    Even Ryan mentioned Berrios' size as one reason he wasn't up this year......probably more about stamina than effectiveness, but still.....

    Arms are probably shorter too......do either of you have evidence that the scouts who believe this are wrong? Remember, it is a rule, not a law. There will be exceptions to rules.

    Not sure if it is a self fulfilling prophecy or not, but there just aren't many shorter pitchers that are great. We can always name exceptions to the rule, but that doesn't prove much. Maybe just more elite athletes are taller to begin with? Who knows, but I think there is some selection bias here....

    Sano? teams would pay more like $75-100MM for him right now. Look at what they are paying international free agents. As for your point, it misses a point that people seem to ignore a lot. Only 25 guys are on a roster at a time. Only 8 SP pitch in many years. Only 1 at most infield positions in a year. IMO, it's not as simple as saying "you can't give up 2 WAR from these 5 people, for a guy that only gives you 5 WAR back", since those 5 might not be able to play at the same time (and might be replaceable themselves with 3 WAR guys). Generally, the analysis works, but specifically, not always.

    So, if they are going to worry about FA timing......they need to sit him for more than half the year? Oh boy, that should be fun on these boards. OTOH, Ryan has pretty much ignored that, as far as I can tell, so I'm not sure it matters.

    I have major doubts about Minier, but that probably goes all the way back to them signing him, and not one of the much higher rated guys. As always, I hope to be proven wrong when I'm skeptical. I really hope they keep Yanda in the bullpen. He seems like the exact type of guy that could move quickly and help the team and himself.

    The number 1 goal for a leadoff hitter is to get on base. Speed is over rated relative to that. Imo.

    Wait, in one thread we read that the Twins won't go over 120 million, and in this thread we read that his contract isn't holding them back from signing "anyone they want'. Which is it, do we suppose?

    Wasn't Bard hurt before being drafted also? I remember not liking this pick for that reason, but I could be remembering incorrectly. Frankly, more of these guys should move the bullpen sooner, imo. They have almost no chance to be starters, and we now know guys lose velocity a lot earlier than we thought. Lots of teams are calling up pitchers younger and younger.....

    What is interesting about the spike is that NO ONE ever accuses him (with no evidence, like with many others) of taking PEDs leading up to his contract year. People accuse others of that all the time, but not him.* *note, this "rant" is about the accusers, not Mauer.

    I can't speak for others, but I didn't mention Hicks because it seemed like piling on at the time.

    as for dismissing Hicks 35 good games (compared to how many awful games) and Plouffe's hot vs cold streaks, I don't know, one of them has actually been good over a whole season, and one has only been good for 35 games out of his career (give or take). I'd think it is reasonable to say one of these is not like the other yet.

    For all of his issues, I agree, Walker is intriguing.

    By the time you know what you have, they have little value unless they all worked out. Some of the value in these guys is upside uncertainty.
