  1. Perhaps Georgia Southern can't be classified as awful, but a big 10 team beating a sun belt team isn't noteworthy. For context, LSU - an actual great team, beat Georgia Southern by 52 points.
  2. I'm still rowing the boat too, but if this team gets a new years day bowl game then college football is broken. They've literally only beaten one good team. That one was a good win, but it's still just one. The rest of the wins were against awful teams.
  3. Rooker has way too much swing and miss in his game, IMO. I don't even think he's close to the same class of prospect as Larnach.
  4. No, but you typically don't see the top prospects moved for guys that aren't underpaid. I think teams place a lot of value on their second draft pick. I think a 4th or 5th rounder would be more likely in that scenario.
  5. They typically target players with excess contract value though. Teams will pay full market salary for good players. And, teams will trade good prospects for good players. They rarely do both for the same player though. You'll fall behind other front offices pretty quickly if you make a habit out of paying full salary AND prospect capital for the type of player that other teams are only paying one or the other for.
  6. Not if said SP was already being paid full market price, no I don't think so. For a younger pitcher with excess value, yes.
  7. When the FO refused to offer Darvish the opt out he wanted, Falvey said something to the effect of, "I don't imagine a scenario where I'd ever consider giving a player opt out."
  8. You aren't just giving up your 2nd best pick though. You're giving up your second best pick, AND full market salary price. Why do that when you can just sign a FA from a similar tier for just the money? If draft picks could be traded, they'd look for excess value. Just like any other trade, less excess value equals less trade return. So, no, I don't believe teams would trade their 2nd best pick for a player with no excess value, if they were allowed to.
  9. SF didn't get completely blown out both games though. Game 1 was close to the end.
  10. It takes way more than one player to account for an 18-6 differential.
  11. I'll take my chances with 6% every single time over whatever chance we had with Randy Dobnak starting a game in Yankee Stadium. It also sends a message to your players that we don't waive the white flag just because we're down a few runs. Baldelli setting the example of throwing in the towel in game 1 might have had something to do with the Twins hitters following suit after being down 8 early in game 2.
  12. The better team shouldn't win every single game though. If that were true, the best team in baseball would go 162-0 every year.
  13. That's not at all what I said. I was speaking of talent, not performance. Berrios is a quality starter, but unlike Tanaka, he didn't step up when we needed him. Aside from Dobnak, this series has been a tale of one team's talent stepping up, and one team's talent choking. I don't think the actual talent level is that different between these two teams.
  14. I don't understand this. You can't go down 0-2. Why do you feel better accepting a loss in game 2 than you do in game 3?
  15. Berrios and Odorizzi are quality starters. Tanaka isn't any better than either of those two. The Twins have talent, they needed their talent to step up, not wilt under pressure, which they have.
  16. If you win game 2, and have Berrios and Odorizzi available for 4 and 5, then you can afford to waive the white flag in game 3. It's not ideal, but at least you still have a path to victory. They have no path to victory now. You don't think it makes a difference whether Odorizzi or Dobnak starts twice? We'll never agree then. Odorizzi isn't Cy Young, but he had a really good season.
  17. All fair points. But, just because these aren't the same players, doesn't mean they don't know the history and it's not in their heads. The Yankees are the better team, but they aren't 18-6 better. Just because the team surprised by getting here, doesn't make it unfair or unreasonable to expect them to win 1 game in a 5 game series. Personally, I'll be pretty disappointed if they get swept yet again. This team won 101 games, they shouldn't be happy just to be there.
  18. You're probably right, but the team has a decent chance of winning the next 2 with Odorizzi and Berrios. They have zero chance in game 5 now though.
  19. And if Odorizzi loses game 2, then the series is over anyway, but at least you took a shot. Game 2 was a must win game, period (IMO). Starting Randy Dobnak was pretty much a guaranteed loss. There is a reason he was driving an Uber last year, and started the year in single A. He's not a major league pitcher, never will be.
  20. Perhaps the offense scores more runs if they aren't immediately put in an 8 run hole.
  21. It makes a difference because it would have allowed Odorizzi to start twice if needed. Again, who starts games 4 and 5 now?
  22. And if we win game 3, who starts games 4 and 5? Game 2 with Odorizzi was the one to win. That would have allowed Berrios and Odorizzi to start games 4 and 5. That was the path to any possible victory. Now you're stuck with Dobnak or Smeltzer starting game 5 should you force it.
  23. If they'd won game 2, it wouldn't have been a do or die situation coming home for game 3. Game 2 was an absolute must win game. It should have been treated like a game 7. Nobody would say start Dobnak in game 7 if you have Odorizzi rested and available. The series is over now. This team has no shot at beating NY 3 straight times.
  24. I'm sure they have input, but it was 100% Rocco's call. He's the manager.
