  2. The problem I see with what I consider to be the "all or nothing" approach to hitting is that it devalues putting the ball in play. Okay, two strikes, put the ball in play, make the opposing team field the ball, rather than striking out.
  3. I couldn't watch the Twins either and turned it off. Uggh.
  4. I don't get the knocks against Castro. I thought it was well known that Castro was a 2 tool catcher, good with pitchers and good at throwing out runners but a marginal bat. Moving on: I think Astudillo is one of those players who brings those "impossible to define but definitely can see" intangibles to the team. While I was disappointed with the outcome of the game yesterday, it was nice to the the Twins put together two solid games after three games of barf-ball.
  5. Last year, this would have been a walk-over win for Cleveland, with Bauer on the mound. This year, Cleveland had to find a way to win, which is what elite teams do. Give the Twins and Odorizzi credit: They hung in there against a very good team.
  6. The biggest weakness Sox teams have had in the past is the ability to catch the ball. Unless those issues have been addressed, the team will not progress. The White Sox undeniably have talent but I have to wonder about the coaching staff when it comes to fielding.
  7. Going to toss out this non-sequitur, though, like the signing of Perez, it makes one go hmmmm... I was in Laughlin, NV, a couple of weeks ago. Twins were only 20 to 1 to win the Series. I believe this is well before enough money has been bet to significantly change the betting line. Last year, I picked up the Twins and they were, if memory serves, 70 to 1 or more.
  8. Solid signing and only two years. Good deal.
  9. Looks like this is the analytics approach to baseball contracts.
  10. Wave of the future? Fewer huge contracts late in a players career and, instead, teams start paying earlier?
  11. Completely against universal DH. I don't like the idea of the game becoming that homogenized. That's why baseball has "ground rules." Baseball is a very subtle game and incredibly difficult to play, from what I can tell. (never played, just somewhat of a student of the game) I honestly don't know how one draws in more fans. It used to be a day at the ballpark was a way for people to decompress, sit back, enjoy the game, and forget about the outside world. These days, I suspect people are just too busy to want to take time out of their lives to watch baseball. I don't know if it's due to a dynamic that's changed in the American psyche or what. Of course, if I could answer that question I would probably be working in baseball promotions somewhere. I think changing baseball to draw in new fans risks alienating existing fans. Glad I'm not the one making those decisions.
  12. Ownership appears to have brought in people to address the issue through the hiring of Falvey and Levine.
  13. This is the kind of article that reminds me why I need to give the new FO a lot longer leash than I have been. The new FO is not only trying to get things straightened out at the MLB level, but also trying to revamp and get the minor league system into better shape. That's a tall order and there just is no quick fix for all of the issues the FO is dealing with.
  14. Nah, I'm an old fashioned kind of blog guy. This new-fangled stuff is just a fad.
  15. I don't like the idea of a long term contract for Machado. However, big money, short term, limits risk. Everything is a trade-off. I'm willing to accept Machado coming here on a short term big money deal. No way I want the Twins to sign Machado for 10 years. Which sort of got lost in the shuffle. Also, one cannot look at Machado's Series in isolation. Rather, it is part and parcel of Machado's history. Too lazy to say the same thing with different words, so you get recycled words.

  17. All eyes were on Machado during the Series and Machado knew he was hitting the FA market after the Series. Instead, Machado played like a punk and possibly damaged his chances at a big contract. I would think the Series should have been an incentive to step up and perform. Didn't happen,.
  18. Watched him play in the Series. He was a FA after the Series, which should have given Machado huge incentive to play his guts out. He didn't. Plus, looked at other things he's done. i've seen a couple of people, don't remember who are when, say they think Machado, because of the way he handled himself in the Series, played himself out of a big long-term contract. Grain of salt and all that.
  19. I've mentioned those things in past, which is why I didn't bring it up again. The "losing interest" angle is one that just recently struck me.
