  1. Its awesome how quickly he harnessed his control issues, and as his FIP suggests hes been very good this year despite a high babip and ERA. I think the next big step for him is to gain more command of his pitches. He throws 10-20 waste pitches a start still, things like a curveball that bounces 2 feet in front of the plate to the 9th hitter who has a .190 avg, or grooved meatball when he is in control of the at bat. Once he cuts that down he has the stuff to be a legit middle of the rotation pitcher and work past the 7th inning.
  2. High fastballs and backdoor cutters made Hughes last year, and now he isn't locating either well. He has always been a tinkerer to a fault and that appears to have happened again since he is throwing a bunch of 2 seamers down in the zone now going away from what was his strength. Kinda surprised he didn't get on the Neil Allen changeup wagon, for as much as he relies on fastballs its seems like he would really benefit from a change.
  3. Yay finally another win, I was starting to jones after the day and half dry spell!
  4. Lol Escobar standing against the green monster.
  5. When did we acquire this He-man who keeps mashing pitches?
  6. Lemonade is already begging for spirits no need to get beer involved. Now a good snakebite with a bitter stout and some dry hard cider sign me up.
  7. Why would anyone do that to perfectly fine beer?
  8. Good defensive inning for Danny, hopefully he can carry that over to the plate.
  9. Herman isn't here for the dingers, can't be messing this stuff up.
  10. Same ground ball 3 times, 2 for singles, 1 for a double play, sinker ballers luck.
  11. Ha Blue Jays announcers saying their pitchers should go take a shot and calm down if they are struggling in the first.
  12. Seems like he had more success hitting into the shift than he has had trying to pull it. I haven't watched all the games but I can think of 2 times he has pulled the ball with authority (the homer and the bases clearing double into the gap). Pretty much everything else pulled is already the grounder to 2nd they shift him for.
  13. I think hes trying to pull the ball with no one on, and hes just not very good at pulling the ball. His swing generates no backspin and little loft so usually when he squares a pitch up its a laser somewhere, that laser has a better chance to find turf if its slicing into the gap in left opposed to right at the right fielder. When he really needs a hit hes reverting to inside outing it and having normal Mauer successes. Ill take 10 singles the other way over 2 doubles to right. The rbis are there because Dozier and Hunter are there to be driven in, he can do that with his old successful approach just fine.
  14. Wow that is a major difference, nice article. I have no evidence to support it but I think when hes got no one on he is trying to pull the ball (and failing because he has zero loft or backspin when he pulls the ball) and then he goes back to his old Mauer ways when there are guys on. The walks are seem indicative of pitchers coming after him a lot more, yet he isn't able to translate seeing more strikes into driving more strikes. Is it because he is over pursuing them in an attempt to pull the ball to fit the stereotypical 1B profile? If anything his current line shows the success of Dozier/ Hunter getting on in front of him and that he can drive in runs without traditional power numbers, however they are also inflated from having 6 rbis in 2 abs. I want the old Mauer back, slash liners to the opposite field and back up the middle, stay patient, and play to your strengths instead of pursuing your weaknesses.
  15. Ya that pitch in particular but hes not hitting the edges of the zone with anything like he was. Extreme fly ball pitcher + too much of the plate = NYY era Phil Hughes.
  16. I hope Tonkin gets the 8th and not Boyer.
  17. You can consume those? I assumed they were halloween decorations.
  18. He was a good hitter with superb bat speed tho, Hicks is nubbing balls 40 feet.
  19. The pronounced leg kick is a nice timing tool for Hicks, but I don't think hes ever going to hit anything doing that Gary Sheffield tomahawk chop.
  20. Cmon guys enough with the timer! Just let me pace around back here for a bit.
  21. Hanley with the Serena Williams look.
  22. Watching Pelfry pitch this year is a very awkward experience. 90% of the time I am ready to fall asleep, 5% I am terrified, and 5% of the time I am flummoxed he didn't give up a run.
  23. Give him the 9th Gibson is shredding them at this point.
