch. Lots more I could write about it, and maybe I will sometime. In the meantime, if you are considering a trip to Alaska, do it and consider doing it at a time when you can take in the game. In order, opening pitch, a shot from the right field corner and one of the first pitches after midnight (and though official sunset wasn’t until 12:48, so it got a little darker).
  18. And Torontoraptors pretty bad basketball players.
  19. You don't even have to be an east coaster to imagine it. I'm only 100 miles east of you, and I have to put up with these late starts. Even home games start as late as 8:10 for me. It's annoying. I'm told that the time zone line should be about 100 miles east of where I live, and most of Indiana is much more oriented to Chicago than it is to New York. I strongly wish we were on Central time. On a related note, Mrs. IT and I just spent 16 days in Alaska in a Covid-delayed celebration of her early retirement from teaching. It was awesome having games played in late-afternoon/early evening and to even have the Oakland games start at a beautiful time.
  20. I would (see previous comment). It's just a bad idea to immediately change the rules in overtime. I think of it as analogous to soccer, where even those settings that do use penalty kicks almost always do it after a period of "regular play" overtime.
  21. It's the perfect example of why I don't like going directly to the Manfred Man rule.* Play two more innings straight up and go to those rules in the 12th, if need be. Sands got a ground out and another ground ball that may well have been an out if there wasn't a runner on third. At worst, it's a runner on first. The extreme case is the visiting team pitcher carrying a perfect game to the 10th, where the home team bunts the runner to third and then wins on a sac fly. *And I'd say the same thing if the Twins won that way, though I wouldn't do with such disdain, at least this time.
  22. The Twins do have Lopez, Ryan, Ober, Paddack, and Woods Richardson (plus Festa, Varland and others) under contract for 2025. This isn't to say that that rotation can't/should be improved, but given that July is always a sellers market, I'd rather only pay a premium for a half season than for 1.5 or 2.5 seasons. Additionally, I think all three of these teams are such that they aren't ready to punt 2025, so I think they'd be reluctant to trade guys they have under control for next year. That said, I do agree with your prediction that the Twins do more tinkering than making a big splash.
  23. The throw was in the dirt. Virtually any throw that hits the dirt is going to be charged to the thrower, even though I'm sure Santana would say he should have (and probably has) made the play.
  24. Only because they are dead. However, I would take my chances with the '27 version of Coombs, Koenig, Ruth, Gehrig, Meusel, Lazzeri, Dugan, Vasquez (2024 version), pitcher.
