  2. This is from Jeremy in the draft thread: Cody had something come up in his physical. So he's currently back in class in Kentucky (from what I understand). From what I can tell, both sides would like to come to an agreement, but I would have a hard time believing he would get anywhere near $800K. If he doesn't get signed, the Twins will get pick #74 in next year's draft. Cody had something come up in his physical. So he's currently back in class in Kentucky (from what I understand). From what I can tell, both sides would like to come to an agreement, but I would have a hard time believing he would get anywhere near $800K. If he doesn't get signed, the Twins will get pick #74 in next year's draft. I feel like that is the hope. It sounds like there is an offer out to Cody and he'll spend the weekend mulling it over. Purely speculative, but I'm guessing it's between $400-500K. If he takes it - and it's not like he's guaranteed to get more next year - that would leave the Twins around $500K to spend. They could offer two guys $350K each. Gut feel says those guys are Wilson and Engelmann.
  3. I realize it would be mostly a guess, but what would be your best guess percentage wise that we could sign either of those guys for that amount?
  4. I think we are talking about different things. I never mentioned strikeouts in my post nor in my original post which this is expounding on.
  5. I can't tell if you are serious. AL league average (without the Twins) is 28% internally developed of the entire bullpen. The Twins currently sit at 43%, ergo above league average. Again I am not arguing anything about the types of players they are signing or developing only your original statement that we are falling behind the league by not developing our own bullpen internally.
  6. Again. So maybe we can gripe about which players they are signing, but I don't think it's fair to complain the game has evolved past the Twins for not developing their own bullpen when they are comparable to the entire AL.
  7. Clearly... you didn't read my post above.
  8. I get it, but that is remarkably similar to everyone else's list also.
  9. I think the notion that other teams develop their own talent and the Twins are they only team that can't is overplayed for all pitchers, but certainly relief pitching as well. Here is the AL with the amount of bullpen that was developed internally either draft or international signings. NYY 4/7 - Bal 2/7 - TB 1/7 - Tor 4/8 - Bos 2/8 KC 4/7 - Min 3/7 - Det 3/7 - Cle 2/8 - CWS 1/8 Hou 0/7 - LAA 1/7 - Tex 2/8 - Sea 3/7 - Oak 0/7 So maybe we can gripe about which players they are signing, but I don't think it's fair to complain the game has evolved past the Twins for not developing their own bullpen when they are comparable to the entire AL.
  10. As someone who is pro-life and a Christian, I think the answer is simple. The church is failing. I believe it not to be the responsibility of the government to take care of these people, but the church and people inside the church, more specifically. Pro-life is my passion. I don't really mean the walks for life or trying to get out awareness, but the actual organizations that reach out to single mothers and care for the orphans. If the church did a better job in taking care of the widows, the single mothers, and the orphans the need for government assistance would be substantially less. My favorite charity in Kansas City (where I live) is The Lighthouse. It takes in mothers who otherwise may have felt it necessary to have an abortion and gives them a place to live for a while with a nursery for their baby when it comes. They provide a store with donated, deeply discounted goods that they can earn credits used to purchase things by attending classes that are career, counseling, and spiritual related. These type of charities pump me up and get me re-energized, but I fear we, as a church, do not fund them properly be it through donations of time or money. It's easy in any facet of life to take a stance or rather say you stand for something, but when push comes to shove, we oftentimes fail to act to solve the problem and unfortunately the church/people in the church are not immune to this.
  11. When your 8 hitter is batting 1.000 it's hard to complain too much.
  12. You called it. http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/prospect-hot-sheet-june-19/
  13. DH low for the twins? They walk Suzuki to face the DH. Edit: I guess not technically our DH today.
  14. Looks like we will not be signing Eastman, though not terribly surprising. http://www.yourcentralvalley.com/story-sports/d/story/eastman-not-turning-pro/42589/fuulzH_H8ESPPfa_RV5iVg
  15. Is it possible we could get some of you guys who are more familiar with the draft to post your predictions on who we will sign? I know it may be a crapshoot, but was just curious to see some predictions.
  16. Here is your research... Bal is the only team at 11. Teams at 13 include; KC, Hou, Min, NYM, Miami, St.L, ChC, Cin & Arizona. Not sure what the takeaway here is or if there even is one. However, it is interesting that 2/3rds of the teams at 13 are in the NL, including the only NL team we visit in the next 15 days. So I don't think the pinch hitting situation will put us in that much of a bind. I'm more concerned about the options to pinch hit, of course I guess Vargas/Mauer will be available.
  17. Here is a really good article I found on A.J. Seems like an easy family to like even though his dad played for the White Sox. http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/86696618/aj-murray-cape-cod-league-baseball-chatham-georgia-tech
  18. Looks like Murray made 15 starts at catcher, 11 in the outfield and 29 at designated hitter this year according to GT website.
  19. I agree with you that some teams have been better at this over an extended period of time and it isn't just the bigger market teams. I am not sure birdwatcher would disagree with that either, I took it as him speaking more to this specific instance. But, just to compare teams over the last 10 years by 90+ losses. 7 - KC, Pitt 6 - Bal 5 - Sea 4 - ChC, Hou, Miami, Minn, Wash 3 - Arizona, Cle, Col, TB 2 - Bos, CWS, SD, SF 1 - Atl, Cin, Det, LAD, NYM, Tex 0 - Mil, Phil, LAA, Oak, NYY, StL, Tor I was surprised by the lack of losing seasons from Mil & Cin.
  20. I was just curious to see how this compared to the rest of the league so I did a little bit of research. For the first part I just included guys they drafted in the rotation, as you said. I only looked up the AL. NYY - 1 TB - 0 Toronto - 2 Bos - 1 Bal - 1 KC - 1 Det - 0 Cle - 0 CWS - 1 Min - 1 Hou - 2 Tex - 3 LAA - 2 Sea - 1 Oak - 1 Without Minnesota that averages out to 1.14 starting pitchers per team that were drafted. I expanded it to include international free agents signed by the original team, while not everyone has the same opportunity like a draft I still ran it that way also. NYY - 2 TB - 1 Tor - 2 Bos - 1 Bal - 2 KC - 2 Det - 0 Cle - 1 CWS - 1 Min - 1 Hou - 2 Tex - 3 LAA - 2 Sea - 3 Oak -1 Without Minnesota that averages out to 1.64 starting pitchers acquired either via the draft or international free agency. Skepticism may be warranted, but I don't think you can point to the idea that somehow they are much less effective at developing their own picks as starters than other teams. Edit: Sorry for the spacing issues. It looks normal on my screen, but doesn't format right after I post.
  21. I honestly don't know if The Atlantic is a left or right leaning source, but I found this particular article helpful in trying to understand exactly your question. http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/06/america-win-loss-iraq-afghanistan/394559/ For the record I went through this thread, I typically stick to the baseball, mostly because I'm not from Minnesota and I know my opinion and feelings on politics would not be popular here, but I did want to participate in this thread. I served in the Marines and have apart from the Marines, traveled to Malaysia for an eco-tourism trip, so I have seen two very different forms of Islam. I forged many friendships in my time in Malaysia and they were so loving and accepting it really gives you hope and a passion for Islamic people that I am not sure I really believed I could have had. People would just let you stay in their house and offer you the very best of what they had, even if it wasn't much. It was really the type of behavior that restores any hope you may have lost in humanity. At the same time the ISIS group makes you question everything you think you knew about Islamic people. I really believe (forgive me for not remembering who brought up this point earlier) the key is to have Islam attack this from the inside, I am not sure where/how/if it will start, but I do think it will be necessary. I find it helpful to put it in this context. I identify as a Christian (specifically Southern Baptist), but that in no way aligns me with the Westboro Baptist Church. I feel like the best way for me to combat as being the same as Westboro, is to speak out and probably more importantly my actions. Obviously there are differences, (as far as I know Westboro is not actively trying to kill anyone, but I think the parallels are still similar. Thank you for starting this thread and giving me a spot to place my thoughts, however misguided they may be.
  22. Just a quick search of HOF'ers who were by your standards not great. John Smoltz (Missed entire 2000 season) @ End of July 2001 - 30 IP, 35 H, 4 HR, 23 K, ERA 4.8 Pedro Martinez (Missed month of July and all but one start in August of 2001) Next 10 starts - 51.2 IP, 42 H, 3 HR, 55K, ERA 3.55 Frank Thomas (Missed all of 2001 except for April) @ End of April 2002 with 26 games played - 96 AB, 26 H, 4 HR, 19 SO, .271 BA, .371 OBP, .479 SLG, .850 OPS (Career .301 BA, .419 OBP, .555 SLG, .974 OPS) Ken Griffey JR (Missed June-1/2 August of 1995) @ End of 31 games of returning - 108 AB, 24 H, 5 HR, 25 BB, 31 SO, .222 BA, .366 OBP, .370 SLG, .736 OPS (Career .284 BA, .370 OBP, .538 SLG, .907 OPS)
  23. Also interesting that he has Sano ETA at 2015 along with Buxton and Rosario.
  24. Dodgers Unlikely To Pursue Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com I wonder if this makes it any more likely that we can sneak in there with a bid.
