  1. Well the game, and the way talent is evaluated, has changed dramatically since Ryan was last a scout. For the last 3 or few years, Ryan has spoke of the talent he assembled, before each season, and said he thought they were rosters that could compete. Of course, the comeback could be that he was lying to protect ticket sales and team interest. But, the moves he made were suggestive of him believing what he said, not of a rebuilding team. Based on that, I think his ability to evaluate talent has probably fallen pretty far over the years.
  2. What are you basing your opinion of Ryan as "easily a top 30 to 50 talent evaluator" on? I'm not saying he's not, I guess I don't even know how to evaluate that, just curious why you think he is.
  3. Good luck getting Mollie on board with evidence based decisions.
  4. I don't think you can do FaceTime via fax machine.
  5. That's not the only reason. Pohlad might view Dozier as being extremely loveable.
  6. That is a good point. Ownership has already shown that it will put restrictions on who can be fired. It wouldn't surprise me if they made occasional demands on the player personell side as well.
  7. Sid: "You guys didn't even make it to AAA and now you are GM's. How do you explain that? " I rarely agree with Sid, but he is an absolute treasure, and I'm convinced he'll still be working in 50 years when I die.
  8. Don't worry, I'm sure there is a similar stance in one of the Dozier trade threads. Copy/paste, done.
  9. I think you are talking about 2 different players. This thread is about a proposed trade of Sano, not Dozier.
  10. Most local media were saying right around .500 with a decent shot at a playoff spot. Like I said, they clearly have some nice young talent, and that's exciting, but it's not looking anywhere close to a .500 team. Keep in mind, aside from OKC, they haven't played anyone good yet. Grizzlies twice missing 2 key players each time, Kings, and Lakers. These are the teams the Wolves HAVE to beat if they are going to contend for that 8 seed.
  11. The Gophers would be 9-0 with a mediocre QB, you are correct on that. As it stands, we have no chance of beating Wisconsin with Leidner as QB, so it doesn't really matter what we do against Nebraska. Leidner has some wins against crappy competition. He hasn't won many big games. What is his record against Wisconsin and Iowa? One win combined, I believe? And they have yet to beat anyone this season.
  12. Don't want to speak for Mike, but I'm pretty darn sure he wasn't calling for us to trade for Chapman.
  13. If they want to add power, why would they trade Sanchez?
  14. A whole lot of sizzle this offseason about the Wolves, (locally at least) but not a lot of steak. Obviously they have some young talent, but as always with Minnesota teams, maybe next year. At least they'll get another high lottery pick. Hopefully someone that can shoot.
  15. If most of the pitching staff still needs to be rebuilt, then aren't they, by definition, still rebuilding? This pitching staff isn't just a few tweaks away, IMO.
  16. I don't think they ever did actually rebuild. Rebuilding teams would have traded guys like Willingham, Perkins, Hughes, Suzuki and Plouffe when they still had value. Outside of Span, they never made a single move that hinted at a rebuild. Most of their young talent is just a byproduct of picking high in the draft.
  17. I could see teams playing hardball with Dozier, but the SP class this offseason is awful. They will get fair offers for Ervin, if they don't trade it will be because they decided they won't.
  18. Thank you Jimmer. There seems to be a disconnect between what our offense actually is, and what perception of it is. I get that the offense is not add bad as the pitching, but middle to bottom third in the league definitely leaves plenty of room for improvement.
  19. Another game with the Gophers desperately trying to overcome their 5th year senior's awful QB play.
  20. That would be a valid excuse if Leidner was a Sophomore and was putting up below average numbers. He's a 5th year senior (don't leaders make those around them better? ), putting up laughably terrible numbers. There are plenty of programs around the country that don't have 4 and 5 star wide receivers, and yet their QB is still able to put up at least mediocre numbers. Good QB'S throw their receivers open by throwing it to a spot as soon as the receiver breaks. Leidner doesn't do that, he looks for a guy to be open before he'll throw it. He also misses badly a few times every game.
  21. I guess I don't know where I said they should be paid a pittance. I just said they shouldn't get the equivalent of a comparable private sector job. You don't have to be rich to be willing to take a 40k a year side job. I mean, that's actually kind of insulting to those of us that make similar money working long hours all year. I want my representatives to represent all walks of life, not just lawyers and such. Maybe I'm naive, but I like to think that people who truly to serve the public don't need 6 figures to do so.
  22. There is no such thing as a 25th man. He's either on the team or he's not. If he's on the team there is a risk he could see 300 AB's, you just never know.
  23. It's a bit more nuanced than your last paragraph. There are a limited number of roster spots. You have to take into account the production could get by giving someone else that roster spot. If Mauer can give you 1 WAR, but a guy making the league minimum can give you 1.5 or more WAR from that roster spot, then to me it's a better use of resources cut Mauer and give that spot to the guy making the league minimum.
  24. It's supposed to be public service, not a career. I'm not saying they should do it for free. But they shouldn't make an equivalent to the private sector, how is that public service?
  25. That isn't a job I'd describe as taxing. I'd go as far as to call it pretty much the opposite of taxing. Now campaigning could be pretty taxing, but a lot of these state lawmakers go basically unopposed most of the time.
