  1. I think anyway you keep Meyers in the majors is a positive step. He'll start the season being 25 year old, more time in AAA isn't going to prove anything, He needs to show something in the majors so the team can start planning a direction with their pitching staff.
  2. The comparison to the Wild is interesting, but Minnesota in hockey would be like California in baseball. Players have connection here and want to play with the Wild. They accept below market contract to come here. That's not the case with the Twins, so believing they can become a contender by going out and signing free agent is not realistic. When the Twins have won, it was with players developed in their system and adding talent afterwards. They will never be able to compete with NY or LA on overall payroll, so the best they can do is adding mid level free agent talent. Do you really believe a top level player would sign with Minnesota for a couple million more? Hughes didn't even pitch 1/3 inning for $500k. At a point, money isn't the final factor. The Twins are not a playoff team and not a top market to attract free agent. Until they can offer something to top talent, they are not going to be able to sign top talent.
  3. $7.5 million per WAR - so according to Fangraph the Twins overall WAR is 17.9 which makes our 90 loss club a $134 million roster. From what I saw, something is very wrong in this calculation. It's time to concentrate on building for the long term instead of just signing players. We wasted money on Morales because Ryan thought we could contend. Ryan missed on that one - those AB's would have been better used to develop Pinto. The biggest problem with these 4 years of losing, is we have not begun to build a young base of players. Bring up young players, will mean a lower payroll but it's the right thing to do. It's not what anyone wants after building a new stadium, but they have screwed up and it's time to admit it and start rebuilding. If they keep signing marginal players to fill up the roster, we are looking at a 10 year rebuilding plan.
  4. The Twins have not begun to see what their top prospects can do. Seems a little early to trade top prospects for a position player. We scored run this year so that was not the problem. This sounds like "I just want them to do something" and spending money just to spend without improving the team. How does this make the Twins better than Miami was last year? Why would he sign a long term contract with a losing team? Doubt this was his dream
  5. Detroit did okay with Cabrera at 3rd before having to move him to first. Why not keep Sano at 3rd and move Plouffe for an actual outfielder. We do not have to just keep the same roster. Then Sano can move to 1st when Mauer is done. We have to many players at the same position so time to change the roster mix.
  6. The Twins are not just one players away from contending. No reason to trade a bunch of top prospects for an all star player at this point. They need to bring up some players and see what they have, Sano maybe just a young Stanton. With Stanton, we'll be no better than Miami is with Stanton. Probably worst, since Miami has better young pitching.
  7. Wish my boss agreed, but I don't have a guaranteed contract. Too bad for the Twins and fans if that is the case.
  8. Isn't cloning the best player from a 4 time 90 loss team like cloning the best athlete at Fat Camp?
  9. Danny Santana was brought up at the same age as Hicks and Santana never had great years in the minors. Age isn't the question, talent and attitude is more important . You sometimes need to put players in situations where they can grow. The Twins are no longer in a position where they can keep telling people to wait.
  10. I agree with Seth also, this has to be the year we start seeing the rebuilding with prospects, not left over major league talent. I also think that we need to go that route with the pitching. Hughes was a big hit, but no top pitcher is going to sign with a 4 time 90 loss team. We'll have misses as we bring up the young players, but we might also get the big surprise. Once you can show some positive in the team play, you will be able to get the top FA's next year.
  11. What's better marketing - Buxon, Sano, Meyer & possible Berrios or Ervin Santana, Brandon McCarthy and the hard hitting .230 available outfielders of Peter Bourjos and Colby Ramus? I keep hearing we have the #1 minor league organization, but we don't have any major league talent? What was Danny Santana ranking last year? If we had signed any kind of capable backup center fielder, he never would have gotten 400 AB's, probably wouldn't have seen a call up until September if he was lucky. Is a 23 year old Eddie Rosario in the same place as Santana? If we could sign Yasmanny Tomas, I'm all in, but it not going to happen. At a certain point, it's not about money (ask Phil Hughes), it's about winning. So until we can start to show signs of life, no big time free agent is going to sign here. So do you want more of Pelfrey, Corriea and Nolasco? It time to start building something and giving it a chance to develop in the major.
  12. The Twins are not close to a playoff team, so spending money to appease the fan base and block prospects is a really bad decision. They will never compete as a high payroll team, so they need to develop talent and fill spots for veterans. But because they are so slow in bringing up pitchers, it impossible to see if the prospects are for real. Payroll should take a step backward so prospects have a chance to develop. Once you make a good base of prospect, then you can make a big move in the FA market and lockup your young talent.
  13. Baseball is killing itself with the way batters approach to hitting has changed. Taking strikes, trying to run up the pitch count and falling behind in the count. A strike out isn't just another out, it's an out 100% of the time, while a ball in play is a hit 30% of the time. Good to see Morneau figured this out and had a career low in strike out percentage and won a Batting Title. Strike outs are going up and walks are going down, I think pitchers have figured it out. It you are giving them strikes, they will take them. What's the benefit of getting to the bullpen, bullpen's have better stat's than starting pitchers. Team set there lineup based on the starter, not the bullpen. Being more aggressive at the plate will speed up the game and make it more enjoyable to watch.
  14. The Twins need to stop trying to quick fix the staff and give the young player a chance. We have 4th oldest pitching staff in the AL. We keep acting like we a just a couple players away from contending, only probable is Trout and Kershaw are not available. Four 90 loss season and the only rebuilding is done by accident. If they hadn't screw up the CF position so badly, we never would have seen Santana get 400 AB's. Time to let the young players play and then see what you need. There are no quick fixes to the mess they have created.
  15. To quote the great Earl Weaver " We gave him more chances than my first wife" Silly comment by KO.
  16. Man - talk about wanting to get this nightmare over, he would rather pass on half million rather than pitching 1/3 inning. I've been to Detroit, it's not that bad.
  17. If Gardy doesn't use him for an out this weekend it's just part of the continue combination of stupidity and stubbornness of this coaching staff. How does the manager look you in the eyes and says - "I just don't see how I can get you that 1/3 of an inning for your bonus." It's just got to make you want to give that extra effort for this coaching staff.
  18. I can't see any reason why a top starter would sign with the Twins. Why sign with a team that has lost 90 games 4 years in a row? KC found that out and had to overpay for a pitcher in a trade. Last year, the Twins said they offered contract to Santana and Garza but were turned down. Lester going to get $20 million from a playoff contender, how much would the Twins need to offer. I hope they finally commit to a youth movement and see what the young pitchers can do. We traded two NL top 10 batting averages players for Mays and Meyers, isn't time to see what they can do?
  19. I agree no one should cry over the move - it's just would make more sense if they had: 1 - dropped the worst or most expense long relief pitcher or 2 - brought up a young pitcher and began a youth movement in the staff. I think some of our pitchers will get AARP calls before getting a call to the majors or 3 - we didn't have to see nightly example of resent mistakes - Worley was another one we probably were not crying about when we gave him away or watching Liam Hendrick shut down the Twins offense or watching Mays get lite up while Revere battles for the NL batting crown. The list seems to be getting longer.
  20. Another strange move by the front office - Deduno was actually better in relief than Swarzak and cost less. We had open roster positions on the 40 man roster and rosters expanding tomorrow so no need to make the move. Just like there was no reason to ship Worley away once he cleared waivers. Hopefully this works out as well for Deduno.
  21. Great analysis - one of the most important aspect of Moneyball was making sure you had three (Zito, Hudson and Mulder) Cy Young contender in your starting rotation. In 2003, Oakland dropped from 7th in OBP to 21st and still won 96 games.
  22. Some people see the hitter with a .360 average with bases empty last year and some people see the .240 hitter with RISP with 2 times the strike out ratio. The RISP and strike out ratio continue this year, so it hard to justify it as just a slump. It's two sides of a coin, but you have look at both sides. And when you are the most important hitter in the lineup, people are going to hold you to a higher standard.
  23. I think people's position about Mauer get locked in and they have a hard time looking at the player he is today. He was a great player his first 5 years, with 3 battling titles and an MVP. Expectation were set on those standards and he was rewarded with a $23 million per year contract. But he has not been the same player he was prior to the contract. He was a good player who was injury prone, but not a great player. HIs lifetime average on RISP is ,320, but in 2011 he hit .239 and is hitting .230 this year. You can look at him either by his career average or what you see today. He appears like a player on the decline and we just need to accept realize that.
  24. The stat that takes his WAR times a dollar amount to come up with his value is really a poor stat. The WAR rankings value catcher more than any other position so if you use an average salary rate, you really overprice the salary of catchers. For example, in 2013 the total WAR for first base was 52.8 and the total for catchers was 77.1. If you use an average salary rate, catchers would be paid 46% more than first baseman. But in reality, it's just the opposite.
  25. Sensitive Mauer crowd - he not above having some fun with in an article
