  1. I dislike both cats and dogs if only for all the lazy and unimaginative minor league teams that simply append a "Cat" or "Dog" at the end of a drab word to come up with a team name. FIsher Cats, Muckdogs, Rock Cats, River Dogs, Hillcats, Sea Dogs, River Cats, Valley Cats, Doggy Cats, etc. I conversely applaud the minor league team that puts some effort into the naming process and comes up with a unique name to grab your attention - the Gwinnett Strippers, for instance.
  2. PS - I promise my negativity will only be of the soft-nosed variety.
  3. The Mariners are 29-20 and in second place in the AL West, 3 games behind the Astros. The Twins, despite being 3 games UNDER .500 are only a game and a half out of first place in the AL Central. I call that relevant baseball. (Thank you, Cleveland!)
  4. Quick Nick Update: Since his promotion to AAA Rochester on Tuesday, Nick has carried over his hot hitting from AA, batting 3-for-8 with a pair of doubles. After entering his first Red Wings game as a defensive replacement, Gordon has started the last two (both wins) at shortstop, batting second in the lineup behind Zach Granite. 5. Last night's game between the Phillies' AAA team, the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs, and the Twins AAA team, the Rochester Red Wings, featured Trevor Plouffe at 1B for Lehigh (2-2, HR, 3 RBI) and Miguel Sano at 3B for Rochester (3-4, HR 2 RBI). Former Phillies #1 prospect Trevor May started the game for Rochester and took the loss as the Ironpigs won, 4-3. Nick Gordon, making his first AAA appearance, entered the game in the bottom of the 8th inning as a defensive substitute at SS but didn't get to bat.
  6. From Gunnarthor this morning: Gordon promoted to AAA? Red Wings via Twitter: SS Nick Gordon - son of "Flash", brother to Dee - promoted to the Wings today after hitting .333 with 18 XBH (5 HR) in 42 G at Double-A @ChattLookouts!

  8. 6 non-competitive starts out of 8. If the Twins haven't formed an opinion, there can't be too much more they need to see.
  9. I remember reading somewhere that, as a player, Quilici was a Billy Martin favorite. It may have been in the Jim Theilman book about the '65 Twins - but I'm not sure. Martin was the 3B coach on the '65 team and Quilici came up in July that year and ended up starting in the World Series when Jerry Kindall got injured. (The eventual end to Kindall's MLB career - although he went on to be a legendary college coach at Arizona) Quilici would have also played for Billy when Martin managed the team in 1969. Does anyone else recall this?
  10. First thought: outlawing beach balls in Anaheim would be a start. Second thought: Kaat's proposal, however you feel about it, at least gets people talking about the issue. Third thought: My particular pet peeve is a pitcher that doesn't want to pitch. You know the one. He just stands on the mound staring in as the catcher goes through two or three sets of signs until finally the hitter thinks "Enough of this BS" and calls time. If we ever do get automated strike zones, I would like to program them to start shrinking about ten seconds after the pitcher gets the ball back from the catcher.
  11. I get your point, Sssuperdave - but looking at the boxscore for that fanless game in 2015 shows it was atypical in that the Orioles scored 6 of their 8 runs in the 1st inning so the rest of the game ended up being fairly compact. Also only 2 total walks in the game, as you noted - so home plate umpire Jerry Layne's strike zone probably contributed to the pacing, as well.
  12. There's also the economics. A 7 inning game means fewer broadcast ads sold. (And fewer concessions) There would need to be significant increases in attendance and TV/Radio ratings to break even. If not, then it's either higher prices - which will cause sponsors to leave - of more ads between innings which defeats the purpose of the change.
  13. Thank you for getting that right, blue.
  14. Shohei Ohtani has left the building. Needs his beauty sleep for tomorrow.
  15. Free baseball! Put the runner on second and let's get started.
  16. At this rate Kyle Gibson will end the season with 4 wins in 32 starts.
  17. Good game so far. C'mon Twins bullpen!
  18. Mitch Garver and Clete Thomas -separated at birth? http://www.milb.com/images/641598/generic/180x270/641598.jpghttp://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/images/players/head_shot/460004.jpg
  19. Wow - it's hard to tell Mauer and Buxton apart running the bases. No it's not.
  20. 2 innings, 2 walks, but the Kyle Gibson no-hitter is still intact.
  21. Nice crisp 1st inning. The Kyle Gibson no-hitter is still intact.
  22. No chance of the Twins taking over first place tonight. The Indians defeated the Royals 6-2 this afternoon behind 2 home runs and 2 doubles from Francisco Lindor.
