  1. The three concerns I heard were that the training facilities aren't up to par, the lights aren't good MLB quality, and the field dimensions are small, both in terms of outfield distance and small foul territory, making pitchers fear it as being too hitter-happy.
  2. They technically have until Wednesday, since they start with five games on the road. A real plus with Pittsburgh is that their schedules only had seven home dates that overlapped, and two of those were getaway days.
  3. Actually, Pennsylvania nixed that today. Sounds like Baltimore and playing as the home team in road parks are the next options in line.
  4. I read somewhere that he gets Saturday, with Maeda on Sunday. Or the other way around.
  5. Jon Heyman reports that MLB and MLBPA have re-engaged on the possibility of a 16-team playoff.
  6. Crazy, isn't it. Hope he's not walkin' too many after midnight.
  7. I wish we had an "official tankless water heater of the Twins Radio Network" like the Cubs have Navien.
  8. I'm taking the opportunity to listen to the top-notch Pat Hughes on the Cubs network. He's joined by Cubs and Twins legend Ron Coomer. My analysis of Coomer is that his problem is he's too average. Whereas Ron Santo was technically lousy, he was such a homer (while not being obnoxious like the Avian-named South Sider) that he was great fun to listen to when paired with Hughes. Coomer is much better that Santo, but he's not excellent, so you can't help but think about how good things could be with Hughes. Bailey has a "beefy" ERA of 5.20 against the Cubs, per Hughes. He is, however, one of five active pitchers with a pair of no-hitters.
  9. Hypothesis: Madison is a university town, so demographics may skew younger than typical baseball fans. There's also more coming and going in university towns, so there's less opportunity for longer-term allegiances. And having grown up 15 minutes from Iowa City and now living near Notre Dame, I'm guessing that primary sports allegiances in Madison are to the Badgers, which is a very difficult nut to crack. There's also two other major league teams (three, if you count the White Sox ) within a 2:30 drive to compete with.
  10. I'm not convinced. The examples I can think of with the AAA team in the same Metro area (Atlanta/Gwinnett, Texas/Frisco) are considerably larger Metro areas with larger populations within an hour or two's drive. As to minor league affliliates driving major league fandom, I suspect it makes less difference than we think. There's a really cool Web site that shows fan affiliation by ZIP code, at least as measured by Facebook: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/04/24/upshot/facebook-baseball-map.html?_r=0#8,40.074,-96.760. In Omaha, for example, the Royals don't show up in the top three favorites, despite being the KC AAA team for more than 50 years and being the closest team geographically. One has to go south of Lincoln a bit before the Royals start to register. As to those mentioned, the Lincoln and Sioux Falls Metro areas rank between 152 and 182, and neither have populous outlying areas. FWIW, Cedar Rapids is between them, so if you're going to consider either of the former, you might as well consider the latter, and I don't think that's realistic. By population, if you want a larger Midwestern city that's under-represented in the MILB scene, Grand Rapids is a better choice. It's the 51st-largest market and currently only has a Class A team. It also has significant outlying population and frankly, a fair amount of wealth/opportunity for corporate sponsorship.
  11. I was wondering about this. With this scenario, he could easily have some games when he hits three markers, one for the start and two for innings levels. In theory, he could even get four incentives if he has something like 55.2 innings though 10 starts and goes 7.1 to reach 56, 59, and 63 in his 11th start.
  12. Welp. I guess I’ll put it back in the freezer.
  13. I mainly listen on the radio, so I’m learning why folks seem to like Mourneau a lot.
  14. I was watching some playoff replays this winter, and Maeda looked filthy. In one inning he struck out the side on pitches about eight inches outside. I’m really excited to have him on board.
  15. Is it just me, or did Jason Kubel come out of retirement to wear No 16 again?
  16. I think I’m going to go ahead and thaw out some chicken.
  17. Blackouts will generally be a bigger issue this year for many fans because of the regional schedules. In northern Indiana, I'm blacked out of Cubs, Sox, Reds and Tigers. That's 26 games out of 60, or 43 percent of the season. I'm blacked out of the final two weeks and would only be able to get 5 out of the last 26 games.
  18. I'd like to see an average of three out of four starts, with a reasonably quick hook in blowouts. (And extra days off in the final two weeks after they have clinched the division. )
  19. In terms of strategery, it seems like the home-field advantage might be more significant with the extra-innings rules.
  20. It’s also a plus that Pittsburgh is one of their four-game opponents. Cleveland also doesn’t have an off day in the first week, so their rotation would set up to be starters 2-5 on the second weekend, whereas we would go 1-4. Living in EDT, it’s a major plus to have no PDT games.
