  1. Probably more Bill Smith, who was the GM from 2007 to 2011 than Terry. He traded away both Johan Santana and Matt Garza. And basically whiffed on every first round and supplemental pick from 2008 to 2011, save Gibson who was out for two years with TJ. Garza had a sub 4.00 ERA each year from 2007 to 2013. Had the Twins played their cards right with Johan he would not have needed a 7 year deal and he had 3 more good years thru age 31. If any of this is on Terry it is that one.
  2. From 2011 to 2014 we had about the worst rotation in baseball. Literally no pitching prospects stepped up during that time period, save Gibson last year who was still a little hit or miss. That is why those guys were signed. Gibson and May have looked like they are pieces and Berrios has not skipped a beat on his march up here. So I don't see any new additions to the rotation and Pelfrey will be gone. Personally, I think Terry is salivating at the cheap labor he has coming through right now. The last thing he wants to do is sign another Nolasco or Santana.
  3. We will just have to disagree. I think Sano, May, Buxton, and Berrios will all be with the squad all year next year barring injury. May and Berrios in the rotation. Berrios and Buxton will be up Sept. 1 of this year at the latest.
  4. That really isn't the point. Whether you give a once all star/cy young guy $200M from ages 31-38....or give a slightly above average pitcher 4/49, both are likely to end up as "awful bad contracts". The fact that the one has a higher number is a reflection that the player was once better. But in all cases, all the teams above have made poor decisions in that regards. Some can absorb them better than others. But swapping GM's won't fix that. That is an owner issue.
  5. We are .500 right now. It is entirely realistic to me that if you annualize Sano's production, add Buxton, and swap Berrios for Pelfrey, and give May 15 additional starts a year we could squeak out 7 more wins.
  6. At one point they were all stars. The term was "awful veteran contract". Every one now either qualifies as one or has a long, commitment in which the outlook is not good. The fact that those teams may have an owner that will let them dump a guy like Hamilton is not Terry's issue. It should also be noted that Nolasco's for example, pales in comparison to the horrible Pujols, Hamilton, or Zito contract.
  7. Not the most inspiring list Spy! Hunter, Pelfrey, Boyer, Duensing, and Robinson have no business being here next year. That is five from the 25 man. Most could be replaced by guys already on the 40 man, save Berrios.
  8. None of the teams mentioned have avoided bad veteran contracts. Boston - How does the Sandoval and Ramirez contract not end up bad? They gave John Lackey $90M. Carl Crawford? Tigers - Verander anyone? Prince/Kinsler? Victor. Angles - The Pujols deal has been bad and will not get better over the next 7-8 years. They paid Hamilton $85M to not play for them. Giants - Barry Zito? Lincecum? Cards - They offered Pujols $200m+ and 10 years and got lucky
  9. How many "continually win championships"? Since 2001, Boston (3), Giants (3), Cards (2) have won more than one. Boston had nine years between their first and third and it had been a while prior to that. Five years for the Cards. Not sure if that counts as "continually", but that would be 10% of the league. I would just caution, if that is the bar the odds of being satisfied are really low.
  10. Do we have gaps, absolutely. But how many teams in the league right now would trade their best 3 players for Sano, Berrios, and Buxton? I would venture 20 at least. And how many can look out the next 2-3 years and say they have elite pitching, a great shortstop, a great pen,, a good catcher, no overpaid veterans, etc? Very few, if any.
  11. In addition to Parker's #4, he is also by far the worst defensive OF on the roster. I would say that he lost his spot in the lineup due to his defense and continued struggle against lefties. He also was hot dogging it a bit, which is not what you expect from a guy on thin ice. He was sent down and other stepped up, like Hicks and Rosario. Then Sano came up and took the DH spot. Not overly complicated. Moving forward we have a few options options: 1) Give him another shot in a corner OF spot. The issue is how can you take out Rosario or Hicks at this point? 2) Give him a shot at DH. This would involve a Plouffe trade and moving Sano to 3B. 3) Platoon. He has always been in the upper .700's in OPS against righties. Last I checked that means about 80% of the games. 4) Trade him. 5) Hold on too long and DFA him or trade him for a bag of peanuts. Sorry guys, but methinks it will end up being #5. #3 would be ideal but I don't think the Twins will ever devote a roster spot for a platoon player.
  12. "Their hesitation to add Berrios to the 40-man roster for what will likely be only a start or two is frustrating for those of us eager to see him." It is pretty nonsensical that the 40 man would be an issue. For one, I think we are at 39 as Fryer is off now. Secondly, the 40 man is littered with a bunch of players that we know right now are not helping the current team and have very little shot of being on the 40 man next year. The most obvious is Pinto. It is fairly clear we have no clue what we are going to do with him, don't view him as a catcher or a DH. If we view him as the DH, he has to be about 5th in line there. A few other guys not likely to be on the 40 man next year. Wheeler, Duensing, Robsinson, Darnell, and Thompson. Obviously Pelfrey but they think he is helping right now.
  13. I think the bridge, 7-8th inning issues we were having had something to do with May going to the pen.
  14. Big picture. I am very pleased with how the year has gone from a prospect perspective. It was a bummer that Buxton got hurt again and awful that Meyer looks like a reclamation project at this point. But Berrios has not missed a beat and looks on the cusp. Rosario has exceeded expectations and Hicks may have salvaged his career and future here. And that Sano guy has been unbelievable.
  15. I agree about Arcia's question marks. But I don't necessarily agree about Buxton. He has put up good enough stats in AA and now AAA to warrant making the team opening day. The only question is his health, but if he is healthy then the rest is known.
  16. I don't know if that is fair assessment. I think a vast majority of people on this site would swap Robinson for Arcia and give a good chunk of Hunter's AB's to Arcia. But those people also realize that isn't going to happen. The baffling thing is why the Twins won't do that.
  17. Definitely a numbers game. It is easy to forget though that Arcia had the job and lost it. Other guys stepped up and held onto the job. That is not a bad thing. Arcia had the better part of two years without any competition. He hit righties very well, but really struggled against lefties and looked awful in the OF. The gap between him offensively is not wide, relative to Rosario 1.0 and Hicks 3.0 (if a gap even exists). Definitely in a pickle here and Hunter should be the one to go. What I fear happening is we lose Arcia for nothing. Wouldn't platooning him against righties be better than losing him for nothing? The guy has value against righties, even if it as a DH primarily. We should be able to get him some reps as a platoon. But you can't change the Twins.
  18. Since we are in wish mode, I wish we would have signed an actual good reliever or two this off-season instead of say Stauffer. Then we would not have had to move May in the first place. For those counting at home. Instead of paying $4M on a reliever, we spend $2.25M on Stauffer. That $1.75M cost us a 6.60 ERA out of the pen and when it is all said and done, about 15 starts for May.
  19. Personally, I think May is a top 3 starter in terms of talent. Unless he is remarkably better in the pen, I think he has to start for us. At 24 and 25 he had an FIP of 4.77 in his first cup of coffee last year and a 3.16 this year. He has fanned 8+ batters per 9. The guy just needs to start.
  20. Really a two part process for me. Should Buxton be on a rehab type assignment right now? I think that is a relatively easy case to make. He was out six weeks. Established veterans out six weeks would rehab, let alone a guy that has played 11 games. Should he go to AA or AAA? I would rather see him in AAA facing better pitching, even if it is a very slight difference. I think we are caught up in this demoted and released business. I am going to wait to be all ticked off until I see what happens. Guessing this is a non-issue in a few weeks.
  21. But getting back to the comment about not saying something that you would not say to their face. I would not have told Punto he was horrible to his face, nor Bill in Sales.
  22. I can get on board with the fact that maybe he wasn't ready for the AA to MLB breaking ball jump. Going back to AAA may help that transition back here.
  23. My comment was in response to those suggesting he should be on the MLB roster right now.
  24. I am guessing we are protecting Buxton more than anything, with the fear that we don't want to hurt his confidence. He struggled against breaking balls here and hasn't played in six weeks. Throwing him immediately back in there may not be a safe move. We like safe moves.
  25. A few years ago I was talking to a friend of mine when Nick Punto was here. We were talking about how bad he was and we were wondering why he was still on the team. Later that night I was on the train ride at the Mall of America with my two young girls. Nick Punto walks in with his son, about the same age as my girls and he sat next to me. Said Hi and seemed really nice and approachable. It was a pretty weird feeling having just talked about him in the manner I did. Nothing that I would consider bullying and it certainly was not to the degree you see at times, but not anything I am proud of. Just a reminder for me that he is human, seemed very nice and does the same things I do with my kids on the weekends. Not to mention, he was bigger in person that he looks on the field.
