  1. There is the issue for me. You have to balance best player available with the position. If this kid was going to hit like Bryce Harper, he would not be available at #5. We are absolutely loaded in the OF. Buxton, Arcia, Hicks, Rosario, Harrison maybe, Kepler. Option A - Take Jackson. Compare his value to the best two of the above (less Buxton), or a FA bat we can sign. They are always available. Option B - Take one of the SS. Compare there value with what we have at that position. The free agent market is usually quite thin at SS. Guys like Andrus are getting $120M these days.... Option C - Take the best arm. Compare his value to who will likely be our 5th starter. We are never going to sign an arm like that on the free agent market. My opinion is option B or C is the way to go. BPA is great, but so are the factors or supply and demand.
  2. Assuming no wide gap exists in talent, I would be very happy if we took a power arm. You can't have enough of them. I think the Twins should trade prospects for Didi and take an arm here.
  3. I am not following this. We aren't getting the 45th pick if Nunez leaves are we?
  4. I was not very clear. I meant 20 guys in all of the minors, not in the Twins system.
  5. I think the issue is, 20 guys in the minors could come up and pick it like Pedro, and hit .200. He does not have an MLB bat, plain and simple.
  6. With regard to SS, I think the Twins way is alive and well. Here is a quick list of players drafted or signed as SS, who were moved. Plouffe, Dozier, and Sano. Soon to be Polanco, Nunez, Goodrum, and Danny Santana. I think Arcia and Willingham are one off's. We want Josh to have NL trade interest and while we suspect Arcia is a DH long term, he is 22 and we stink, so let's roll him out there so we know for sure.
  7. My gut says, if an offensively minded team like the Yankees conclude he can't hack it at SS, the odds are next to zero he meets the Twins expectations. So this has to be a utility thing, I agree. I can't help but think Pedro, Bartlett, or Escobar will be cut (likely Bartlett). I don't think Terry would give up a prospect like this just to fill in as the utility guy while Bartlett is on the DL. We can argue about his upside, but he was 20 and had a 2.96 ERA with 102 K in 112 IP last year in low A, and a lefty to boot.
  8. It is always tough to predict what a team sees their needs at or where they are. They were .500 last year, so a few players in low A with promise may get it done.
  9. It is a tad early to say the Twins have a better offense. No question the Yankees have stepped back, but my nickel would be the Yankees outscore the Twins this year. I agree that Plouffe would be an upgrade for them though. But personally I want to keep this guy. He can play 3B, 1B, LF, and RF and he crushes lefties.
  10. Agreed. Should have been a no-brainer each year in July. I agree with Jorgen, we should be selling guys like KC and Pelfrey and targeting young, controllable players with upside.
  11. I am guessing we have called the D-Backs, but after hearind the demands are holding our hope that one of the AA players we have will pan out at SS. They almost always do (sarcasm). Finding a team like the D-Backs that have depth at the position is something we should have done a long time ago. We have about 15 OF prospects. We could go after one of the other 3 as well. Lot of things we could be doing outside of the re-tread (Bartlett) and AA prospect game (Pedor and Nunez).
  12. Nunez had a defensive WAR of -2.1 in just 90 games last year and he will be 27 in two months. I don't think Molitor is going to be able to even put lipstick on this one. Given what we have, I do agree Escobar should be given a shot at SS. It is still a joke that these are the options.
  13. I don't think he needs 3,000 hits to get in. I agree with the sentiment that he will be forever viewed as a catcher. With a .323 average, .400 OBP, .870 OPS, and three batting titles, unless his career is cut short in the next 1-3 years he gets in. I personally think his OPS stays in this range as he ages, as he will hit with more power sans the crouching and taking balls off his legs and arms.
  14. It will take something better than that. They have Archie Bradley who will be up shortly. He is a complete stud and will fill someone's shoes. The only position prospect in MLB's 100 is Owings, who is already there. So a guy like Harrison, or Walker, or something like that could be the basis for a nice package.
  15. Spot on. They flip the two, and instead of Gardy criticizing Pedro's bat, he criticizes Nunez's glove. They will probably be swapped for each other between AAA and the Twins a half a dozen times. News flash, Pedro's bat is why the O's cut him and Nunez glove is why the Yankees cut him.
  16. I am just frustrated. We are in year 3 of our rebuilding and apart from drafting Michael, we haven't signed a free agent, an international free agent, or traded for a single player with a realistic shot at being an MLB SS. It has been clear for awhile now Levi is not the answer. If a guy who is unemployed is too expensive (Drew), I compeltely agree Didi would be a great pickup. He was a top 100 prospect, has a career .252 career average, .329 OBP, and OPS of .693. His scouting report back in the day gave his glove a 70. He isn't going to hit for power or steal bases, but given where we are I don't know why this isn't a huge upgrade. Didi lost his job to a guy that was a supplemental pick, had an OPS of .761 in the minors, and is hitting .318 in the big's. All at 22 years old. Hard to knock him for that. The D-Backs would not be asking for Sano/Buxton/Meyer type talent and we have an extremely deep system.
  17. I love how the Twins do next to nothing to develop or sign an mlb ss.Then they take a double a cast off and promote him two levels above where he should be, then criticize him and say they need more. It is not Pedro's fault and Bartlett, Nunez, and Escobar are next in line with the same result. Look inward. Seriously.
  18. Is it me, or does it seem this team loves to swap out utility infielders and 4th OF constantly, one no better than the last? Clete Thomas, Mastro, Escobar x 2, Pressley....I bet if you went back 8 years you find at least one INF and one OF each year. In many cases two. Aside from the fact that they are human beings with emotions, families, etc.....you don't lose anything. Just kind of bizarre to me.
  19. I agree, this is a chicken and egg thing. With regard to Stewart and the comps, all those guys were drafted behind him.
  20. Barring injury concerns, I highly doubt Rodon slips to #5. The folks at ESPN want people to follow. Just look at the NFL. Guys go from top pick to out of the top 10 for no reason at all.
  21. You are missing the point. It is a rational fear to lose the DH spot. Could you imagine if your catcher gets hurt, then your backup catcher gets hurt, and Mauer comes in and he gets hurt? If anything we should call up Eric Fryer, just to be safe.
  22. While extremely unlikely, $30 to win $5,400 sounds like a reasonable risk/reward. Not an idiot at all.
  23. I agree. Pinto should catch 2/5 and DH 1/5. We don't really know until we get a few rotations. They may just be lining up pitcher-catcher combo's.
  24. Leviathan, So "all the optimism" means you thought Jokin's pitching projections and Seth's hitting projections were too high. Even though 90% of the people believe the team will be 3-5 games better, which puts them in line with where Vegas has them. I think you are generalizing way too much. I commented on Jokin's comments that he was likely 10-20 basis points high on three of the pitchers. Brock said something similar. By no means was the site as a whole overly optimistic or unreasonable on much of anything.
