  1. Nice game writeup! Greg Maddux probably couldn't toss a bean bag without it spinning or darting in some unpredictable direction. He was appointment t.v. in those years, you were not the only one.
  2. Looks ok from here though I still would like to see Mauer in the lower half. But, this is the first time I've seen Hunter's name in a hypothetical lineup, and it kind of depresses me. I guess I always thought 40 is kind of old for a baseball team trying to rebuild and get younger. Or, I imagine Terry Ryan stroking his chin and thinking "I really wish we had a 'veteran presence' hitting at the top of the order."
  3. Let me apply the "eye test" to this, and then get back to you.
  4. That gif is brutal. I don't think Hunter is loafing but it does show he has a very slow read. His best defense is that they had a 7 run lead in the 8th inning and he was playing it safe. Because you don't want a pop fly to get past you and roll to the wall, or something
  5. Yeah I'd bet there some noise in Torii's fielding stats. An all star outfielder wouldn't completely forget how to play outfield overnight, would he? I'd guess he just lost some range and maybe arm? The only play that stands out to me is his 2013 ALCS play crashing into the bullpen. I wasn't in favor of it but if you squint real hard this signing starts to make sense. Torii has charisma. Is in shape. Is a walking advertisement for how to earn $100 million which I'm sure could get the attention of many of the talented young guys making minimum. Agree this is a little different than the guys we signed last year. If Torii can bring yet one more slightly different voice to this thing, and maybe even *gasp* makes some plays in the outfield and lead by example--and continues to hit--then the signing should work out. And as a few guys mentioned on the other thread. The public is going to love this move. But I sure hope there's a trade brewing because I don't want to see guys like Pinto/Arcia/Vargas not getting their bats. And I like Arcia, would hate to see him go, and maybe left field will work better for him than right field has.
  6. I am going to agree with you, but I think baseball is more of a family/fraternity type of job (nor am I going to look it up like h2o) where in baseball you don't see coaches constantly coming and going. Football would be a completely different matter, shorter seasons, stronger personalities, higher stress, more specialization, more turnover, more money, etc. Where a Denny Green football coaching tree looks pretty damn impressive, if you ask me.
  7. It's extremely, extremely rare to convert a position player to pitcher, or vise versa, by the time a player reaches the MLB level. (Rick Ankiel is the only one who comes to mind.) I think Hicksie will get one more audition for a 25-roster spot. His winter league results do not bode well for him, however.
  8. Broadly speaking, that is true. Pitchers need to work ahead and hitters need to work a good count. (In Mauer's case, a good count is sometimes 0-2). But on the individual level the broad stroke philosophy starts to break down. Alex Meyer, for example. If the Twins plan to keep him in AAA until he can pinpoint all his pitches, then I might call that an organizational failure (based on what I've read about him from others). The new coaches get the benefit of the doubt since obviously it's not a job any of us could do.
  9. The reporters also might have cherry-picked that quotation for effect, and if they did, I sure stepped in it. But, the Twins pitching philosophy has been "attack the strike zone" meanwhile, the hitting philosophy has been "make 'em throw strikes." By now I hope the Twins can see the dissonance in those philosophies and are making some fundamental changes.
  10. I'm on board with this take. Time will tell. The Twins obsession with "pitch to contact" is just kind of a head scratcher though. As long as we're not turning May and Meyer and other strikeout guys into something they are not, we should be fine. The base hits on 0-2 counts get a little irritating!
  11. when you say "most everyone" I think you are saying that the Twins will pursue JM but that other teams will pursue him harder. To some degree I think the Twins (or at least Ryan) are invested in letting May, Meyer & Milone compete for the final two rotation spots. If it's just those three (possibly Pelf is a fourth -- *groan*) then I would be happy seeing how that plays out, without Masterson in the mix.
  12. To me, Masterson looks like a slightly above mediocre, pitch to contact guy, with horrible numbers against Detroit and KC, and who is heading towards the wrong side of age 30. Oh-- and whose best pitch is a sinkerball that breaks upward. /trolling I spent all summer complaining about Meyer and May not getting their chance, so I'm already locked in to my position. I think we have at least six guys competing for rotation spots already. But if the Twins pick him up, I'll get on board. I do grant that he has a nice pitch and some nice numbers against righties.
  13. Maybe not the most intuitive chart -- where the x and y axis cross, it looks like it's indicating the middle of the strike zone (with the bottom of the chart maybe representing the ground).
  14. I will let you interpret the defensive ratings, though playing LF last year we Schafer get to fly balls that no one had gotten to in years. Though I admit I did not see every game he played in. At the minimum I am pulling for Schafer to win a 4th outfielder role and regular late inning pinch runner and defensive replacement (Arcia).
  15. Jacque Jones had a good glove, otherwise after almost a decade of Kubel, Delmon and Willingham, I'm happy to give Schafer a shot out in left, provided he can get on base enough. I think the fielding needs to be considered in this case.
  16. People keep citing articles written by under-40, out of market, sportswriters to back their belief that no one should question Mauer's toughness. I sort of wish Mauer had been not mentioned in the original article. Other guys had more interesting injuries we could rehash: Pelfrey, Nolasco, Nunez, Colabello, Arcia, and so on. /highhorse
  17. It's hard to keep a thread about Escobar on topic, without also talking about Santana. (Minor factual point: Escobar actually got a shot playing CF before Santana did.) I want Escobar to get another shot at SS in spring training. If the Twins commit to Santana at short, that's fine with me too. Some say that Polanco and Gordon can be future shortstops, so if Santana is needed in CF then we already know Escobar can play SS for an extended period. I like Escobar a lot. He has positive value for this team either as full time or utility.
  18. will you now please usher him out of it?
  19. Just a hobby of his. Something he does in his spare time.
  20. You got me - that one went 449 feet to left center. My point is I want to be surprised by some of the new coaches, as in a couple guys from Latin America or guys I've never heard of.
  21. A coaching staff with Bruno, Steiny, and Frankie V. would remind me a lot of a Kubel, Bartlett, Guerrier reunion.
  22. Yes-I'm just as curious about the makeup of the staff.
  23. Will the Rays be "frowned at" for announcing this on a World Series game day?
