  1. Walker's slugging is up a bit. His 2014 line: .246 .307 .436 His 2015 is : .247 .299 .551 Although generally each point of OBP is worth more than each point of slugging (thus the problem with using OPS for anything other than a rough estimate of a hitter's ability), a .008 lower OBP is still way more than made up for by a .115 higher slugging percentage. In other words Walker looks great so far.
  2. I'd be pretty disappointed with Cameron, unless quite under slot.
  3. Yeah, I saw it too, there was a definitely a change. At first it was Funkhouser, now its Bregman for the Twins.
  4. Sano had a good game at the plate tonight, going 3 for 5 (all singles), albeit with his seventh error of the year. This brings his numbers on the year to .188/.314/.400 (.714). Hopefully he can use this to build some confidence.
  5. I posted this on the BA draft topic as well, but it looks like Arizona at 1-1 is not interested in Rodgers and will most likely go with Tate, NY prep outfielder Greg Whitley, or the recently Heliumed prep catcher Tyler Stephenson on an underslot deal. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/dbacks-plans-for-the-first-overall-pick-come-into-focus/
  6. Umm, Jeremey: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/dbacks-plans-for-the-first-overall-pick-come-into-focus/ "The one exception is at #1 overall, as I’ve heard from multiple sources that the D’Backs have engaged Stephenson about a cut-rate deal as the top pick in the draft."
  7. Yeah, but we were also picking 2nd, and had a lot of extra comp picks. Here we don't even have a second rounder.
  8. Well folks, I'm sorry to say that things have not improved since I posted my last Sano update. In addition to making his 6th error last night, Sano is batting .163/.299/.388 (.687). The good news continues to be that Sano's BB rate of 15.5% is elite, and his K rate of 28.9% is only slightly above his prior minor league rates. The main culprit remains his extremely low BABIP of .167. Whatever changes Dougie tried to make to Sano's swing when he kept him out of the lineup for two straight games a week or two ago, they clearly still have not taken effect. The good news is that there is much less of a rush for Sano to arrive at the major league club, given the fantastic start of the year that Plouffe has had. That being said, it would be great if Sano had a strong May so that he could at least be ready for a call-up later this summer or fall, even if it is to share 3B with Plouffe and DH the rest.
  9. Yeah, I think they will purchase some extra space, but doubtful it would be enough to sign any of the top 20 beyond Javier, and probably will be for signing a lot of smaller $ guys.
  10. Yeah, I think McDaniel confirmed that Soto is connected to the Nationals and Martinez to the Cubs. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-international-signing-market-part-1/ I don't think the Twins are expecting to go over this year, and I'm fine with that. The year to go over is next year, 2016, anyway, since the quality is supposed to be higher than this year.
  11. I like the idea, but I think the Brewers will soon be in rebuilding mode, if they are not already. They aren't going to be targeting someone like Plouffe.
  12. Don't forget Gonsalves. Imagine a world where three of the four top Twins pitching prospects are lefties.
  13. Since he is only 17, and will be all summer, is there any chance he could still grow another inch or two? I know most guys stop growing by 17 or 18, but I think some keep growing height-wise, even later.
  14. Jeremy, have you heard anything about Demi Orimoloye? He's projected to be around the 50s to 90s, and would seem like a good Comp Round pick for the Twins at 73 or 2nd rounder at 80. Reminds me somewhat of Adam Walker the way he's described although his body looks a little more like Sano. Really loud tools, but very little polish. Tough part might be signing him. Here is video: http://m.mlb.com/video/v37009321/draft-report-demi-orimoloye-hs-outfielder
  15. I have heard all of that except for the possibility of sticking in CF. Do you have a source on that, whether personal observation or a link? Not that he would likely play there anyway, given that Buxton will hopefully be there for years to come.
  16. Do you think there is any chance they could get Allard to sign under slot at 6, or would he want and get full slot?
  17. Jeremy, maybe you have a whole new post on this very issue coming, but other than Allard, who have the Twins been tied to?
  18. Carson Cistulli also giving Hu a little love today. Helium indeed. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-fringe-five-baseballs-most-compelling-fringe-prospects-43/
  19. Earlier in the chat he was asked who was faster Dee Gordon or Billy Hamilton, and he replied that Hamilton was the fastest runner of "his generation" or something like that, mentioning Hamilton's 90-95 speed. That is what promoted this follow-up question.
  20. Seems relatively likely that with Buxton and Berrios alone, 2012 will go down as possibly the greatest Twins draft ever. Add to that names like Walker, Z. Jones, Duffy, T. Rodgers, Melotakis, Chargois, J. Fernandez (currently playing very well in Cedar Rapids), all of whom have a shot to be major league contributors, and it seems like 2012 will be the standard by which all future Twins drafts are measured.
  21. Just to put how fast Buxton is in context, check out this from today's Kiley McDaniel chat transcript: First, Kiley responded to this, seemingly un-Buxton-related question: Comment From tony Who's faster? Dee Gordon or Billy Hamilton? Is there anyone else who compares to them? Kiley McDaniel Hamilton is the fastest guy of this generation. 90 runner would describe him, but I think I've gotten game times that would be a 95 on him before. But then check out this follow-up question and answer: Comment From Colby in regards to Hamilton and the 90-95, are you saying that the scale goes to 100 or its just an extrapolation due to how fast he is? Kiley McDaniel Extrapolation. The scale is 20-80 and 80 is a number (3.9 to first for a lefty hitter, 6.3 or so in the 60 yard dash) with standard gaps for each grade, so you can obviously figure out what a 90 would be. Buxton has given me a 85-90 run time in a game too. Also, when a hitter jailbreaks (out of the box quickly due to the swing), you'll get a extra tenth or two off the run time. The Hamilton/Buxton times I'm quoting are normal full swings, because a 60 runner could give you an 80 time on the right play, but that doesn't really mean anything in the scheme of things or change his run grade.
  22. Thanks. Interesting about the breaking ball, which by all accounts is the one thing he's lacking. Does it make sense for him to work on both a curveball and slider? Does he really need both? Or he is just trying to figure out which of the two works best for him?
  23. As much as some will see this as diss/message to Aaron Hicks, I think it is mostly a result of Molitor needing a leftie outfield bat and not trusting Hicks from that side of the plate. That being said: Hicks (2015) LH v. RH: .286 .349 .464 (.813) Rosario (2015) LH v. RH: .217 .266 .367 (.632)
  24. Yup, Sano's K% is his standard fare, his BB% is actually better than his previous rates, and his ISO is only marginally below previous seasons' ISOs. HIS BABIP of .156 is mostly what is dragging him down. That could be bad luck or it could be rust leading to fewer line drives and well hit fly balls, or probably, some of both. Sano will be fine, but the fact that Plouffe is raking gives the Twins all the more reason not to rush him at this point. In fact, if we had to pick Buxton or Sano to struggle, Sano is obviously preferable given how well Plouffe is playing. Robinson is much more likely to regress significantly than Plouffe.
