  1. The assistant GM is their boss too. And my job doesn't have a reasonable expectation of being "transferred" to another state. If it did, that is something I would consider BEFORE I took the job. "Hey, this job I'm considering, there is a fairly good chance I could get moved to another state. Perhaps even multiple times in my career. Am I comfortable going forward with this career knowing that's the case?" I'm not saying people shouldn't treat everyone like human beings. That should be without question. I'm just saying it shouldn't be a big deal if these guys get traded or sent to the minors, etc. It's all part of the business that they pursued. And how they are going to feel about being traded or demoted, or any other perfectly normal baseball transaction should not be on the GM's mind when making those decisions. It's a business, and everyone involved is a grown ass man.
  2. If contending in 2017 is a realistic goal than why was Ryan fired? A new GM isn't going to be able to change the roster that much between November and March, so if we win the WS next year it will be with Ryan's team. This idea that we are going to go from 100 losses to WS contender in one year blows my mind. I mean, I guess I understand it's a coping mechanism for fans, but if the professionals making the decisions actually feel that way, that blows my mind.
  3. Yep, Gleeman said it well on kfan today. He said that when you sign a 32 year old FA pitcher to a 4 year deal, it's the first 2 years that you want, but you pay the extra 2 years because that's the price to get those first 2 years. The Twins should be thrilled to get years 1 and 2 only, and a prospect or two to boot. I agree 100%.
  4. Those concerns came be alleviated by eating a very large portion (if not the entirety) of his remaining salary. That gives the acquiring team the best of both worlds. They are not on the hook for any significant future commitment, but with 2 years remaining can either "freeroll" his services until he is no longer good, or flip him and get a portion of their investment back.
  5. I'd be interested in the logic behind that.
  6. The amount he's making has no bearing on the argument. Contracts don't become meaningless just because the salary is an obscene amount. And a buyout system would be pointless in MLB. The buyout is only for cap relief. The player still gets his money, you just don't have to count it all towards the salary cap. MLB doesn't have a salary cap. An NHL type buyout changes nothing in regards to Mauer.
  7. Not only that, but you get a better return at the trade deadline because teams only have the 1 avenue for improvement (trade), versus the offseason when you have trade and free agency as avenues to improve. Also, in the offseason, all 30 teams can theoretically be a trade partner, whereas at the deadline you are limited to the teams out of contention. (If you are buying.)
  8. By saying you wouldn't trade Santana for Gonsalves, then of course that must mean you'd be willing to, as a 100 loss team, trade Gonsalves for a 34 year old #4 starter?
  9. IMO, Antony's logic is backwards. As a rebuilding team, the reasons he mentions for not trading him are exactly the reason why we SHOULD trade him. Having more value than any pending FA gives him trade value!!
  10. If you eat his salary then why would a GM care what happens to him next year? The team only needs him to be good the rest of this year.
  11. It makes no sense to you because you believe they could contend next year. I don't believe they can, so for me it makes no difference who they replace him or anyone else with. Berrios, May, Dean there are 3 guys not in the rotation right now. Wheeler at AAA. Every year there are 3 or 4 buy low 1 year make good type pitchers in free agency that cost very little. When competing is not a consideration, it becomes pretty easy to fill those spots. Also, who cares how much it costs, money wise? As long as they are short commitments, payroll is not am issue with a team full of young guys.
  12. It's a business. It's not supposed to be personal.
  13. 1) I don't expect front line talent for mediocre players. Fair value is just fine for me. 2) People coming unglued on Twins Daily should have absolutely zero bearing on the FO's decisions, so I'm not sure how that is even relevant to the discussion.
  14. Right, of course I should have known. Our guys never have any trade value. It can't be that they had value and we chose not to trade them Nevermind that every year multiple guys are traded who have similar profiles to the guys I just listed, the league must have just banded together to boycott our players.
  15. That is an interesting thing for Sano to say to Reusse. I look forward to reading that interview.
  16. At his age, he's walking a tight rope. At some point he's going to decline severely, and it often happens overnight. It could be tomorrow, it could be in 3 years, I don't know. Agree to disagree on the return. I actually think that if we paid almost all of his remaining contract, we could get a pretty solid return. I don't expect this team to compete next year, so to me the question is, do you expect him to be this good for another full year? I wouldn't take that bet.
  17. Am I reading this right? The Timberwolves actually paid someone to tell them to hire Thibbadeau? That's one hell of a racket.
  18. I thought so. Then Duffey being 25 at AAA shouldn't matter to you.
  19. Perkins when he was borderline elite. Willingham after his first season. Hughes after his first season. Dozier anytime in the last 3 years. Plouffe in the last 2 years. Suzuki looked good early in his initial contract. Fien had a really good year. Santana this year. Gibson after last year. Of those: Perkins, Dozier and Hughes would have gotten really good returns. Willingham, and Gibson would have gotten good returns. Plouffe, Suzuki, Santana would have gotten okay returns. Fien might have gotten a lot to ticket or two.
  20. Wait, aren't you the guy always saying that age to level doesn't matter with these guys?
  21. Yeah the Braves system is absolutely loaded. They will win a playoff series before we do. They did what we should have done and actually traded assets of value and rebuilt.
  22. Sorry, but the call to the mlb needs to be earned in the field, IMO. And this guy is not a major league player, clearly. This isn't the St. Paul Saints, calling this guy up to the major leagues as some kind of sentimental token of loyalty would be flat out embarrassing, I think. Besides, he sounds like a smart guy, so once he retires he may eventually make it to the majors as a coach.
  23. You didn't answer my question whatsoever. What has Duffey done to stay in the rotation? Also, Milone and Nolasco are probably more likely to be 8/31 trade candidates, not 8/1 candidates. When the rotation stays the same on 8/2 then is it ok to make room for Berrios? And if so, why is it suddenly fair to do it to them then, and not now?
  24. So August 2, is the magical date when it DOES start to affect his development or future?
  25. I'm sorry I'm not following what you are saying here. You are saying that once someone makes the big leagues he can never be sent back down, no matter how poorly he plays? Hasn't Berrios earned his way to the big leagues?
