  1. I think it's time we find out if our minor league pitchers are actually ready to play. Gondalves & Romero are at the age and have demoed the skill level in the minors to deserve a cup of coffee so we know just what we have. By the end of the week the season could be on a steep slide south so it's time.
  2. The Twins aren't going to win this year, but I suppose they needed to make a statement to the fans. This one is OK, I suppose. They likely felt compelled to do something. Better than the terrible trade away of Chi Wei Hu. I fear this will be an excuse to enable the Twins to not call up a younger prospect to get his feet wet. I suspect Recker was a clearing move to help the Braves.
  3. I'm hoping they go with Royce Lewis. The hit & miss nature of pitchers makes me crazy.
  4. There has been a marked improvement in Sano's performance this year. Not only is it better, it seems to be much more consistent than in his first two years. There could be a lot of reasons including that he came into camp in a little bit better shape and the fact that no one was suggesting he play in right field. Also, of course, he's in his 3rd year in the bigs. Right now he's batting for average, hitting the ball hard, demoing tons of power and hitting very well with runners in scoring position. But we cosistantly hear how he cannot maintain the high batting average and that he will certainly "revert to the norm". My question is "Why?" Is there a reason to believe that super stardom is beyond this 24 year old? It's almost like everyone is afraid to speculate on the upside.
  5. Sano has no chance at MVP, unless he puts up some other worldly numbers (50 HR'S, 120 RBI's, etc). The voters will not overlook the fact the he plays for a crappy team. After 1 month, Sano has spectacular numbers and the starting pitching staff has a top 5 ERA and even so the team is a whopping 1 game over .500. This is not going to end as well as it has started IMHO. That will prevent Any Twin from getting full recognition for his accomplishments.
  6. What's truly scary is the prospect of Sano getting highly motivated by his success. He made some progress this offseason, but if he could get into elite shape he has the potential to put up Bobby Bonds like numbers. One fact overlooked is that Buxton has shown the potential to be the man to protect Sano. Admittedly, the "shows" have been for very short periods. There is some real excitement potential with this team...especially now that we have through 1 month one of the best groups of starting pitchers in baseball...never mind.
  7. Hey! We cannot get to 162-0 unless we first get to 3-0. Only 159 to go,
  8. I certainly don't know what to expect from Sano this year. I have, however, admitted to myself for the very first time that he could turn out to be a colossal bust. His weight and attitude could evolve into the making of something akin to Delmon Young, but, i"Biggied"!
  9. I've never understood this "based on his salary" issue for playing time. Once a player is signed his salary becomes a fixed expense like water for the playing field at Target Stadium. Unless committed player salaries are so high the team is pressed for cash (and with about $100 million is salaries, the Twins are not) then how much someone's salary is should not effect who is in the lineup, IMHO. The only decision should be the long term best interest of the Twins. Does anyone think that long term Hughes is a major contributor to the Twin's success? Or are Berrios and May more likely to fit that criteria? Unless Hughes miraculously finds his fastball he should not be in the lineup. The Twins should be finding out at the ML level if one of their younger arms will be able to contribute long term. Beside, any embarrassment over the Hughes contract falls on prior management.
  10. I play golf with someone named Scanlon. When he learned I was from Minnesota he asked if I knew where Scanlon Minnesota was. So happens My grandmother lived there, it's a small town outside of Cloquet. Happens I was returning to Hibbing last fall and I brought him back a few souvenirs from Scanlon. He was thrilled. It's the only town large or small named "Scanlon" in the U. S. Well, today I got home from golf and my wife handed me a package from Mr. Scanlon. A baseball autographed by Harmon Killebrew. My friend had a small interest in a minor league team and Killebrew came to a benefit they had for some children charity. He had him sign baseballs and just remembered he had one left and gave it to me. I don't care how the Twins played today, it was a great baseball day in my house!
  11. Sano is a 22 year old just beginning to learn who he is. Like everyone I was disappointed when I first saw him in spring training. He looked to have a better chance of becoming Tracy Claeys than Bob Allison. I was unaware at the time that he was dealing with the personal tragedy of losing a child. On top of that, his manager put him in a position that no one...EVER...had played at his size. We are just lucky he didn't tear a hamstring or worse. Clearly this offseason he put in an effort and certainly looked good in the picture, it shows. If he steroided up, I'm sorry. I meant to say if he really worked out hard and added muscle and still dropped 15 lbs, the difference could be very significant. May be as much at third as at home. Twins management wanted Sano in right to keep Plouffe in the lineup. They wanted Buxton bunting and hitting grounders. We are over both of these dumb, dumb ideas and I fully expect much better things from our two young hot-shots. I for one, am going to sit back and enjoy.
  12. Sano has immense potential. He is also seems blessed with a very happy go lucky personality. He was born into poverty and is now wealthy beyond his imagination, so who can blame him. The question is if he can harness his joy and do what's necessary to be the best he can be. I'm hoping the answer is "yes" because the best he can be is better than darned near anyone else in baseball. The first hint will be when he shows up for spring training. A good "tell" will be if he jumps out of his Corvette or if they need a forklift to get him out of the back of Byron's pickup truck. It's up to him and I, for one, believe he'll be just fine and look forward to watching him next year.
  13. Molly is open to new ideas! Even if he didn't know that before he heard this interview, he knows it now.
  14. “We’re excited to get the chance to talk to him (Sano) and get to know him, put a good winter plan in place for him so he can be ready to hit the ground running once we get to Fort Myers.” It's Thanksgiving. Do you think they might want to get this "winter plan" in place sometime before he can eat enough of Momma's home cooking to get up to 290 pounds? If I were Falvey one of my first moves would have been to meet with him and let him know that if he gets into actual playing shape he can own 3rd base. This is one of our most valuable prospects and here we are less than a week before Turkey day and we are thinking about maybe, perhaps, someday, giving him a "winter plan". Geeze!
  15. We finally get a new executive and the Indians win the World Series. We may not see him till after the parade.
  16. Any one who thinks an eleven year old (excuse me, 33 year old) can walk into the Minnesota Twims front office, snap his fingers and have a totally new staff in place is nuts. In the first place he will need to prioritize the order of which changes to make which will likely be a very large task. Secondly, he must convince people that both he and the Twins are the destination to which they should hitch their wagons. My guess is that the most immediate task will be to redo thr coaching ranks throughout the system.
  17. “We will work diligently and collectively". This is a bit non-commital don't you think? Sure hope he got his authority in writing. Collectively with whom, is my concern. Has he been charged to work with Jim Pohlad, Paul Molitor, or Gardenhire?,
  18. "...eked out an economics degree". I guess you know something about his college work?
  19. There is not even a question about this. As my dad used to tell me, "Son, it's only results that count." This team was the worst team in MLB by 10 games. We secured the first draft pick with 2 weeks left in the season. The real question to ask is whether this team will be the hardest to turn around and it will not be. We have the basis for a very good offense. And we need to develop, beg, borrow or steal 3 good starting pitchers. Relievers can be found. Thank goodness we have someone coming in who seems to understand pitching staffs.
  20. I think one of the big solutions will depend upon which Sano shows up for spring training next year. He has certainly shown the skill to play a very good MJ 3rd base and his short stop background would support that. But at 260 - 280 lbs (pick a weight) he doesn't stand a good chance short term and no chance long term. He will continually find himself with nagging (or worse) injuries and have difficulty executing at the hot corner position. If he is properly motivated and could come in at a reasonable weight he could easily be the super star that's now just beyond his reach. In stead of an off season with relatives in New York, could we send him to Puerto Rico to train with Berrios who seems to be motivated beyond imagination?
  21. I don't like to see people get fired either, like the manager at Piggly Wiggly. But a head baseball coach of the worst team in baseball? A team that for several years running has been considered to have one of the top 3 or 4 minor league systems? C'mon, get him gone.
  22. Sano is apparently out of the lineup again today. Is he injured or the dog house? This would be 3 straight days.
  23. This is my biggest fear. It's potentially the reason the Twins stay inside for their new GM. No self-respecting "hot' candidate to move into a GM position would consider being handcuffed to a disaster of a team manager.
  24. You people just do not understand baseball. Sano has hit 21 HR's. Sano plays 3rd base and weighs in at 280 lbs. That's a home run guy. Dozier plays 2nd base. He weight in about 170 lbs. He's hit 38 HR's more than any Twin in history not named Killebrew. That's not a home run guy. Molly said so!
  25. They call up Murphy and he catches the first game. How does he do? 3/4, very well and he throws out a runner stealing. The next day they call up Berrios to start the and of course they also start Murphy again because he's the catcher with whom Berrios had all his good starts in Rochester. Simple, yes! NO! They break 'em up and start Centeno. The bewildering management of this team is beyond explanation.
