  1. As a great glove at 3B? Yeah, that still plays. Gunnar has the potential to be an all-time great so it makes sense to allow him to work things out. Wallner has the potential to be...Miguel Sano, so teams will obviously be less willing to let him fight through slumps.
  2. The difference is 293/324 plays at SS so you can ride it out. 189/235 wouldn't barely play at Catcher. Matt is no Gunnar. Happy to allow him to hit in low leverage PAs against lefties, but why would you want him starting against any left handed pitcher as a player that offers no value on defense either.
  3. At a certain point it's up to the player to perform. Matt quite simply sucks, right now, against lefties. It's malpractice to allow him medium or high leverage plate appearance against one. 169/250/361 this season across AAA and MLB. 118/189/235 in his major league career. We can cry about small samples but he simply hasn't done anything to allow his manager to play him.
  4. I mean, they're doing that right now and he's on a heater exceeding that. He's only started 5 of the last 10 games and on a full season pace of 375 PAs in that stretch. So...idk what to tell you.
  5. He's never passed the eye test for me, and he's 5 runs below average in metrics. Which, in 2/3 a season of PAs isn't the worst. But not exactly something that gets me excited.
  6. That was against LHP in the minors in 2022 or something. It's nice to see. But then you notice he had massive splits in AAA this year as well. So...I wouldn't hold my breath that he can figure it out.
  7. I won't say he couldn't improve. His peripherals against lefties haven't been worlds different. But I don't have faith he'd improve enough to the point he's a good player combined with his bad defense.
  8. It's not that we're not happy with the results, we just understand it's not sustainable. Wallner isn't going to have a BABIP of .500 the rest of the season. I'm not gonna say he couldn't sustain a 10% HR rate though. He does have that kind power.
  9. Regular, yes! Everyday player that you set it and forget it, no! He's a 400 PA player on a good team. And he'd likely hit close to 30 HRs in those PAs.
  10. Come on. That's loser mentality. If he was thrown so badly that a few small, bad calls made him become completely unplayable, then it goes to my point that he is not someone a good team should rely on to play every day.
  11. His inability to hit LHP, a 37% K rate, and mediocre defense...
  12. It's a heck of a lot closer to "plenty" than "none". And if it's 10% of hitters its not an outlier. It's just that Matt isn't good enough. Which is fine. He's fine. He's worthy of being a Major Leaguer in a platoon situation. But let's not pretend he's anything not way closer to being Joey Gallo with bad defense than an actual elite hitter. He's not Gallo because I expect 33% K instead of 40% but that frustration we have will resurface when his luck starts turning again.
  13. Let's be serious. Judge struck out at a rate 5% lower than Wallner in the minors. Using him as a comp, expecting Matt to drop his K rate from 37% down to 27% is ignoring reality.
  14. very good point. and they sold off some very valuable pieces. I don't know why people are pretending there was nobody good that moved teams. Elfin is another player that I wish the Twins were on. But he's owed 4 million for the remainder of the season and 18 Million next, so that was never happening. God forbid the Twins pay for talent.
  15. And this is why I was in favor of the Twins going for it this season. This is not a great outfield. With both of them they'd grade out as a bad defensively and slow, even if Buxton remains healthy like this season. The Twins have an exciting infield obviously but that OF is very much held together with duct tape. Martin (and Larnach tbh) is another in a long list of examples why you shouldn't instinctively be afraid to trade Top 100 prospects...
  16. To be completely honest, he will almost certainly never be an everyday player for an entire season on a good team. His skillset is limited and he can be a good contributor on a good team in smaller capacity. I really hope the Twins don't think he's the every day RF in 2025.
  17. 17 Ks in 33 PAs prior to demotion = 51.5% 19Ks in 51 PAs after promotion = 37.2%
  18. I can list off another dozen if you'd like. And they tend to be superstars because its difficult, yes. But lets not pretend there are literally no players capable of both limiting strikeouts and hitting dingers. But I don't expect Wallner to be able to slash his Ks in half, so it's kind of irrelevant anyways.
  19. That's just not even close to true. There's plenty of HR hitters with good K rates. Juan Soto, Anthony Santander, Jose Ramirez, Yordan Alvarez, et al. I get what you're saying, and they shouldn't try to change Wallner as a hitter but rather refine his skillset. But there are plenty of big power guys with good contact.
  20. Agreed, but unfortunately he's not going to be able to sustain .260/.375. He'd need a BABIP of near .400 in order for that to work out, which isn't going to happen. Happy to see him on a hot streak but we should expect him to look more like Mark Reynolds than Aaron Judge. Even now during a hot streak his K-rate is 37%. This doesn't bode well and I wouldn't enter 2025 expecting him to produce enough to get 500 PAs.
  21. They quite clearly had a need at SP and refused to even look at adding anyone in free agency. They had no interest in actually contending, only wanting to compete.
  22. I think last year was the exception. The Mets pulled the cord only 6.5 games out of the Wild Card, and did so in extremely dramatic fashion, selling off players that weren't just rentals. That'd be like if the Cubs sold off Bellinger, Imanaga, and/or Neris.
  23. Yet another reason expanding the playoffs was incredibly stupid.
  24. They picked up a Marte backup, a 5th starter and a plethora of bullpen arms. They actually had a great deadline, doing enough to patch holes while not sending out any prospects that the team will miss. They did enough to show the team on the field and the fans in the stands that they want to win. I'm actually super excited about the Mets now!
  25. Not really. He offered massive contracts to the two highest profile free agents and will write a blank check to Soto. Pete was offefered a 7 year $158 Million extension and turned it down! Dumb cause he's not getting that offer again after this disappointing season. A one year unplanned reset to help escape some of the luxury tax is going to make next offseason quite interesting.
