  1. wasnt Hunter supposed to be the great Mike Trout mentor?
  2. i wouldn't use the word "trust". Gather all of the evidence, if it all of the metrics point to the same conclusion, I feel that you can reasonably conclude at least directionally the same. Eye test is important too, metrics can't tell the whole story.
  3. agreed that we all knew this based on Nick and Parker's analysis, but to me the point is the observation coming from a slightly more objective perspective. We all care about this team, but it speaks a bit louder when someone who doesn't care about this teams says "wow! How did they manage to get worse?" What worries me is we've pinned all of our outfield improvement to one prospect. Last I saw there were three outfield positions, all of which manned by poor to terrible fielders. 2013 looked like all the rotation improvement hopes were pinned to Meyer and May, but since then, free agent acquisitions made the arrival of those two more incremental than ALL of the improvement. I was hoping to see a similar type of improvement in CF or a corner OF.
  4. Stauffer in the rotation? Ick
  5. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-twins-may-have-weakened-a-weakness/ I found this article very well written, and from a guy who doesn't appear to care about the Twins, but has done some good analysis on the impact of the Twins off season improvements. Not exactly encouraging, and he doesn't even touch the CF situation.
  6. With Eric Fryer outrighted to AAA, there are only 2 catchers on the 40 man roster. Presumably this means Ryan and Molitor plan a larger catching role for Pinto in 2015. What might the plan be for the third catcher on the 40 man?
  7. Fryer and Parmelee were both to AAA http://fantasynews.cbssports.com/fantasybaseball/update/24913940/twins-outright-eric-fryer-chris-parmelee-to-triple-a So to start with the bench should be Pinto, Escobar, Nunez and Schaefer.
  8. only LNP is 37 years old and can't gain enough momentum between home and first, to actually slide all the way to the bag. He's not the Nick Punto we all remember. To echo others. I like Nunez as a bench player. He hits well for a bench player and actually pinch hits well. He's got some pinch running speed, and his fielding is not horrible for a hit-first bench guy. I don't want to see him start at any position outside of the weekly spelling of Plouffe/Arcia or in a pinch Santana/Escobar
  9. According to fan graphs his fielding wasn't so hot in 2013 or 2014. I don't want to get into a fielding metrics debate again, just to point out that hitting isn't the only aspect of Hicks' game that needs improvement. He has a minor league reputation for good fielding. I hope it's a case where he pressed too hard on hitting and let his fielding lapse. It would be really great to have Hicks be productive as to avoid rushing Buxton and having a strong left fielder or 4th outfielder when/if Buxton is ready.
  10. so "flukey" and "small sample size" suddenly don't equate to luck? Since when is an irrelevant outcome, AKA outlier, not luck? If you are going to pick and choose your sample, own it. If better quality talent only gets you to the playoffs but isn't enough to win a World Series, what is? A statistically irrelevant small sampling of outlier performances?
  11. i think it is less a reassessment of strategy, than it is a reassessment of assets over time. Depending on both May and Meyer in 2015 or 2016 might be too big of a gamble for TR.
  12. Molitor's stance on statistical analysis is encouraging. Like others I don't care if players believe in all the hocum. I do care if the analysis shows up on the field as improved methods, positioning, routes, for hitting, fielding, pitching and player development and retention. That's where player buy-in is important with Sabremetrics. Will the player, coaches, and player personnel execute on all of the information, or just the convenient information?
  13. Fabulous! Thanks for sharing Sarah. While I am a terrible pros writer, I do appreciate it very much.
  14. maybe Hunter will be great in RF and I will be eating my words. TR can gloat and say, see, I really am smarter than Sconnie on TD. But the evidence doesn't trend that way. The evidence says Hunter is a 39 year old outfielder who plays like a 39 year old outfielder should. And the last thing this group of fly ball pitching, high contact, low k, pitchers needs is more balls hitting the turf. I don't buy defensive metrics in isolation UZR is extremely dicey in its method, but if you add it all up, it all points in the direction of decline. I've seen enough of the veteran presence. What is Hunter going to mentor the kids on? How to call reporters names in press conferences? If the coaching staff can't do it, what makes you think Hunter can?
  15. if you combine this with the many other times TR has been quoted regarding advanced metrics, especially fielding metrics, you'd see a pattern pretty dismissive of them. For the TD offseason handbook it was partiçularly clear.
  16. one important difference. These players aren't Molitor's kids or wives. Molitor is their manager, leader of their coaching staff. If the coaching staff can't do it, then what is the point of having them?
  17. i'd rather see the same outfield from September than see Arcia and Hunter in the same outfield. If you aren't going to improve in the key area for improvement, then why change? The hitting was top 5 scoring in baseball. Is the plan to have football game scores? Twins beat Pale Hose 27 to 25 night in night out?
  18. why would you trade Arcia, Pinto or Vargas who all have options, to keep a 40 year old on a 1 year contract?
  19. Hunter, Molitor, or Ryan? With moves like this, all three could be gone by August.
  20. Willihammer, you nailed it, Sano is a question, until it is answered, stand pat year to year. Unless a trade comes that knocks your socks off, then comes the value part... If the trade is good enough, plan B is Escobar.
  21. bingo. I think Plouffe is very good, his batting stats were top third for 3b' and his fielding was much improved. My concern is the Twins don't really have an immediate backfill, but the return could become too high to say no. Look at the crazy money Boston paid for two third basemen at the same time, neither of which regarded as good fielders.
  22. oops! I should hae looked closer. Sorry to offend your delicate sensitivities JB.
  23. With the departure of Pablo Sandoval to Boston, the SF Giants suddenly need a 3rd basemen. It doesn't look like there are a ton of options available for the Giants outside of trade. What might Plouffe bring in return? Would you roll the dice with Santana at SS and Escobar at 3b?
  24. while I am in the resign camp, I very much agree with this idea. Sell high is absolutely a good concept, and one that I think fits this situation much better than wait and see. Wait and see goes one of two ways. 1 Dozier lives down to pessimistic standards and the team failed to capitalize on presumed trade value from two good seasons. 2 Dozier lives up to optimistic standards and costs more money to resign or go through arbitration. Do the deuce or stand up, don't just sit on the throne and wait for something to happen.
  25. we don't really know how Dozier is going to play in the future, but we know even less about the alternatives. Knowing what we know today, wouldn't you say Dozier is every bit the valuable player to the Twins that Span was? Certainly closer in quality to Span than Blackie.
