The Twins’ Updated Bullpen Picture is Missing Pieces
bjorks replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As a fan, the problem is this is not fantasy baseball. Pitchers/Agents have to agree to make the move from a starter to a reliever and once someone has (reverse) shifted from reliever to starter there isn't very many willing to make that change back to the pen - (I always liked Littell), but he's not making the move to the pen when there's (arguably) 29 other teams who would pay for him to eat up innings as a 4/5. I doubt Raya and his agent are thrilled his (maybe) only path to the bigs is as a career reliever and I would bet Tom Pohlad's salary Prielipp and his agent want to move to the pen without assurances he gets a crack post lockout to prove he can start. Same goes for Festa/SIM/Mathews/Abel/Bradley. Bailey Ober's agent would demand a trade if they asked him to go to the pen with the exception it was a short term "thing" and even then. IMHO there's a lot of teams who would role with SIM as a #5. As a #4 I don't like him, but between Mathews/Abel/Bradley one of those needs to show up (not putting Festa in there due to injury) and prove they can be a CONSISTENT #4. We'll have to wait and see how much trust DS has in SIM getting through the lineup more than 3x's, but would anyone be opposed to using Prielipp/Abel as an opener every 5th day and letting them go 2-3-4, especially if they're going to limit them (potentially) in St. Paul anyway? I'd rather have a blowup inning early with a chance to claw back then a bullpen that gives it up with 3 outs or less to comeback. SIM has proven he's a slightly better than average 4-5 inning guy. Maybe the closer role can be fixed with an opener of more than an inning.- 56 replies

Forearm strain…doesn’t that typically lead to TJ? If so, Lopez is no longer an asset to trade

We’ve all reached levels of delusion based on some of the ideas floated around. Keaschall and Ryan are the only guys I’d consider to extend and one is probably out the door. The problem as some have said about Ober is if he doesn’t bounce back, who are you bidding against when he’s in his mid 30s and his numbers are similar to Kyle Hendricks? Extending Royce when he has proved he can play even 50% of a season? Extend Jeffers? Come on people… the truth is if the reports the Pohlad’s have a significant cash flow problem are true and they won’t spend any more “family money” signing extensions isn’t going to happen and I doubt any potential new owner (unless they’re going to keep Falvey) is going to want the outgoing FO to spend money on guys they (or new FO) even want.

If they were going to go all in, this is maybe my favorite move. Rojas is/could be an exceptional #2 or a dominant reliever. He has rocketed up their system and there’s room still. I would guess his profile at this age is much better than what Mr. Varland’s was. Rodan could be a slightly better version of the best version of Jake Cave we hardly knew ye… I have visions of Varland and France storming into Falvey’s office and saying “F-it, we want out, too!” And threatening to kick his a$$ if he left them here. I think Rojas has a higher ceiling/floor than Abel. #Preposterous

The Twins got 2 of the “consensus” top 5 prospects traded in the deal w/KMcD having Tuh-eeet #2. The market shifted when Cubs, Dodgers, Res Sox didn’t become huge buyers. inwonder with Abel’s delivery of a kick change could work? Abel works up in the zone and that seems to be the thing Falvey/Maki/Rocxo believe in. Hopefully the next (cough cough) group does as well. But 98 up in the zone works well and that’s what he does.
-
Probably directly related to how much $ the Twins kick in. You’re probably not getting a Top 100 guy, but Walked Janek (strong defensive catcher at high A) and Anderson Brito (A+ at age 21) is probably a high octane back of the bullpen arm would be a nice start if they have to pay $30MM to $45MM on his salary.
-
If the expectation was the Twins would carry 50%’ish of the salary, the Twins are saving anything and not getting a ton back if they don’t carry a % of it.

What players in return are teams getting that are impact MLB ready? I don’t know very many respected evaluatirs who have/had Tait outside the Top 100 or not a Top catching prospect. Some fans want a rebuild and you don’t do that by simply trading MLB talent for MLB talent, it’s about future talent. I get you can’t make everyone happy, but Ryan wasn’t expected to be this good and here we are. I’d expect a similar package for Jax and would do it again if the return was similar. Top 100 prospects (or close to) rarely get moved at the deadline and the Twins got 2. Abel was in the 90s at the beginning of the summer.

I don’t understand the hate around the Duran trade. I think when the media says the asking price is 2 high (top 100) prospects dans think we’re getting #1 and #2. i would’ve preferred Painter, but I’d also like to be 6’ tall. Tait’s bat could be 30+ hrs and while I don’t expect him to be the next Cal Raleigh he’s a Top 5 catching prospect in all the minors and could be Top 3 depending on how you feel some others. Abel could be an Ober level pitcher, which any team would take. The Twins arguably got the 2 highest or 2 of the top 4 prospects so far through all trades. Some of our “fan demands” are outrageous. It feels like some of us wouldn’t be happy if Bader went to the Yankees for Judge SU.

Red Sox 13, Twins 1: Is This Selling?
bjorks replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What a real interesting question is what does this team look like a year from now w/w/o Correa in a full on fire sale. I’ve always like Jaren Duran, but this series showed a lot. If C(minus)4 gets moved it would seem Walker Janek would have to be in there depending on how much $ they’ll eat, excuse me buy a prospect. Larnach and Wallner, the later moreso, won’t get too many more chances. Buxton isn’t going anywhere, but should see ERod/Jenkins in CF/LF combo with (hopefully) Wallner in RF. I don’t get real excited about Lee/Rouce on the left and Keaschall/? On the right. Pablo/Ober at the top or Ober at 3 is still good. What gets me at least excited is the bullpen could still be good potentially with Raya (maybe #5), Prielipp, and there’s some very nice prospects available that could make this team similarly competitive, but younger and cheaper w/who Rocco.- 60 replies

Dodgers 4, Twins 3: Checking Out
bjorks replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It’s been almost two hours and it still feels like I got a Jack Dempsey, square-toed kick to the sack. I like Rocco and IMHO I justified every move he made from pitching to base running to hitting. Sometime you just get beat. hindsight is 50/50 and this team has a player who did just that! im encouraged because we competed HARD and lost to a team with ZERO limitations. Also seems as the Sheriff pitched himself to a team, like the Dodgers. And I’m OK with that.- 86 replies

Rushing to the Dodgers for a Catcher
bjorks replied to Nate Palmer's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Cardinals have better options and potentially "cheaper" alternatives than Rushing. Jimmy Crooks (L) probably being the most MLB ready, but Leandro Bernal (switch hitter) is right there too and he'll be Rule 5 eligible. They even have another kid in high A I think.- 10 replies

Twins 8, Cubs 1: Ryan Jeffers, Twins Ambush Cubs
bjorks replied to Steven Trefz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's a fair point and I agree it's 100% on how you/me/we enjoy consuming the game. SIDENOTE: Baseball is my favorite sport and living on the WC with the nice start/end times I've been able to watch 135+ games a year for the past 15 years or so. BUT, my ADHD brain can only handle so much on field "action". I have to hear the game moreso than see it (thanks Vin Skully and AM WCCO). I have the games on as background as much as anything, which is why I focus more on the dialog than on field play. I LOVE (as much as you probably love the gameplay) hearing the game and just the different types of topics and discussions are most important to me. I don't want to see a baseball coach or someone from Driveline or Paul Skenes in an LSU uniform showing me how they through a Splinker. I paid attention when Lopez is calling pitches before they happened and then Plouffe starts making calls. JM has gotten a ton better in the booth from when he started and I think GP could do it full time if he really wanted to.- 66 replies

The FO would need to have identified a potential closer of the future (Jax, Varland) before trading Duran, but I'm not sure Miller (MLB #21) would be available even if it was a SU trade. Dante Nori (OF) and Griffin Burkholder (OF) are 2 young OF's with similar profiles and upside as Crawford. If you can get a Top 50 prospect back it's an easy move to make for someone like Miller. I just don't think you trade from a place of strength (RP) if it's not an overwhelming offer back.

Trading for Wong is simply a cash considerations type move. Meh... With as bad as he is (on top of 2026 C'ing FA market), I'd almost take Vasquez back at $1 - $1.5. You're not going to pay for a #2 and if it's between him and dudes like an Austin Hedges...not gracias. It could be worse, you could have a no-glove C/DH like Garver for another (Player Option) $12M like Seattle does. Garver would be foolish not to opt-in. Unless Cartaya/Camargo improve greatly there aren't many options. The Twins have (kinda) invested in the position, but not at the premium level. I would not want to invest big into a FA as it seems like the better move is to keep swinging (and missing) and hope you can draft/develop a future stud like the Royals (Mitchell, Jensen, Ramirez) and the Cards (Crooks, Bernal, Rodriguez, Campos).

Small sample size, but looking forward, if Clemens proves to be serviceable this year, does he replace Castro in 26? Castro probably wants a multi-year deal with maybe a lower AAV than his $6.4. Clemens won't break the bank and is controllable through 28? I realize it's a stretch, but...

Falvey's promotion, even if it was done knowing the team was about to announce they're selling, he's done exactly what they hired him to do, which is to build a minor league system of developing pitching. Yes, there's more to it and there's certainly warts, but Cease is a Boras client and what a better way to appease Correa and the fan base than to make every effort to get and potentially extend. If you can get cheap quality for potential quality I like the relative known commodity. I'm forced to somewhat pay attention the Suns living in Scottsdale, but if the rumors are true the Ishbia's are the leader in the clubhouse they're going to make a splash (see Kevin Durant). If other rumors are true that former and local players/athletes could be 1%'s you don't think they're (Mauer/Morneau/et al.) going to potentially voice "issues" they had with the Pohlad's is what we perceive as frugalness? Maybe it's wishful thinking, but if the sale is as close as being reported, it's in the hands of legal and Ishbia's stock in the Sox is probably one of the final holdups. Maybe it's not Cease, maybe it's not until the trade deadline, and maybe it's not until next year. Point being is when Mat bought the Suns, they spent money and it's been widely reported, it's monopoly money to them so to speak. This isn't an investment per say, but pure vanity. We need to pray Justin Ishbia buys the Twins. At a minimum the payroll will go back to if not well above $150. Ishbia's are no dummies and getting the local athletes to be a part is genius. Spend some money, use the athletes to help market, and Target Field could be a hard ticket to get.

The Cubs aren't taking 2 cast offs who are salary dumps, despite their needs. No team is taking Paddock without the Twins eating salary or getting a top tier prospect attached IMO. It does have some intrigue with Ballesteros (LH) learning behind someone like Vasquez (RH) for a year. The Cubs would need to probably be sold (and give) Jax a shot at starting, which is something the Twins are most likely not willing to consider. I would rather give up a Festa/Matthews/Morris/Raya than Jax/Duran and you don't have to include cash. Good premise, but you're still in the need for a catcher. Maybe you get Miguel Amaya back also to help balance out one of the 4 prospects

Twins Daily 2025 Top Prospects: #3 Luke Keaschall, INF
bjorks replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I mentioned this last year in the comments on an article about Keaschall. I saw him quite a bit at ASU and I thought one of his bigger traits was his work ethics and he is one of my favorite prospects. He's a "natural" 2B/CF, but obviously until he proves the elbow isn't an issue, he's stuck at 1B. Defensively I wouldn't have any concerns with him at 1B, but he's more valuable as a 2B/3B/OF. The bat probably doesn't profile at 1B, but we did play Arraez there. Pedroia is a pretty decent comp, but IMO he's a smaller Ben Zobrist (TB version). Sadly for me, I think he may be more valuable as a trade chip based on our MLB/MiLB rosters and a ceiling of Pedroia/Zobrist and a floor of 6 other players we have in the Top 20. He's got a shot to be a Top 40-50 (MLB) guy next summer and his value will only increase. Hopefully we keep him, I'd much rather trade some of the other younger prospects who are in that same bucket. -
Do the Fins want a higher ceiling or more quantifiable stats? Even though it's murky, we can still project an MVP-caliber ceiling for Lewis and IMO we have 2-3 guys in the minors who profile what we THOUGHT Larnach could be. The amount of improvement seems to be a pretty wide gap and that's even if Lewis plays 120 games a year. I'd drive the moving truck to Florida for him if that's "all it took". I'd throw in Mercedes or Schobel if I had to.
