  2. I feel like the recent run is a bubble, but we'll find out soon enough.
  3. Yeah. As long as we are respectful at the end of the day, it's all good.
  4. It's nice to see that Nick Punto rubbed off on somebody.
  5. Yeah well I hope you have a thick skin in case lunch is actually something else.
  6. Yeah, I know. Nevertheless, you should have responded thusly: DaveW: To be fair, I wasn't the one who changed the topic to say DaveW. Missed opportunity. :/
  7. Looks like a guy who has potential. We'll see if the Twin flip him for someone else.
  8. I like the topic of this thread, where it contains the name of the poster. We need more threads like this. DaveW: Wonder to stop making sliced bread DaveW: World peace will be achieved unless we nuke each other first DaveW: I'm hungry, what's for lunch
  9. The problem isn't "fake news" per se -- that has always existed. What went wrong is the pay-per-click advertising model used by Google and Facebook. Displaying news stories written by the highest bidder was bound to be exploited at some point and we should have all seen this one coming. Google and Facebook have been mum on the subject, as they are probably rather happy about all the cash they earned during this election season. However, at some point as a nation we need to hold their feet to the fire on this one. As we bicker about "fake news" we continue to miss the point as to what really happened. PPC advertising is going to break this country unless we regulate it. It may have already broken the country. PPC has become a security issue as it is exploitable by foreign entities. This is a major problem.
  10. Molitor is quoted as speaking with Sano's trainers, just not with Sano directly. Do you believe that Molitor is speaking to Sano's personal trainers? That seems very unlikely if not impossible. Why would Sano pay for personal trainers when the team will provide them? Look, being an athlete is a full-time commitment. Sure you can get weekends off during the offseason like the rest of us, but should by no means be sitting on his hands for six months. And there is zero point in "training in a bubble" -- the Twins and him should be working together on the same plan.
  11. Who cares? This isn't about DaveW. If he is wrong, so what?
  12. Palka moved up fast last year. The idea of him being ready for 2017 seemed impossible until very recently, but now it seems like he has a chance. I would wager the Twins would want him to work on his K totals in the minors a bit, however.
  13. These aren't days off. He is training with trainers.
  14. The House votes to impeach. The House is controlled by Republicans. Won't happen.
  15. The best plan for improving attendance is to try to lose less than 90 games. Dozier has been on a lot of teams that have not accomplished that feat. On a different roster, Dozier is incredibly valuable. But he can't carry this team on his own.
  16. He needs to be able to play multiple positions for this plan to work. Nick Punto hit at this level (in a good year) but he played defense at every position on the field other than catcher. That's pretty much what would need to happen for your idea to be feasible.
  17. Several reasons. 1) Dozier's power did not help the team at all last year. 2) Dozier is about to hit his decline years. 3) His replacement is ready. 4) The Twins have other holes that need to be plugged. 5) Though he's the team's "best player" he is by no means a hall of fame candidate. Half of the White Sox roster is as good as Dozier is, and the White Sox did not even make the playoffs.
  18. "In dealing away Sale, the White Sox have apparently committed to a blow-up rebuild, with reports of Jose Quintana, Todd Frazier and Jose Abreu now being on the block. Some will look at this as the path the Twins should have taken, and maybe still should take." The Twins can't take that path. The Twins don't have anyone who can hold a candle to Chris Sale or those other guys.
  19. You can replace his production, you just need to think of it as zero sum. Something like this: - Dozier 4 WAR (This is just to make it easy). - Current Twins starter W is worth 1 WAR Trade Dozier for: - Player X (2 WAR) - replaces player W - Prospect Y (projection 2 WAR) Displaced Player W is then flipped for another 1 WAR prospect at a position of need. 5 WAR = 5 WAR But this is just for one season. Front offices will be looking at career potential, not 1 year, unless they are making a trade at the midseason trade deadline.
  20. If the Twins get rid of Mauer, it would have to be by releasing him outright. This means they could not use his salary for other things. Also, I don't think money is an issue for the team.
  21. There is an article on mlb.com about how the new leadership finally gave Dozier a call last week to talk to him for the first time. The conversation was that, yes, they intend to trade him. Note that Dozier is at the winter meetings now, likely so that potential trade targets can meet with him personally.
  22. I don't think this practice in and of itself is flawed or unusual. All teams do this. The Twins have had success in this area (see Joe Nathan). It's customary for the 5th and sometimes 4th starters to be determined in spring training in addition to 1 or 2 relievers and 1 or 2 positional players, not to mention the bench players. This is for all teams, not just the Twins. BUT I think recently the decisions that the Twins have made after spring training have been wrong decisions. It seems to me they were looking more at personalities first, age/cost second. Note that ability and potential aren't even listed there. They were using business criteria and not baseball criteria to determine who made the team out of spring training and then trying to stash veterans and those with more potential in the minors. Ryan lost his mind.
  23. Right, but I'm not talking about scouting reports. I'm talking about the online Twins fans who were reading blogs and journalists, followed by echoing what they were reading that Hicks was about to become an all star at any second. People who read blogs tend to say they got their info from scouting reports and scouts, but they have never actually read any such material. An oft-cited writer *again* wrote that Hicks was going to have a breakout year in 2016. Hicks is a great defender and the Twins missed his defense when he got bounced between the majors and minors. But he can't hit and the chances of that changing were always slim. I bet that if I start nosing around, I'll find a certain writer who has written that Vielma has a bright future and that's where all of this is coming from.
  24. I said nothing about scouting reports being wrong or right. I'm talking about people who base their entire opinion of players on BLOGS written by someone who read scouting reports. Either read the original source (the actual scouting reports) or go by the stats. Blogs are not a primary source, the other two are. And if someone is going on about "5 tools" then be particularly skeptical. If the tool to smack the hell out of the ball with the bat is absent, none of the other tools will matter.
