  1. Come on Mike, being a teacher is a career, it's not public service. That is a huge difference.
  2. And nobody is saying they should work for free. Why is it hard to find another job if you are gone 4 months of the year? Sure, that eliminates some jobs, but there are also lot of fields where you can be an independent contractor and set your own schedule. If the goal is to treat it like any other career and get paid top dollar then just go work in the private sector. 40k per year, plus what you can make in 8 months as an independent contractor in your field, is not peanuts. Public service is SUPPOSED to involve sacrifice, that's why it's called public service. And I already addressed the campaigning side of it, and like I said, yes in competitive districts that is a big time commitment, but in a lot of these districts these guys practically run unopposed.
  3. As is trading Perkins. Perkins is a guy that you'd have to throw in a good prospect or two just to get the other team to take him.
  4. There aren't geographic and familial loyalties that go into play when considering market size for Nielsen ratings purposes. That is apples and oranges when compared to a practical application of available market to a baseball team. You honestly think that the A's have AN EQUAL chance at someone born and raised in San Francisco, whose family and friends influenced them to grow up as Giants fans, as the Giants do? I mean, come on, that's just not reality.
  5. Someone finally got around to telling the Wolves that the 3 point shot can be a valuable weapon. Only took like what, 6 or 7 years?
  6. I'm afraid KAT isn't eligible for that job until 2032, which makes me feel incredibly old.
  7. Minneapolis and St Paul would be different markets, for the purpose we are discussing, if they each had their own major league baseball teams. I suppose you think the Mets have just as much chance of getting the average Bronx resident as the Yankees do? It's silly to think the OAKLAND A's should be able to draw as much revenue from the city of San Francisco as the SAN FRANCISCO Giants do.
  8. After couple of thoughts on this. 1) Baseball is not a sport in which rookies come up and play very well often. Some do, sure, but not the majority. Often you need to give a guy plenty of opportunity and experience before they make the necessary adjustments at this level. How are guys supposed to make those adjustments if they are expected to play well immediately to earn the experience? 2) It's not that simple. Sometimes you have a stubborn manager (cough, cough) who refuses to play a young player unless forced to by multiple injuries.
  9. These are human beings and have many different reasons for choosing to sign with a team in free agency. Sometimes (though certainly not always), it's mainly about the money. Unless you know him personally, there is no way you can make a declarative statement like this.
  10. I have to agree with the previous 2 posters. It's unfortunate, because you are right- his bat does profile pretty well for what we need there, but his defense is below the line of what is acceptable under any circumstances. I'm not sure I can buy it being an outlier. Unless he was playing injured, I don't see how defense could slump. I get that the metrics can vary from year to year, but I think that has more to do with the inexact way those are measured than it does anything else.
  11. That still doesn't answer my question on why he'd have input on trades though. Am I the only one who finds it ironic that Mollie rips on front offices that meddle with the manager, while the same article suggests he should have input in front office decisions?
  12. I love how there is seemingly no middle ground between gushing over Mollie to no end, roasting him in the press conference. Just because some of us are alarmed by the lengths they went to praise him, doesn't mean we expected them to rip him.
  13. If he's likely gone in a year anyway, then why oh why would he have input in trades?
  14. Yep, and Mollie will be one of the first voices Falvey gets input on when deciding trades?? And Falvey will have no input on players roles on the field? Talk about total buzz kill. Man I hope this is pure lipservice.
  15. You have the Twins carrying an 11 man pitching staff? That'll be the day.
  16. No organization is going to stand in the way of a vertical move. So yeah, they aren't going to be able to pluck someones Assistant GM to come be ours, but if the best candidate hasn't reached that height yet, then we could hire them. I'm sure there are a few very bright people here, and yes they should get a chance to stay. Of course, we wouldn't be in this mess if everyone was good at their job, so some guys will have to be cut loose. I already said I understand giving him a year, and also said that if it turns out he's the very best candidate, then so be it. This isn't some kind of witch hunt, they got to where they are, performance wise, for a reason.
  17. Yeah I'm not a big fan of it either. I want them to try to fill every position with the very best available candidate. If that just so happens to be the guy already there, that's fine. But, it would be quite a coincidence if that were the case. But, I realize you can't turnover an entire front office in one offseason. So, I'm hoping he's just hanging around in an advisory role, with no real important responsibilities, until they can evaluate him and go from there.
  18. I would never give a relief pitcher anything close to 5/90. That much money would be better spent on everyday players, or at least starting pitching. And, aside from Mo Rivera, and a handful of others, elite relievers are likely to disappear at any moment.
  19. Correct, the way to get them is before they figure it out at the MLB level. Hopefully the new FO will bring in some talent evaluators that can find a guy or two that just need a change of scenery or an overhauled delivery or something. It can be done.
  20. Which free agent starter is available that is not a basement guy? I'm not seeing any.
  21. 1) Yes, all those young guys need to play. Pencil them in and see who sinks and who swims. That is part of rebuilding. A rebuild is not complete until most of your team can be written in with ink. We don't have very many spots that can be written in ink yet. 2) On Gordon, I don't even consider a guy as being on the MLB radar until they've proven it at AA. That is not a knock on Gordon. You have to crawl before you can walk. But, I wouldn't even consider a prospect as a potential solution at a position until they prove it at AA. 3)Yes, Sano needs to play 3B every single day for at least a full season, I would do 2 full seasons. Luckily we are a rebuilding team, so we can afford to give him time over there. 4) You keep qualifying it with "complete rebuild". Well of course, nobody would claim the cupboard is completely bare. That doesn't mean we are not rebuilding. Yes, we have a foundation. But if a tornado comes and knocks your house down to the foundation- it's time to rebuild.
  22. I wasn't referring to his decisions as GM, I was referring to his evaluation of the players he had assembled at the start of each season. He looked at (scouted) a collection of baseball players, and his evaluation was that they looked like playoff contenders. Several times that was his evaluation, and each time he was wrong, most of the time by a massive margin.
  23. I'm pretty sure both teams that just finished the World Series traded for their respective aces. The Twins traded for the only ace they've had in my adult lifetime (Johan- most people think we took him in the Rule V draft, that's not quite true. Someone else took him, then traded him to us.) Liriano was traded for. He would have been an ace if he didn't blow out his arm. You absolutely can trade for future aces. You just have to be smart enough to outscout everyone else, something we haven't had in a while.
  24. Not a single one of those pitchers has come close to proving anything, other than Gibson, who has proven to be mediocre at best. Left field also needs an answer, Rosario's ceiling is 4th OF'er. The other 2 outfielders have a lot of promise, but each have 1 good month in the majors. Gordon hasn't proven anything in the minors, let alone the majors. Sano may not be able to play third base. We have a plethora of options at DH, but none that anyone can have complete faith in right now. Yes, this team is still rebuilding. The rebuild is not complete until raw talent stats to turn into proven baseball players.
  25. Absolutely. Short of revealing specific strategy, or industry secrets, I'd like my teams to be as direct and honest as they can. Fan interest is what allows them to make millions off this game in the first place. Plus, I don't see the downside. Nobody is going to buy season tickets just because the front office tells them they are going to be good.
