  1. No disrespect intended, I loved this guy, but my most vivid memory is of Jones striking out with the bases loaded by swinging through a pitch at his eyes. Can't remember the game or year, but that AB will stay with me forever
  2. Mauer driving the ball with fresh legs is going to be a beautiful sight to behold. I stand by my prediction.
  3. Mauer will hit 25, write it down. If Arcia can out-perform that (WHOO-HOO) then so be it. Hammer will be traded if he's hits 10-15 in the first half. Dozier is probably solid for 15-20. Plouffe will hit 20. Sano will hit 20 in an obscenely low number of PAs. Doumit (not on the list) will hit 15 in a limited role. The second year of Bruno's hitting philosophy will see better hitters driving the ball better and striking out less. Enjoy!
  4. I think there are very few GMs in baseball that, right now, wouldn't prefer Meyer over Price for the next 6-7 years at their relative prices. Even if Price averages out to be a #1 and Meyer averages out to be a strong #3, the value is skewed heavily towards Alex (15-25M difference!) The exceptions would be the teams that spend money like water due to sick revenue sources that the Twins just don't have and can thus afford the better pitcher at a lower value.
  5. IMO this type of deal would be a huge mistake. You built something with Dozier last year, don't sell that for a risky move pitcher. If you're going to trade him it needs to be for a proven, reliable exchange.
  6. You are correct, I did NOT remember his former success in the pen until you reminded me. Why on Earth don't they ramp him back up to pen duty? He has either failed or been mediocre as a starter. Let's keep that pipeline of fresh young pen aces coming.
  7. Am I the only one who thinks that Mauer being the primary 1st baseman might actually boost his HR numbers? He could realistically bulk up quite a bit now that he doesn't have the much more physically and athletically demanding position behind the plate. Mobility isn't much of a factor at all for a 1B, so combine 20 pounds of extra muscle with Mauer's awesome hands and bat speed and maybe we're in for 25 HR this year? Also, fresh knees mean a stronger base when hitting, so even in his current physique he could hit for much more power. I am going on record right now that he breaks 20 HR in 2014, maybe approaches 30 HR.
  8. I disagree with the initial post, Escobar does have the bat and glove to be a nice utility IF. And remember, Dozier is probably 50-50 to end up back at SS anyway, with Flori back in AAA.
  9. I agree for the most part. I think they will bring in Hughes and bring back Pelf. Meyer will be up with the team out of ST or at the break at the latest. Hughes Meyer Gibson Deduno Pelf That is enough to get you to the playoffs with a decent offense and maybe win in the playoffs with a great offense (something we could easily have in 1-2 years). What I like most about that group is that they all could go out and reasonably throw a gem against many teams. Some of the guys we were trotting out the last 2-3 years we were hoping they could just be OK and take it as a good day. Just as important, our first backups in AAAA are now Worley and Diamond, two guys who have shown they can succeed at the MLB level and have the potential to bounce back after a post injury year. Whether May develops or not, at least 1 of the A-level kids will turn into a very solid starter 2-4 years down the line as well. Sign one "B-B+" free agent SP like Hughes and another "C-C+" free agent SP like Pelf and I will consider it a winning offseason.
  10. I predict three pat responses: 1) See, I told you so! The Twins front office and organization as a whole is great and well respected. 2) All this story does is confirm my opinions that the Twins are still mired back in the dark ages, completely out of touch with the reality of modern baseball. 3) It's nice to hear praise coming from an unlikely source, but I am still frustrated with the rebuild and won't be happy until we field a winner. Variations please. P.S I enjoyed the article, thanks for writing it.
  11. Come on John, we'll have three aces locked up before Christmas, so no worries here.
  12. Before his terrible knee injury Kubel was an above average defending corner OFer. I feel bad for him and the organization that he suffered that injury. Could you imaging if he had progressed normally and been an all-star and been signed to a long term contract for us?
  13. Ok, full disclosure, I'm very drunk and eating Aldi brand cool ranch tortilla chips, so I may be missing something here. How is playing Parm or Colobello better than playing Morneau? Most of us agree we want to win now AND field a great team in the near future. So how does refusing to acknowledge Morneau would be an upgrade over the afore mentioned gentlemen accomplish that? I get that you probably want to give those guys at-bats, but there are at-bats to be had in RF and DH (with Arcia). Everyone here is constantly ragging on the team for not upgrading the talent NOW, NOW, NOW. This is an easy move to upgrade 1B. If you don't like it, fine, it is certainly debatable. But don't lump Morneau in with the "drek" we would alternatively run out there.
  14. He is (was) slightly below average in OPS, HR, and slugging. He is average in...average. His defense is probably average to slightly above average. The point of my post was more to observe that Morny would be a most probably upgrade over Chris or Parm.
  15. Nolasco is fine, as long as he's not the top guy we bring in. A lot of this offseason hinges on where they think Plouffe will play when "the mighty stick" becomes a major leaguer. I think they sort of project him (Plouffe) over to 1st base or RF, so don't expect the Twins to add any depth at those positions. Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to have a Buxton, Hicks, Plouffe outfield when we win the World Series.
  16. But he's not a "bad" player, he's an average one (right now). An average player with a track record of greatness is far better than what Coloballo or Parm would bring to the table, no? Not saying Parm can't turn things around or Chris can't rake at the MLB level after some time, but let's be honest, Morney would be a way more sure bet for "average player" at first base next year. If you want to bring in someone better that's another story, but I think that 100% of TR's effort should be spent in bringing in starting pitching.
  17. Before he totally obliterated his knee in AAA? Kubel was on track to be a force in MLB. He's probably not anything more than a flyer of a DH at this point, but I would prefer him to Doumit (with Pinto catching) or Hammer (with Arcia playing in left).
  18. Great question. Logically it would seem like it could be up to the length of their current contract, but for logistical reasons it might only be 1 season + 1 offseason?
  19. How all of TD could miss the most obvious and most important offseason move is beyond me. Pitching is nice, and a bat at 1st base would be ok. But... Why is no one asking how we're going to bring Butera back into the fold? Come on guys, pull your heads out of the sand.
  20. No business in the world publishes it's innermost, "nuts and bolts" research and methodology for the public and other businesses to pick apart and steal. Walmart's slogan and mission statement is "We save you money so you can live better." Do you think the leaders of a world-class, multi-billion dollar company truly don't have thousands of hours in cutting edge business research on the books to help them run it? Of course they do. Then why do we only get a simple platitude? Because that's for the public to see. Do you honestly expect to see TR give a press conference and break down the methodology, planning, and strategy he used for a specific transaction? Why, so the guy he fleeced out of a prospect for Drew Butera can look back and see exactly how and why he was fleeced and not repeat he mistake? Meaningless platitudes are all you are SUPPOSED to get.
  21. To me the entire argument can be summed up in this phrase. The ORG is most certainly aware of any possible statistic out there and could/would use those stats if it suited them. But no, their use is probably not cutting edge as a whole.
  22. No offense intended here, but I've never much liked the line of thought that runs..."so and so was too old for that league, so his nice performance doesn't mean much..." Isn't it possible that some guys just peak or figure things out later in life than others? I know I'm not a professional athlete, but I've noticed that I definately fall into that catagorie as far as social and intellectual things go. Is it more unusual for physical skills to develop later in life? How about the mental/psychological side of the game? Or is this more about valuable years of MLB service time in their prime? If a prospect makes it to the majors at 28 rather than 23, of course they will have less productive MLB years to contribute to their team. It just seems like the goal is to develop talent rather than worrying about the longevity of that talent, after all, even the 22 year old stud all star is only 1 injury away from ending his career.
  23. One of my favorite memories in Twins history is Hocking snapping a single over the third baseman with a flick of his wrist. He wasn't an All-Star, but he played hard the Twins way.
  24. Radke was a great player over his career. He won 20 games in a single year...for the Twins. Santana won the Cy Young in a year he won only 16 games. Take a moment to digest that one. Radke deserves to be inducted into the Twins HOF. Not the MLB HOF, but the Twins HOF? YES!
  25. I kinda like that Buxton is scuffling a little bit with his .227. A little adversity is necessary to realize true greatness potential. Not that I don't love that he's been dominant at every other point so far...
