  1. If everything holds, it looks like it would be James Paxton, next Saturday.
  2. In the sense of anything can happen in sports sure. But, I was mostly responding to Pardon, who said he likes their chances to win at least one playoff series. I interpreted that to mean that he thinks they are at least somewhat close to a coin flip. (Why would he like their chances otherwise?) I just don't buy that Butler is superhuman enough to win a series against GS, with a team that lost at home to Memphis. To me that shows zero mental toughness, as even minimal desire would be sufficient to beat Memphis.
  3. Well his dWAR went from a positive 0.8 in 2015, to a positive 0.1 in 2016, to a negative 1.6 last year. So, it looks more like a steady, year to year decline to me, rather than a sudden fluke season. It's been documented in multiple other threads that he lost more than a step last year, for whatever the reason. The awful baserunning numbers would also suggest that his awareness and instincts lag well behind his speed. Which, I assume might also show itself on defense. I'll be interested to see how he does this year, that's for sure.
  4. Yeah, I'd actually say Granite has a significantly higher ceiling of the two. And I've also never been very high on Granite.
  5. Rosario looked like a very poor outfielder in 2017 to my eye. It's also what we have, and most people don't have time to watch every game of every team, which is what would be necessary for the eye test to have any accuracy whatsoever.
  6. If Butler is really the difference between losing at home to Memphis- a team that hadn't won a single road game in 2018, and beating GS in a playoff series, then he is the single most underpaid player in the history of sports, and had better win every single MVP vote. Sorry, not buying it. It's one thing for him to carry this sorry team in a singular game during the regular season here and there. It's a totally different thing to do it for a full series.
  7. Alex Gordon was a plus 0.7 dWAR last year, to Rosario's minus 1.6. Rosario is going to have to improve a ton on defense to get to Gordon's level.
  8. I'm not sure why people think the MLB union should be fighting for the milb players. Although they play the same sport, the MLBPA represents major league ballplayers, it's right there in the name. This seems to me like expecting an electrician union to fight for, and give up money to the plumbers that happen to work for the same contractor.
  9. Wait, I thought before you said you were giving your opinion? A few posts later it's just a factually bad contract regardless of Mike's opinion?
  10. When a company gives you years of on the job training (minor leagues), of which they are not yet making a profit off your services, I'm not sure it's unreasonable to have some type of non compete structure in place. Especially if those rules are known before a player agrees to it. I don't think the Twins could stop Kennys from persuing any of the thousands of other career fields that exist, anywhere he wants to, just not the one that they spent several years and millions of dollars training him for. Perhaps that non compete period is too long, but I don't think it's unreasonable to have one.
  11. Granite isn't the kind of prospect that you worry about service time with.
  12. If he's good enough to stick all year on a playoff contender, I'm not sure why they'd put him in AAA next year, as a 28 year old. 28 year olds in AAA are career minor leaguers, they don't have a future in mlb.
  13. Of course. But I'm referencing posts that are making judgements based on ST stats, not those other things. And to me, ST stats have no meaning whatsoever. Not even as a tie breaker, or for the 24th or 25th guy. To be clear, if it's me, I'm using everything except ST stats to make the decision. All the things I listed, and all the things you listed. I honestly would make sure I didn't even know what the ST stats were, just to make sure I wasn't subconsciously influenced by them. I wish they wouldn't even keep track of them.
  14. Well, I disagree. Mainly because in baseball, even the greatest players to ever play the game go through extended slumps, relatively often. I'd make my roster decisions based on talent, tools, and track record in actual games. Spring Training would have almost no input in my roster decisions. That's how I'd do it, that may not be how it's actually done.
  15. That's not, or at least shouldn't be, the purpose of ST. It's practice to get warmed up for the season. It shouldn't be an audition.
  16. Sure, but 30- some innings are nowhere near that point. That babip and strand rate are simply not sustainable.
  17. I don't agree that Busenitz was great at mlb in 2017. Lucky, yes. 4.20 FIP, unimpressive k rate, extremely lucky babip and strand rate.
  18. Well if I know anything about billionaires, it's that for the most part they don't really minimize any amount of their money. Of course, if they viewed it as a profitable investment, they might go for it. Either they've decided that the money it would take to feed and house the "filler" isn't worth the additional benefit, or they have yet to be presented with the theory. But, almost none of them are going to do it just because it's the right thing to do. And that's not just baseball owners.
  19. The devil's advocate would say that for the most part, the actual prospects got a big enough bonus to pay for housing and nutrition. 90% of these guys are just "filler", that the organization knows has zero chance of contributing to the mlb club, and they don't really care how who or how good the filler is.
  20. Well I'm definitely in the minority, but I'm assuming they see/saw something correctable with Kinley when they selected him. And, I'm pretty excited to see what they can do with his electric stuff.
  21. According to Vice Sports, it goes back into the owners pockets. "As currently constructed, MLB's drug policy—whether for performance-enhancers like steroids or recreational drugs like cocaine or marijuana—places the salaries of suspended players right back in the pocketbooks of their employers." https://sports.vice.com/en_us/article/ez33km/how-mlb-profits-from-players-with-addictions
  22. But that's not what he said. He said they were "likely" to win the division, which they are. Of course there are no locks in sports, and the Twins have a shot at the division. But, Cleveland is, and should be the heavy favorite.
