  1. Yes, but it's also the biggest little city in the AAA. http://www.terragalleria.com/images/us-sw/usnv52155.jpeg
  2. Maybe a better question would be - which current or former Twins players seem likely to continue in baseball once their playing careers have ended?
  3. I was reading this article about David Price's wind-up issues, when I saw this: "MLBPA special assistant Kevin Slowey recently informed Price that umpires are evidently uncomfortable with the way the lefty sets up when in the wind-up or stretch, suggesting there might be too much deception." Apparently, Slowey's been working for the MLBPA since June of 2015. Seems like a good fit. SInce we enjoy predicting the future so much here at Twins Daily, that got me wondering what predictions you'd make for careers outside of baseball for past and present Twins players. Here's a few that seem likely or approriate to me: Justin Morneau - Consultant to Bauer or CCM. JC Romero - Runs a successful string of barber shops in Puerto Rico Joe Mauer - Makes the occasional promotional appearance for the family car dealership. Assumes Harmon's old role as Twins ambassador of good will.
  4. Kind of makes me wish I'd appreciated Mauer's peak years all the more. I was probably too busy complaining about a lack of playoff wins or something Kevin Slowey-related.
  5. The Twins gave up 889 runs last season and scored 772 for a run differential of -167 runs. Knowing the Twins will improve about 2 games for every 20 runs they trim from this figure (starting at a baseline of 65 wins at -160 runs) what's your prediction for the 2017 Twins win total and your breakdown of how they'll account for the neccessary changes to the run differential? Example: Phase Runs +/- Note Infield Defense -10 Full season of Sano at 3B Outfield Defense +20 400 more innings of Buxton & Kepler Catching +10 Castro Starting Pitching +5 same runs but more innings Relief Pitching +20 less exposed Hitting +15 Maturing hitters Net +60 -100 run differential, 71 wins RunDifferential - Estimated Wins -160 65 -140 67 -120 69 -100 71 -80 73 -60 75 -40 77 -20 79 0 81
  6. How about we just go to automated strikezones and this won't be a thing anymore?
  7. In 2014, the MLB had only 11 players that hit 30 or more HRs. This was the lowest number in a non-strike year since 1992. (In comparison, in the year 2000, 47 players clubbed 30 or more HRs). Suddenly in 2015, this number nearly doubled back up to 20 players and in 2016, it nearly doubled again to 38 players. We now have more players hitting 30 or more homeruns than in any season since 2001. This resurgence in the number of 30 HR hitters is visibile in the total number of homeruns hit, too, as the 2015 total was 700 homeruns higher thanthe year before and the 2016 total was another 700 homeruns higher than in 2015. Are the extreme strikeout rates behind the increase as hitters no longer look to make contact with 2-strikes but continue to swing for the fences? Are MLB teams now treating the homerun as their version of the 3-point shot? Have teams shifted to player decisions more heavily emphasizing HR power than other attributes? Are more and more teams preaching uppercut swings? Has the MLB once again slipped in a livlier ball in an effort to "energize" the game? Are greater pitcher velocities causing faster exit velocities? Is it all the result of bad Twins pitching? Are players using altered bats? All of the above?
  8. I believe that great fielding plays made by the hometown ballboy or ballgirl should be counted as outs at the umpire's discretion and scored U-2.
  9. For less than you'd pay for a latte at your local barista, you can now watch actual Major League Baseball at Target Field. The Twins announced they're selling a $99 Spring Ballpark Pass that allows standing room admission to every Twins home game in April and May, excluding the opener. Wow. As a consumer, I should be happy at the prospect of such a bargain, but it actually saddened me to read this. I felt like I caught a glimpse of the girl who was prom queen back in high school now hustling drinks from patrons in a bar downtown. You felt sad for her and embarrassed for her and didn't want to make eye contact. The Twins are essentially at the same place, giving it away for free hoping you'll buy a couple of drinks. This is where I want to insert the happy ending. I hope that the weather in April and May is amazing. I hope that Joe Mauer hits .300 again. I hope the Twins sell a ton of walk-up tickets and $99 Spring Ballpark passes and beers and Byron Buxton t-shirts. I'm pulling for the prom queen.
  10. The Metrodome has got to be rolling over in its grave right now.
  11. There's always the Prince Fielder vegetarian diet.
  12. O'Rourke gives double meaning to being a Twins hurler.
  13. If 2017 is to be a one-year audition for Molitor, How do you think the new FO views these managenrial traits in level of importance and how do you think they'd currently grade the current manager in each? In-game strategy Managing the Lineup and pitching staff Development of players Team chemistry Media relations
  14. I was surprised to see Dan Szymborski's team ZiPS projections for 2017 list theTwins at 2nd in the AL Central at 81-81, same as the Kansas CIty Royals and only three games back of Cleveland. Pecota had nearly the same forecast for Minnesota, also pegging them at 2nd in the division but with one less win. (Pecota thinks KC will lose 90 games!) Barring significant changes to the roster, I'm guessing this uptick is based on the progression of the young Twins talent (Berios) plus a falloff of KC, Detroit, and the White Sox in the AL Central. If forced to choose, would you take the "over" or the "under" on these optimisticTwins projections?
  15. If the other Major League teams are also going to be employing these new training techniques won't the Twins at best only be preserving their current standing relative to the rest of the clubs? (Which was last, 130 runs worse than anybody else) I would cast my vote for finding some more successful pitchers somewhere.
  16. "Fister is only two-years removed from a terrific season in Washington" see Ricky Nolasco, Kevin Correia, Vance Worley, Jason Marquis...
  17. I make myself feel better by imaging Dozier's production comes at 1B and Mauer's at 2B and that the two are each paid $16 million. It still works out the same, but everyone's a little happier.
  18. Bagwell appears likely for election this year with Raines and Hoffman possible. Clemens and Bonds may gain but still won't overcome the PED stigma with enough old school voters in the BBWAA.. Curt Schilling gets penalized for his personality. Pudge and Manny should do well the first year on the ballot but neither is elected. Vlad and Posada get enough votes to stay on the ballot for next year.

  20. Oh, c'mon people. Page 3 and no mention of this?
  21. This John Swol article on Twins Trivia provides thumbnails on a few of them.
  22. Does anybody have any rememberance on how Rafael Palmeiro won a Gold Glove in 1999 while playing only 28 games on defense and spending 128 games at DH? This seems absurd but I don't recall criticism of the award at the time.
  23. The new CBA also banned smokeless tobacco for all new players coming into the MLB - this following Tony Gwynn's death in 2014 from salivary gland cancer brought on by his years of dipping tobacco.
  24. Since the Doziers will, in all likelihood, be looking for a place to live near Dodger Stadium I ran a search on Zillow and returned the following results. Curious to see what $800,000 will buy in that neighborhood, I clicked on the link (green dot) for 1016 Figueroa Terrace. Breathe taking Views of Downtown Los Angeles Skyline. Triplex consists of two separate buildings.1016 Figueroa Terrace is a separate structure 2 bedroom 1 bath. 1020 ,1022 Figueroa Terrace is a Duplex containing a 1 bedroom 1 bath and a single. A driveway and single vehicle carport separate the two structures. This location offers immediate access to the Hollywood 101 and Pasadena 110 Freeways. Dodger Stadium is less than half a mile to the north and Staples center is 2 and a half miles south making this property perfect for basketball and baseball fans. Looks like the Doziers could live in half of it and rent the other half out if they wanted a little extra income.
