  1. In two more years, I think Berrios might be as good as just about any of those free agents! However the rest of the Twins 2019 rotation figures to be a complete unknown at this time. I am still a David Price fan and maybe he will accept a smaller contract at that time to play for a smaller market than Boston. When the All Star game was in Minneapolis, Price spent his All Star break just bumming around the Twin Cities prior to his team playing the series at Target Field after the break. Maybe the quality of life here could appeal to him (hey, wouldn't hurt to ask).
  2. Sure, but if the client is interested in dragging this out until January, there's no point in going hard at him in November.
  3. I was posting this on another thread but will post it here. By the way, welcome! I saw in the other thread how you want to blog and you would have a lot to contribute with your background. Anyway, I am very much a proponent of a trade (for a starter) rather than signing Darvish. I have been doing some digging for a blog post I wanted to do myself, about trading our prospect(s). The long and short is I think prospects -- any prospects below the top Mauer/Harper/Trout/Bryant/Buxton/Alex Gordon no. 1 or 2 level -- they are overrated, not to say bad players, just too much projecting of greatness that doesn't materialize. I have always felt this and now even more so. I think Nick Gordon will develop into a regular player with a couple good seasons here and there, but I think trading him for two years of Cole would be a good gamble to take. the Moneyball strategy of trading a good prospect is that you do not have a declining Darvish on the books for $20 million a season when it comes time to extend Buxton and Berrios. There is a load of talent in the AL coming up right behind the Twins (Boston, Houston, White Sox) and the Twins window with this core might be now, not three years from now. I am ok with the cheap signings they have made thus far if it is backed up by a trade for an established starter. There's my long winded response, which blogs are good for.
  4. but, I think they are seriously pursuing him. Or, maybe they think they are seriously pursuing him. Where we agree is I don't think Darvish is their best option, dollar for dollar.
  5. Been pretty quiet with the Darvish rumors. Maybe Darvish is deciding on which salad dressing to try at his next front office dinner meeting? Or has he even decided which team's front office to meet with next?
  6. Interesting data. Half serious question -- will Castro put down a sign for delivery slot, as well as pitch type?
  7. Zach Duke. I don't see the upgrade over anyone currently fighting for a spot but I hope he works out. I assume they will keep it stretched to an 8-man bullpen again, which I have as: Rodney Duke Kinley Rogers Hildenberger probably Busenitz +2 more, out of Moya, Pressly, Duffey, Hughes, Mejia (might start, though that is shaky). That leaves 3 starting spots in the rotation to fill, 2 if you give Gibson a spot (likely).
  8. How often did the Twins put Adrianza in the outfield, Gimenez at first, or go without an extra pinch hitter or pinch runner last year, because Haley was taking a Rule 5 roster spot and only pitching in a handful of games? Asking for a friend.
  9. Thanks for the clarification. I am leaning towards "not interested" in Darvish, especially if he wants to drag this negotiation out through mid-January. Sounds like Gerrit Cole could be acquired for less, and sooner, and Berrios might be better than Darvish after a couple more years anyway.
  10. Either that, or they feel they are out completely. (which imho could be a blessing)
  11. The earliest rumor from an independent Pittsburgh guy was Gordon, Granite and Jay for Cole. That trade sounds like a win-win for both teams and bridges the Twins until Berrios matures and Falvey's own draft selections begin to bear fruit. I might even sweeten the deal by offering a AA starter instead of Jay and ask for an arm in return. If Darvish plans to hold out for $200 million until mid January (no idea what his intentions are), then I think the Twins need to move on Cole and make a deal.
  12. LENIII says the Twins know that if they want to sign Darvish, they will need to offer him the biggest contract in team history. ("Club record offer" is how he describes it.) Does he mean in terms of total dollars? Mauer signed for 8/184 in 2010. Early estimates for Darvish were around 6/140, but if Darvish is demanding close to $200 million, at that price we gotta let him go somewhere else and not let the door hit him on the way out, right?
  13. Adams is better than any minor league arm in our system, but I would comfortably offer an AA arm instead of Jay, if that's what it took. I wonder if the Twins have made an offer to Pittsburgh already and if Pittsburgh is just trying to force the Yankees buckle and give up Torres.
  14. I'm a little surprised and disappointed that Falvey and Levine still think this team needs motivation and leadership to come from outside the organization.
  15. MLBTR: 8:24pm: FanRag’s Jon Heyman tweets that the primary sticking point in talks has been that the Yankees want to headline a package for Cole with Frazier, while the Pirates want Torres to be the headliner
  16. Something about the shine of a prospect who's already been traded once. Do you think Pittsburgh is interested in Frazier? No way to know, really.
  17. also per Rule 8 here are the conditions for completing or intercepting a pass: a. secures control of the ball in his hands or arms prior to the ball touching the ground; and b. touches the ground inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands; and c. maintains control of the ball after (a) and (b have been fulfilled, until he has the ball long enough to clearly become a runner. A player has the ball long enough to become a runner when, after his second foot is on the ground, he is capable of avoiding or warding off impending contact of an opponent, tucking the ball away, turning up field, or taking additional steps. With the Jesse James play, the pass was completed (paragraphs a. and b.) when James caught the pass and his knee went down, and then he became a runner (paragraph c.) when he tucked the ball away after making the catch (if you notice, he does tuck the ball away for a split second before lunging for the goal line), and then when he turned up field (lunged for the touchdown). There's nothing in the rule about "surviving the ground" or completing the process of a catch or whatever. That's just the NFL, officials, and media commentators making stuff up. Like I said, I have no idea how it got to this point.
  18. Nothing special about Pineda; just give us whichever broken armed guy is left over
  19. I think the Twins will move on from Darvish if he's not going to sign for another four weeks.
  20. Interesting thought. Show me that rule.
  21. Well, that's a little different. I think the Twins still have the advantage. (though would still prefer a trade for a guy like Cole than tie up 100MM for the next half decade)
  22. So.... Cubs exploring free agent market? Heyman for the win!
  23. If that exact play happens in the third quarter, and the receiver is lunging for a first down, Pittsburgh gets the first down and there's no fuss. If that exact play happens in the third quarter, and the receiver is lunging for a first down, Pittsburgh gets the first down, and if New England challenges, New England probably loses the challenge. I have no idea how this got so corrupted. Only one of many things that is ruining the game of pro football.
  24. I disagree completely. I think it's quite clearly the opposite. How has it gotten so corrupted? no idea. But, go back and parse the rule, and tell me what you think.
  25. From NYY's point of view, and it's all guesswork here, but I think Torres would be too much to give up for a Cole trade. However, a request for Torres might hopefully be Pittsburgh signaling their interest in a middle infielder over corner outfielder, which leads us back to Gordon.
