  1. I agree completely. I could see MLB losing in court because the union does not repesent MILB players. So they aren't really part of the union.
  2. Just to offer up the counter argument that is probably being typed now, then to refute it.... They are "free" to go into another line of work. They could become waiters, roofers, or accountants. All three of those jobs as well as every other job is protected by a minimum wage that sets a floor at which a person must be paid. Minor leagers are paid well under this floor. At a minimum they should be paid up to this amount. Federal and state laws also stipulate employees must be compensated for travel times to and from work as well as a portion of their time traveling. So apply this to MILB players on top of the time at practice, BP, games, video, working out, etc. Their pay would go up dramatically, as it should.
  3. How about we bring up May for Kevin C. Then bring up Meyer and cut a reliever. Deduno goes about 4-5 innings per start. Why not start Meyer every fifth day and give Deduno innings 6-9. The pen gets a rest and our team gets better. I would rather see Meyer up than May, but if he can only throw 80 pitches, this seems like a good compromise.
  4. We can guess what their thought process is. All I can do is go off of what our manager has said. Santana gives us the best chance to win right now. He is hitting .380 so that is why Hicks is on the bench. That was the quote.
  5. Ricky Nolalso, Phil Hughes, Kyle Gibson, Sam Deduno are in the rotation right now. Johnson is not an upgrade over any of them. May and Meyer are way younger and much better, now and in the future. Johnson's ERA is a little better this year, over 60 IP. Johnson is 29 and had a career 4.15 ERA, 6.4 K per 9 in the minors.
  6. Hicks has played 3 full games in the last 8 days.
  7. Rebuilding - Let's let Deduno, Meyer, or May get a shot in the rotation over Kevin C., Mike Pelfrey, Darnell, Johnson, etc. Let's let Danny Santana play short stop instead of CF. Let's let Hicks figure this out versus ride the pine. Let's let Pinto get his feet wet at catcher (more than 1 or 2 x a week) Going for it - Santana in CF. Pinto at DH. Signing Kendry Morales. Bringing in veterans (matt G, Kubel, etc). I am guessing we thought they may outperform the younger options.
  8. Kris Johnson should not sniff the team. He and May are both on the 40 man, which will unfortunately be a consideration. Meyer should be the guy, here is a few that we could lose on the 40 man, take your pick: Fryer, Ibarra, Johnson, Pelfrey, Colabello/Parmalee. This should not even be part of the discussion about who to bring up
  9. I completely agree. Now watch May come up first because of the 40 man issue....or Kris Johnson first. Know where you are in your cycle and commit to it. I will never fault this team for trying to make moves to win now and for the future. Morales is not blocking anyone, let's keep moving forward and bring up Meyer.
  10. Regarding Hicks, I would agree keep him in CF 5 of 7 days or so. He is improving and as you point out, most 9 hitters don't get on base 34% of the time. Santana's BA needs to fall to .320 to have the same OBP as Hicks, so he doesn't walk at all and he is not goign to be a career .320 hitter. I would absolutely not play Hicks 1 or 2 days a week. He needs to be in AAA if that is all he sees the field, especially since he dropped LH batting. Split some reps for Santana and Escobar at SS and give Santana a few days in CF. Regarding Kris Johnson. Meyer is the guy that makes us better tomorrow, and five years from now. Johnson has a had a decent two year run here, but he is 29 and those K per 9 numbers of 6-7 per 9 don't project like Meyer. Career Minor numbers, Johsnon 4.15 ERA, 6.4 K per 9. Meyer, 3.00 ERA, 10.5 K per 9. If we are going to spent $8M mid-season for Kendry's Morales and the super 2 deadline is near, the time is now.
  11. I really like this move as a stand alone, esecially since Kendry is not blocking anyone of value. I just am confused at which direction we are going in. Are we rebuilding, are we contending? Seems kind of half and half to me
  12. The hit was legit. but when the fielder closes his eyes, looks the other way, and dives for a ball he had no chance at catching with his eyes open and it rolls past him.....let's call it a single with an error.
  13. Jeremy, have you heard definitively whether we want burdi in the pen or a a starter?
  14. By far, the best analysis of the night was on Hicks "double". They have it in slow motion. Springer closes his eyes and looks the other way while diving for the ball (flinching). Tom Kelly says "that is not a good way to go about things"
  15. Cedereth last year 51 IP, 2.28 ERA, 55 K, .205 BA against. 4.9 BB/9 Cedereth career 213 IP, 3.76 ERA, 226 K, 5.24 BB / 9 (terrible 6.42 as a freshman) Beede over three years 271 IP, 3.22 ERA, 277 K, 4.6 BB / 9
  16. I will provide two scenarios. You are 21 and about to be drafted, which is sort of exciting. Which would be a better experience and make you feel better about your future employer? A ) some had you at 21 to the Tigers, you are on the board at 43. The team at 46 reaches out to you and says they are watching you but have someone else ahead of you. At 46, they pick you and you know the draft room may be upset they got you and missed out on who they want You are sad that you fell here, but after pick 45 you receive a phone call. The Twins say they have been keeping tabs on you for five years and are really excited that you were available at 46 and they wont to welcome you to the Twins
  17. I just don't see the upside. You either pick him or you don't If you don't he knows you had someone ahead of him. If you tell him he is number two he knows the guys in the draft room are ticked they missed their guy. Welcome to the club! Thrilled to have you
  18. Interesting that we would go out of our way to communicate to the kid that we like him, just not as much as someone else. But if he goes we would love to have you. Way to make the kid feel special.
  19. Interesting. I will take a 95-96 mph heater and a 60 slider over the course of 200 IP. The upside is too large not to attempt it in my opinon. No reason he can't go back to throwing gas if it doesn't work out.
  20. Seth, do you have any idea of whether the Twins view him as a starter or reliever? My two cents. If the guy has an 80 fastball and a 60 slider. Why not throw him in Low A or rookie leauges and tell him to throw 25 change ups a game and try and start him? We have a good pen right now and the other day I looked and we have 6 relievers in Rochester with a sub 3.00 (including Tonkin, Achter, and Guerra). We have Pino and Johnson starting and both could move to the pen. While I concede that none have the upside as this guy. It would seem that this guy would have at least a 60-65 fastball as a starter. So you have a plus fastball and a plus slider, if he develops an average change up you have 200 innings of a #2 starter at least. If he ends up being a set up guy or closer, I don't view this as a wasted pick. Between 2000 and 2014, only four of our 2nd round picks have played for the Twins. Crain, Swarzak, Baker, and Slowey.
  21. Here is my two cents on the Burdi pick. I have two real thoughts. I would invest one year in making him a starter. He has an 80 fastball and a 60 slider. If he develops an average changeup and his fastball as a starter drops to a 60-65 pitch, we have a starter with two plus pitches and an average pitch. The upside there just seems too big. Second, if he ends up being our 8th inning shut down guy and a closer in 3 years, that isn't a bad thing. Here is a quick list of recent 2nd round picks: Eades, Melotakis, Chargois, Boer, Goodrum, Bullock, Ladendorf, Rams, Benson, Kelly, Slowey, Thompson, Swarzak, Baker, Crain, Tyler, Bozied. That goes back 14 years. The only guy that will retire with more WAR than a good 8 inning set up guy is probably Baker. The verdict is out on Eades but I am not very high on him. Crain and Swarzak are probably on par with a good set up guy.
  22. I read he has an 80 fastball. A 60 slider. I would absolutely have him focus on a change and try to start him. The upside here is very high as a starter. If the fastball drops velo and is a 70 pitch. 70 fb. 60 sl and an average change would be a coup here
  23. I hear Phil Niekro is an advisor. He is pushing for a knuckleballer nobody has heard of.
  24. I love the comps they give. I was just watching MLB channel. In gushing about Aiken (a very positive review), the guy said "he reminds me of Jeremy Affeldt and Randy Wolf". He even mentioned "a guy in the Giants bullpen" with the Affeldt comp. That will make the Astros fans get excited at 1-1
