  1. But the problem is Molitor views him as a semi regular player. Every time Mollie starts Santana, one of those guys has to sit.
  2. An inflated babip doesn't only have to lead to singles. Particularly for a player that has good speed, you can get "lucky" doubles and triples. I'd have to look at how many of them were fly balls vs. line drives. Of course, it wouldn't affect HR's, but he only had 7, it's not like he hit 25. I'd have to look at where they landed, but just spit balling, it's possible a good number of them were barely HR's.
  3. Looking at the various adjusted standings on baseball prospectus, the Twins "should" have between a .433 and .450 winning percentage for the season, depending on which model used. So, I would agree, it's probably safe to call them a 91 loss team (splitting the difference between .433 and .450) rather than a 100 loss team. Either way, not good. And that awful start wasn't completely luck based. They had some unlucky RISP numbers, but also they just played bad, and made poor decisions.
  4. He has a career ERA of 4.5 and near 5 this year. If that's not the definition of a fringe number 5, I'm sorry I don't know what is.
  5. Vargas can play 1B almost every day and Mauer to the bench. One to two starts per week and pinch hit every close game for Joe. People need to accept that Mauer is never going to regain his form. This is who he is now.
  6. Wow. With such a team friendly contract, and control through 2021, I wouldn't even consider moving him without being completely blown away if I'm Tampa. I'd probably ask for Buxton, Kepler, Polanco and Jay from the Twins. No way I do that if I'm the Twins.
  7. I disagree big time. When I look at that rotation I see another pretty terrible rotation. Bottom 3 or 4 in all of baseball most likely. Berrios has a good chance to be a great pitcher. But, he's still going to have ups and downs next year, he's only going to be 23 then. He is a future 2, but best case for next year is he probably pitches like a 3. Ervin can be a 4, if he continues to pitch like he has this year, but at his age that is no guarantee. Santiago, I really don't know. If he truly is a guy who outperforms his FIP, then great, he's a solid 4 or fringe 3. If he regresses to his peripherals, then he's Nolasco. And not decent NL, in his prime Nolasco, but Twins dumpster fire Nolasco. Duffey and Gibson are fringe 5's/AAAA guys. Yeah, yeah, I keep being told that Gibbs isn't REALLY as bad as he looks, or has just been unlucky, or is pitching through an injury. That might all be true, but the guy is pushing 30. This is who he is, IMO. He's barely a MLB pitcher. Now if a new GM comes in and shakes things up, who knows. But, the rotation you listed, yuck.
  8. That's fair enough, but doesn't seem consistent. If he's trying to keep guys hungry and uncomfortable then why is DanSan in the lineup everyday, despite being the worst position player in baseball the last 2 years?
  9. I think, of course, it's entirely possible the offers were underwhelming. But "safe to assume"? No way. It's entirely possible that there were fair offers and they just over value some of those guys.
  10. Well they are on pace for 98 losses, so probably close enough for the purpose of discussion to call them "a 100 loss team".
  11. Certainly holding out desperate hope of an August PTBNL is worth blocking Chargois from getting MLB experience....right?
  12. Personally, I'm still in asset allocation mode. I wouldn't trade any prospects...yet. Which means I'd lean toward either signing a make good 1 year bounce back candidate that can be flipped. Or, just turning out over to Murphy and Garver and letting them sink or swim.
  13. Fair to say Vielma is basically Pedro Florimon? Or is he truly an elite defensive SS, not just good like Florimon was?
  14. I don't mean to cop out, but I think it's some of both. I think there is a lot of variance in baseball, which is why they play 162 games. So, I'd never say that anyone has zero chance, like I would in the NBA. But, I think the odds are stacked towards the better teams, and specifically the teams that pitch better.
  15. Ok, I also did not realize 10/5 was for any move I thought that was also for trades.
  16. 1) The Diamondbacks bought Zach Greinke, the Twins would never do that. Even with a new GM the Pohlads would nix it. The Brewers have shown a willingness in the past to trade for ace pitchers when they are in a playoff hunt, another thing the Twins have never done. I won't believe we'll hire the new GM from outside the organization until it actually happens. I may definitely move our timeline up significantly with a smart hire, but I just don't see it. 2) The Orioles are probably an exception to the rule. They have an elite lineup that the Twins will probably never have. Most consistently good teams start with starting pitching. 3) Sure, a new GM can take away DanSan, but they can't force Molitor to stop bunting and start pinch hitting, or stop burning through 5 relievers in a blowout. To reiterate a statement I made above, I think a smart GM hire from outside the organization who puts a greater emphasis on analytics and medical and training could speed up the timeline significantly. For the time being, I just don't trust the Pohlad's and Dave St. Peter to do that.
  17. If Molitor thinks that Sano isnt one of our 9 best players than perhaps it's Mollie who should be sent to Rochester.
  18. No. Sano is a good mlb player. Light is most likely Jim Hoey. Having him on the 40 man means he most likely gets a shot before guys who might be better than him, but aren't in the 40 man. I think D Mac was saying that we'd be better served, as a rebuilding team, by targeting an A ball prospect who doesn't need a 40 man roster spot.
  19. 1) Other teams can buy good starting pitching. I don't believe for a second that the Pohlad's don't have any payroll restrictions. The Twins can get the Hughes and Nolascos and Santanas, but those types are mostly background noise. This team is never getting a 1 or 2 in free agency. 2) I can't picture any starting rotation that can be competitive any time soon. Sure, we have some promising prospects. But, they are a couple of years away, and as we've learned the last couple years, there are going to be ups and downs even once they do get here. I think you are looking at at least 4 or 5 years before a rotation of Berrios, Jay, Gonsalves, Stewart and company are actually settled in and top form. 3) We are stuck with Molitor. Sorry, just one man's opinion but I think he's the worst manager in baseball. The guy plays DanSan as an everyday player, constantly gives away outs, almost never makes blatantly obvious pinch hitting moves, and is horrible at managing a bullpen.
  20. I'm not sure I buy that as a good reason for the Rule. In that case, why even bother with a salary cap in football? Teams could just pay guys extra under the table. You could go on and on.
  21. Ok, that's an odd quirk. Knowing that, I'd never agree to a full no trade clause if I were a GM. If that's true, why even bother putting Joe on waivers? He's never saying yes to a trade. And even if he is, there is no reason whatsoever to wait until August.
  22. Is he likely to be a significant upgrade over the internal options we have at RH RP?Unless the the Twins see a specific mechanical flaw that they can correct, I don't think he is. Edit: Remember that Light is on the 40 man, so he's likely taking a roster spot from someone who is, at the least, equally as good.
  23. How is it a trade if you are getting nothing in return?
  24. I don't think Mauer can decline a waiver pickup, he can only veto a trade. Or is that incorrect?
