  1. If those things are true, then why would anyone trade anything decent for him?
  2. I can't believe some people think these grown adults need to be babysat by teams, and that the teams should be jointly liable for not babysitting them 24/7. These are grown adults, not little kids. Seems patronizing to all players to suggest they aren't capable of the responsibility of their own behavior. Do you feel the same way about all jobs, or just athletes?
  3. I would guess that most of us have had the opportunity to cheat or lie to gain an advantage over another employee or student at some point in our lives. So, I disagree that none of us have been in the same position.
  4. The first paragraph of the linked article disproves your statement that insurance of high dollar contracts is "universal". From there it goes on to give several reasons why it's fair to conclude that Hughes' contract may not be insured.
  5. Isn't the punishment a set number of games? How do they target minorities with their punishment? The only thing I agree with here is that 80 games for juicing is stupid. That is far too light, IMO. That's not really enough to deter anyone when the reward for getting away with it is tens to hundreds of millions of dollars.
  6. Well we don't know if Falvine has that choice. The owner is going to have say in eating that much money, whether we think they should or not.
  7. Not buying the excuse. If an athlete wants to take a B12 supplement, I'm guessing the team can quite safely obtain it for them, rather than some athletic trainer in a third world country.
  8. From what I've read, insurance only kicks in if the player misses the entire season. It also typically only pays for catastrophic, easily verifiable injuries. Just my opinion, but I highly doubt it's going to pay out for something like dead arm.
  9. I mean, Lynn might not even be ready for opening day, and he's coming off a healthy off-season, he just missed a couple of weeks of formal ST.
  10. Frankly, I'm a little concerned that he'll ever be able to throw the slider effectively after this injury. Isn't this the finger that is most active in gripping the slider? As to timeline, like others, I'm no expert, but just as an uneducated opinion, I'd say he's going to be behind if he's not already throwing off a mound. He hasn't pitched in almost 6 months. I'd think he'd need roughly a month of game action to be ready to start a mlb game. So he'd need to go from not being able to grip a ball, to pitching in a rehab start in 2 weeks? I'm not convinced that's realistic.
  11. I also thought that was optimistic, that he'd likely need a lengthy rehab stint extending well into May. But, I was sternly informed by TD staff that I was wrong.
  12. I disagree. Does Mejia have things to work on? Of course. But he was a league average starter last year. And he was a rookie, so I'd expect some improvement this year. I think expecting anything close to that from Hughes is wishful thinking, and I think the win probability gap between Mejia and Hughes is enormous.
  13. Vargas is from Puerto Rico. He was signed as an undrafted 18 year old.
  14. Not that I agree, but selling out allows even balls that aren't perfectly squared up to clear the fence. Sure, when he gets a hold of one, it should be out even at 85%, but he won't always get all of it every time.
  15. I'd prefer a higher OBP that high in the lineup. I think Rosario is more suited for the 5 or 6 spot.
  16. Me too, but this tells me they must plan on other significant signings this off-season, which is good news, IMO.
  17. I've defended the Kinley selection, but I wouldn't want them to trade to keep him. The guy is 27 years old. If he's not ready now, more time in the minors is unlikely to help. Just send him back if he's not ready.
  18. I'll never understand why people pay attention, at all, to stats from practice games.
  19. I would guess that Berrios would rather have the honor of starting a game in his home territory of Puerto Rico (though I don't know for sure), which is why he won't start opening day.
  20. The Twins have upwards of $80 million coming off the books after this season. They can afford Lynn, if he's good enough that they want him back.
  21. Fair enough. I don't agree though. I think the casual fan might grumble if he's let go, but in the end it will be wins and losses that determine how much of their money the team actually gets. I'm also not sure where the player vs. owner part of your response comes from. The idea, if Joe is let go, would be to allocate that money and roster spot towards different players, not for the owner to pocket it.
  22. But even if he is finally better, doesn't the aging curve at some point negate some of that? Not saying improvement isn't on the spectrum of possibilities, but you seem too feel it's practically inevitable.
  23. Jimmer, do you have any specific reasons you feel so strongly that Mauer will improve in 2018? Or just a feeling?
