  1. Jarlin Garcia: LHP - Marlins: Baseball America says: "Big arm who would be making a massive jump from low Class A Greensboro to the big leagues; Garcia has earned above-average grades for his fastball and curve. He also finished strong, with a 1.03 ERA in his final 35 innings." Give him a shot as a LOOGY in relief? Here is more from Jim Callis on Garcia: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/102323126/pipeline-perspectives-henry-ramos-jarlin-garcia-are-best-unprotected-prospects
  2. Definitely, but I think they'd want something more than Escobar for sure, possibly much more.
  3. Parker, any thoughts on Rosario's outfield defense (range, instincts, etc.)? I know he doesn't have Buxton-level D, but is he at Hicks's level? He would undoubtedly be an improvement on Willingham, Colabello, or Parmalee, but by how much? It seems to me that if his defense is well above average for corner outfield, then maybe we can live with his lack of power and OBP, at least in the short run until someone (Kepler, Walker?) with more power but still decent D is ready to replace him.
  4. Completely agree, but unfortunately that is pretty far from the way Terry Ryan views things.
  5. What about Funkhouser? And although I mostly agree with this list based on what little I know (although maybe not Rogers being 9), a lot of scouts seem to like Aiken and maybe Buehler ahead of Bickford. Overall its a good list though.
  6. 100% agree. What Twins need is upside, not a fifth 4-5 starter. The heck with Masterson. If all we are going to get is a 4.50 ERA, might as well have that spot taken by Meyer or May (or later Berrios). With Anderson, we get either a 3.25-3.50 ERA (which is worth not starting Meyer or May) or an injury (in which case Meyer or May).
  7. If Sano appears able to handle 3rd base defensively, and Plouffe is putting up similar numbers to last year, then yes, absolutely trade him for a pitching prospect. His value is unlikely to get much higher, and Escobar can handle backup at 3rd. I'd try to wait until this summer, but obviously if a good enough offer comes sooner, then take it.
  8. Completely agree with cmb0252. I'm not crazy about this potential move. I'd much rather spend this money (and more if necessary) on a #2 starter. If there are no good candidates this offseason, then lets wait until next offseason. We don't need another Arcia in left field, and believe it or not, what is keeping the Twins from being a competitive team is not another slugger. We have Arcia, Vargas, and soon Sano. What we need is pitching and outfield defense, which by all accounts Tomas lacks.
  9. I mostly agree, but the Twins are advancing in this department, despite being behind the curve, and bringing on Molitor should help a lot in this regard.
  10. I think they are playing Polanco at SS because with Santana, Escobar, and later Gordon, they see his role as a future very valuable utility player, filling in for both 2nd Base and SS, and in a pinch, 3rd base. I think it is unlikely he'll be a starting SS based on the reviews of his arm, and the fact that we have Santana, Escobar, and Gordon.
  11. I'm not doubting that it might take that much to get Atlanta to do the deal, I'm just saying it would be dumb for Minnesota to do it. Even for Meyer alone, unless we could guarantee an extension with Heyward, it would be tremendously stupid and wasteful. Even if we could guarantee an extension, I'd be against it.
  12. No, they would not be idiots to reject that deal. Even assuming you got Heyward to agree to a contract extension before the trade (not sure how that works), do the Twins really want to trade Meyer's or Berrios's three pre-arbitration years plus three arbitration years for another huge contract for five-six years? And while we do need outfield defense, we need starting pitching even more, especially after next year when outfield defense (Buxton, Rosario, maybe Kepler or Walker) is scheduled to arrive. And if Heyward can't agree to an extension, then this would be the stupidest trade ever. We are not even competing in 2015.
  13. Ok, then he definitely stays on the 40 man.
  14. But the 40 man is full of players with significantly less upside then him. Pryor, Pressly, Thompson (who?), Darnell, Fryer, Nunez, Parmalee, Colabello, Herrman. The low risk of him being selected is I guess somewhat plausible, although I don't know what other teams' rosters look like.
  15. With Kepler, people forget that he hasn't been playing baseball his entire life against the same level of competition as many western hemisphere players have, so he is definitely a candidate for a slow, late development. And 1+ years of dealing with injuries also hasn't helped in that regard. It is way too early to give up on him, especially in light of how he finished off the 2014 season and his solid AFL numbers so far. Even though he has a long way to go, I really think it would be a mistake to drop him from the 40 man.
  16. No way they give Nolasco the opening day start over Hughes.
  17. ??? I was talking about Sano in the outfield, not Plouffe. Putting Sano at 3rd and Plouffe in the outfield is another option, albeit one I (and most of the others in this thread) was not talking about.
  18. Uggh. I know Sano is decently fast and athletic FOR HIS SIZE, but come on. In all likelihood this is not going to work. Will he be worse than Colabello or Parmalee? Maybe not. But with them and Arcia we already have one of the worst two or three outfield defenses in baseball. Other than maybe starting pitching, it is the Twins biggest problem right now, and Buxton, when he arrives, will only help so much. Sure, I guess it doesn't hurt to give Sano a shot in the outfield for a few games in AA and AAA and see how he does, but I personally am very skeptical. He should continue to play mostly third base and when he is ready, even if that is not until 2016, they should trade Plouffe for pitching. Or they should trade Vargas and move Sano to First/DH. But the Twins will never be a contender with two Arcias in the outfield, and right now, that is what we should assume Sano will be.
  19. The boxscore says he just had one error, http://mlb.mlb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2014_10_08_srrwin_scowin_1&t=g_box&sid=l119 Although he had another error the night before. That is a little disconcerting. Hopefully just him getting back into actual game mode.
  20. All the scouting reports I have seen have said Tomas is an average defender at best, with some suggesting he is fringy. If we go after him it will be because of his offense, not his defense. Given the Twins' current needs, that doesn't make sense to me.
  21. I dunno. I think using the amount of cash it would cost to get Tomas (likely at least $70 million over many years) would be better spent on acquiring another # 2/3 starting pitcher or just extending Phil Hughes (I know others are not sold on this yet). The Twins do not have any standout left fielders in their farm system, but they do have 3 or 4 guys (Rosario, Hicks, Kepler, Walker) that although not fitting the traditional corner mold, could be below average power but above average defense corner outfielders (well, Walker has no power problems, but might have OBP issues). And with Arcia in right, it would be great if Buxton didn't have to worry about pulling up the slack for two other outfielders. I'm not saying we should count on all, or even one of those four to hit well enough to be a MLB corner outfielder, but I think there is a decent chance (50-60%) at least one of the four will end up hitting enough. They all have their issues, but the great thing with a deep system is that only one of the four has to turn the corner. And if they have less power, we already have Vargas, Arcia, and Sano as future mashers, with Dozier, Buxton, (and maybe Pinto) as others likely to contribute more than the average power from their position. Another option is to platoon Hicks or Walker with Rosario or Kepler. Whoever is not starting that day can be a pinch hitter/sub for Arcia in the late innings for defense.
  22. While I am glad to see the Twins considering a FA like Tomas, as they should, I don't really think he is the type of free agent we need right now. He seems pretty similar to a right-handed Arcia, or maybe what Arcia will be in another year or two. What I've read about his defense is somewhere between fringe to average at best. Even if the Twins watch him and determine he is an average defender (a big if), I'm not sure that's the best use of money now. Buxton is going to be a great defender, but he is not going to completely make up for two mediocre corner defenders.
  23. McDaniel seemed higher on Polanco and Gordon than most and lower on Meyer (thinks he'll be a reliever) than most. He didn't mention Hu at all (was that an oversight?), but he did mention Lefty Cameron Booser, who I don't think was on the Twins Daily top 50 at all. He also seems to really like Thorpe, and doesn't seems to think the risk from his elbow issue is major.
