  1. I thought he was a starter too, but in his admittedly small sample of 15 starts, he has lasted an average of 4.4 innings per start and made it more than 5.1 innings only twice. Those lamenting the overuse of the bullpen may be disappointed if that pattern continues. I prefer the option Mike describes three comments above, starting the first inning after Shoemaker and Happ have been pulled, going 2-3 innings. To do that requires adjusting the rotation somewhere, however, since the two are now back-to-back. But they should be doing that anyway, since it also means Maeda/Berrios/Pineda (and thus the days the bullpen is most likely to be somewhat spared) are back-to-back-to-back.
  2. Welcome to my strategy for drafting catchers. There was at least a hope that Ottavino might end up a closer.
  3. Lady from my church called in the bottom of the ninth in a tie game. What was she thinking? Then again, I answered. What was I thinking? At any rate, I would have observed that as the not-so-proud owner of Ottavino in not one, but two fantasy leagues, I could have told you that it was very likely the Twins would score. Sorry I wasn't here in advance to put everyone's mind at ease.
  4. Provus's description of where the ump included a double "sensitive." I'm going to guess it was, to quote a basketball announcer from my childhood, it was the "extreme lower stomach area"?
  5. Rocco with the defensive substitution!
  6. Don't like this idea. Though if they'd like to invoke this rule for the rest of today, I'd be fine with that.
  7. That's even better than improving his BABIP!!!!!!
  8. Gladden, talking about the RISPy slump: "I've got them at 3 for 42." Yeah, right, Dano, like you've been keeping track. That came straight from the media notes.
  9. What? Who? I don’t know.
  10. That's my kind of mom.
  11. Some on TD have convinced me that Gladden is okay doing color. The issue is that he's so BAD in his three innings of play-by-play that it's hard to give him a break during the other innings. It is such a welcome break when Gladden is on vacation and we get Provus and Atteberry.
  12. Oh, and in addition to Byron's McBat, for the second day in a row, Sano missed the cycle by a single, double, triple and homer.
  13. This definitely hurts, but for context, Trevor May has a 2.57 WHIP and a 7.71 ERA going into today. In other action, other options we could have signed -- Baez, Rosenthal, Hand (COVID), Soria, Yates and Clippard -- are all on the IL.
  14. Time to bring in the relief ACE. That's the Alex Colome Experience.
  15. I knew it was time to hang up my shoes when I was playing on a vintage Base Ball team (1858 rules) a couple years ago and hit a double into the gap, but almost got thrown out trying to stretch it into a single.
  16. He didn't resist when my regular pastor wasn't available for last rites, so a called another holy person to fill in. All that one could say was, "Ooohhhmm."
  17. And speaking of my son, I once caught him chewing on an electrical cord. I grounded him. Don't worry, though. He's doing better currently and conducting himself properly.
  18. If Byron goes hitless the rest of the day, it will be his second McBat in three days. That's "Missed Cycle By A Triple," a new category my son and I came up with last year.
  19. My wife asked me if I could clear the kitchen table. I had to get a running start, but I made it!
  20. I hope Byron doesn't get flustered when the "Can Buxton hit .500" media hype begins.
  21. I like playing with numbers as well, so here's one I just came up with on the topic of prime numbers. Nelson Cruz is 53rd on the career list, with 421 career homers. Both are prime numbers. Looking through the list on baseball-reference.com, it looks like Rafael Palmeiro (13th at 569) and David Ortiz (17th at 541) are the only two ahead of him where the rank and the total are both prime. (I will leave it to others to comment on whether Cruz, Palmeiro, and Ortiz share anything else in common.)
