  1. All grousing and hind sight aside, when you look at the surprise that is the Oakland A's and the disappointment that is the Twins, it just goes to show how many things have to go right in order for a team to contend. Conversely, when a perfect storm of injuries and lack of production come along, it's very difficult for a team to overcome.
  2. Not quite an apt comparison. It's hard to respect work production when the production isn't there.
  3. Yes, but is that the responsibility of the CEO or the department head?
  4. I'm going to toss this out there: What the FO does with the 40 man this off-season should tell us a lot. If it's cleaned up and players let go that have no business being on the 40 man, then good. Otherwise, yeah.
  5. The organization doesn't care about the players? The organization under the new regime looked at what happened last year and, in the off-season, rewarded the team by going out and spending money on free agent acquisitions, which, from I read, was greeted with enthusiasm by the clubhouse. Something the FO has been loathe to do in the past. Yet, the players brought in by Ryan didn't respond and step up. Also, key players, players that were brought in by the previous FO, have struggled at the MLB level. Sorry, this whole, "the organization doesn't care about the players" crap is another way to avoid the obvious: The players on the field aren't getting the job done.
  6. Late to the thread, away from a lot of online because of work, but just going to toss this out there; The FO realized this was a lost season going into the trade deadline. So, the fringe players are getting a look ahead of the players who are clearly better, because, decisions need to be made. Never know when someone might show the experts how wrong they are. The Twins need a fourth outfielder. Who is it? Give those people extended looks, increase the sample size while expecting that Buxton will play next year. Also maybe gives the team a look at alternatives if Buxton flames out again. Just spitballing here, I admit.
  7. Honestly, don't remember. I was so surprised when I looked up Mauers stats in regards to RISP I really didn't pay attention.
  8. If you look at the stats, Mauer's are rather surprising. Mauer's BA is something like .426 with RISP. (in that particular category, last I looked, he was 2nd among all AL 1B.) He is a pitchers nightmare in that scenario. Good job, Mr. Mauer.
  9. Ah, now I remember, I started down the RISP stat rabbit hole because someone mentioned that Mauer could hit more home runs if he wanted. I was trying to demonstrate that home run totals aren't necessarily the true measure of the ability of someone to get an RBI. For what it's worth.
  10. 1. I said above I'm not the stats guy that some are on this site. 2. Scoring runners is an important part of the game, right? Which I believe has been a knock against Mr. Mauer. Which turns out to be unjustified. 3. Maybe to show there's more value to Mr. Mauer than meets the eye? Again, I'm shocked that Mauer has been this good with RISP this year, considering the abysmal performance of the team overall. Also, I'd have given you odds that Mauer's value wasn't much but, RISP says there is value, providing people get on base in front of Mauer. You mentioned comparing Mauer to other 1st base. I picked RISP and, wow, was I surprised. I'm not even cherry picking, because I pulled the idea of RISP out of an un family friendly place and ran with it.
  11. I think it would be fair to compare Joe's RISP production with other 1st base. It could turn out Mauer's one of the league leaders. No, I don't think he is, but, I think the numbers are quite surprising and unexpected. Good grief, I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't have looked it up:
  12. RISP for this year shows a BA of .426. In 67 plate appearances, 54 AB's, 23 hits, and 31 RBi's. I admit, those numbers surprised me. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=mauerjo01&year=2018&t=b Maybe take a look because I may be missing something. I'm just looking at the line labeled "RISP," on the chart, "Bases Occupied," which I hope is self-explanatory but, I admit, I'm not the stats person a lot of the guys on the site are.
  13. If I read the stats correctly, Mauer has a lifetime BA of .333 with RISP.
  14. Good starting pitching is such a rare commodity I can see why the FO might be reluctant to part ways with Mr. Gibson. And, it may very well be the FO didn't receive offers of compensation commensurate with the way Gibson has been dealing over the last year. In fact, I'd be shocked if there weren't some offers for Mr. Gibson and if the FO turned the offers down, that's some food for thought, in and of itself.
  15. I think Pressly can be replaced. Gibson, though, seems to have really turned the corner so, harder to replace.
  16. I hope the change of scenery helps Mr. Dozier. What I'm not looking forward to, though, is Motter or Petit at the plate. Put Adrianza in and leave him there. I wonder what Molitor is thinking at this point? If this is all a surprise to him, that says a lot too. Also, supposedly Falvey and Levine addressed the team when they were in Boston. I wonder what was said at the time?
  17. I think trading Gibson means the FO doesn't think the Twins can compete next year either.
  18. Just listened to the Gibson interview and it was rather humorous, Gibson says he asked Molitor for one base runner and he'd go out again. What a crazy game.
  19. I think the only reason Gibson is traded, short of a AJ Pierzynksi type of haul, is the FO doesn't believe the Twins will compete next year.
  20. Yeah, me too. This is the guy that absolutely shut down the Yankees in Yankee stadium earlier this year too.
