  1. Hola amigos. It's been a while since I rapped at ya. My buddy Ron was signed up for the game thread this morning, but he texted me last night to say he would be too hung over to get it posted. I told him I'd do the deed in exchange for a cold six pack and he agreed. Anyway, it's my first spring training game thread, and coach is only giving me 40 words to get it done. So I gotta make it short and sweet. In a word, yours truly is feeling great today. I pulled a double shift last night and made some serious tippage. On the way home I swung into the Quik Pik and filled the tank on the Festiva. And check this out. I also picked up four - yes four - pizzas for the freezer. Four. Seriously, I don't remember the last time I even had two frozen pizzas in the bank. The game is even on the boob toob today. Ron just texted me to say he is stopping by with the brews at noon, at which time I will be firing up the oven to do double duty on a couple of those 'zas. Yes, the afternoon is setting up nicely for your buddy Jim Anchower.* Here are the lineups. CF Buxton 2B Dozier DH Mauer 3B Sano RF Kepler 1B Vargas SS Polanco C Castro LF Schuck Pitcher: Ervin Santan * h/t Onion Also, whoa, looks like an opening day lineup.
  2. We had the same velocity discussion about Perkins last March, FWIW My gut guess was always that they are paying Hughes lip service, and that he would begin the season on the DL. Hughes already saw his fastball velocity drop noticeably between 2014-2015. He might need to reinvent himself as a crafty righty. The BA against on 0-2 counts is alarming, either way. http://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfxo.aspx?playerid=7450&position=P&pitch=FA
  3. Semi-serious question: how do these people even look at themselves in the mirror in the morning?
  4. teh emails!!
  5. May was hitting 96 in his start last weekend. Give me the young guys with lots of life still on their arms.
  6. Playoffs? http://media.nj.com/devils_main/photo/9013775-large.jpg
  7. Terrible game today, but I refuse to panic until March, at the earliest.
  8. But what does Curt Schilling think, and can he borrow some money from you, Mr. President? He promises to pay you back.
  9. I wish we could just get the season started!
  10. From MLB Official Baseball Rules, 2016: Definition of Terms An ILLEGAL PITCH is (1) a pitch delivered to the batter when the pitcher does not have his pivot foot in contact with the pitcher’s plate; (2) a quick return pitch. An illegal pitch when runners are on base is a balk. Rule 6.02 b Illegal Pitches With Bases Unoccupied If the pitcher makes an illegal pitch with the bases unoccupied, it shall be called a ball unless the batter reaches first base on a hit, an error, a base on balls, a hit batter or otherwise. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/downloads/y2016/official_baseball_rules.pdf
  11. Well, I made my own case for why Adrianza is not the second coming of Florimon. At least I'm happy.
  12. No, I have no such source or projection. I have been comparing their past performance. Both Florimon and Adrianza are awful at the plate, though Adrianza is not as awful as Florimon, and is coming off a below average but not-at-all-awful .679 OPS, 86 wRC+ with the Giants in a small number of plate appearances in 2016. So, to say that Adrianza's "upside" on offense is Florimon; that is, if Adrianza hits as well as he can hit, it means he is hitting as well as Florimon, that is mistaken. But it's the fielding aspect I think people are not seeing. Adrianza is simply a better fielder than Florimon, which is what the Twins need most from shortstop right now, in my opinion. In 358+ innings at short from 2011-2012, Florimon's UZR/150 was -11.6, ranking him 55th out of 67 shortstops with at least 300 innings over that period. In 307 innings at short from 2013-2016, Adrianza's UZR/150 was 19.8, 3rd of 88 shortstops, behind only Simmons and Lindor. Florimon got 1,000 innings at short with the Twins in 2013 and qualifies for that same list. He ranked 20th out of 88; not bad. That was Florimon's best season. Based on what they have done and not how they project, I think it's worth giving Adrianza a shot to play shortstop full time. He can bat ninth no problem. The Twins need a steady glove over there.
  13. Why is his upside Florimon? Because someone on TwinsDaily said so, and it had a nice ring to it?
  14. No doubt, Adrianza is not some Orlando Arcia-type shortstop prospect, but I disagree Adrianza is a desperation move. I'd be fine if he was our shortstop. In fact I'd give him slight odds over Escobar.
  15. At first this made sense to me (still does) but now I don't necessarily agree. Two things: 1. Adrianza was waived around the time Dozier talks broke off; the Twins might have had various people in various places unable to agree on Adrianza; so, while saying the "Twins passed on him" is accurate, it also conjures the idea that everyone in the org felt he was a stinker the first time, then collectively said "what the heck why not" about Adrianza the second time, which is doubtful. Which is all an incomplete and long-winded way of saying there were a lot of moving parts when the Twins passed on him the first time. 2. The Twins were under different leadership two years ago.
  16. Pace of play! Manfred has fixed baseball!
  17. The other out was a groundout to Sano. It can only go downhill from here.
  18. What have you done for me lately?
  19. Even by your understanding of what the tools are, it's still my opinion Sano has them. One other quick nitpick: I'm not expecting Sano to be great in the field.
  20. Tools for position players are generally: hit for average, hit for power, fielding, arm strength, and speed From what we've seen, anybody would be justified in being concerned about Sano's fielding. Otherwise, the other tools are there. Which is not to say he doesn't have flaws. He does.
  21. Let's hope Sano's health holds out. So far, so good, right? By the way, it was June 14, 2014 when Plouffe got injured diving for a ball.
  22. This is interesting.
