  1. If everything works out, that's a serious glut of players coming next year. It will be nice if the Falvey hiring really does pan out in the Twins' ability to develop pitchers. I'm not saying anything new, but there is definitely a difference between having talent and converting that talent to useful productivity.
  2. Jose Mijares certainly didn't look like someone who purged regularly
  3. Congratulations, 5 years in internet time is about 1000 years in the real world
  4. What is the likelihood that he even sticks at short? Doesn't every position player start at short?
  5. In the age we live in, in which prospects are monitored from high school, to the draft and through their minor league career, and there is such a cognizance of other teams' prospects and their progress, it's so easy to get impatient with what seems like slow development. The most striking part of this piece for me was that Kohl Stewart is still only 22 years old.
  6. 9 pages on a utility player claimed on waivers is a sure sign of the offseason. This is the type of thing a good FO does, IMO. IF the pitching isn't coming along, you give them a nudge by shoring up the defense. Maybe Adrianza doesn't start, nearly ever, but if there is a groundballer on the mound late in the game? Why not? It's just one at bat a game, maybe, and everyone else in the org has played short at some point, so if you want to pinch hit for him later, you can do that too.
  7. I think catching up to pitches is something a player can do with practice (this has no basis in firsthand knowledge, it's just something that seems like something you adjust to, rather than an innate talent) and Park didn't get a chance to develop that ability. Maybe outside of the spotlight, he will make the necessary adaptations. Yhis time of year, why not at least try to be optimistic.
  8. Heck, Puerto Rico even has De Leon, so it has all the almost Twins as well
  9. The Rob Antony era: Abad+Nunez+Nolasco+Meyer - Mejia+Santiago+ Busenitz + cash D-:
  10. I think Park was more exposed because there is a redundancy of players like him still on the market. Either he doesn't get claimed, or if he does. the resources can be reallocated, even for someone like Carter. Less to do with Santana, more to do with the market.
  11. I seem to recall there being a few murmurs of trade interest in Park last year, so perhaps there will be some sort of return for him in the next 10 days. I feel like the Twins were surprised they won the bidding for him last year, and didn't really anticipate needing to find a spot for him. It's possible that the Twins are higher on Vargas (I happen to be a big fan of a switch hitting DH) and there is no other intent than to signal that they prefer Vargas and there isn't another shoe left to drop. I will miss his sweet forearm tats though.
  12. Yeah, I saw that looking back on it. I don't have any problem with the signing either. I had just fallen out of touch with him. I had fallen victim to the Lattroy Hawkins syndrome that so many Twins fans had. He had been a bad starter and I hadn't bothered to see how he was as a reliever, and it turns out he was pretty good. The more arms the better, I say.
  13. I think it's good for me. I'm looking at him with fresh eyes, and not remembering him from the Rockies/Reds.
  14. Here is my scouting report on Matt Belisle I was pretty sure he had retired, like 3 years ago.
  15. I think insisting that the only change in the roster from last year is Suzuki leaving and Castro arriving doesn't tell the whole story. They are also replacing rookie Buxton with full year of experience Buxton. They have Kepler as a starter for the full season. If for no other reason than the first two months won't be a complete s*show, the Twins will win more games. Last year, I put them at 74 games. I'm still all aboard the "Hector Santiago is the most overrated, and perhaps might be the worst pitcher in the Twins rotation" train, but I think that costs only about 2-3 games. I will go with an optimistic 72.
  16. This statue will bring the same intensity TK does to the broadcast booth
  17. IMO it's much more challenging to develop pitching. I think a key going forward is how willing the new FO will be to deal from strength to patch their weaknesses.
  18. I think the killer is this: Santiago has been buoyed by having two of the best outfielders in the game behind him, while Nolasco spent a good deal of time with Josh Willingham, Jason Kubel and Miguel Sano in the corners. Nolasco's peripherals have always been better than Santiago's, and when he went out west to pitch for a team with a good defense behind him, well, his numbers outpaced what Santiago had done. It's obviously a small sample size, but I would be very surprised if Santiago outpitches Nolasco in 2017. And then Antony still added a prospect. I still like the Nunez/Abad deals, so I will give him a C- for his tenure.
  19. Sure, we'll see. I'm willing to be patient, but I just wanted to get my diatribe against Santiago off my chest If the Twins can't or won't supplant him by the end of May, then something is seriously wrong. I don't have a problem with Grossman. Even if he is a bad fielder, according to my eye, he works harder than most of the other position players. Leading by example and all that. For a team this young, I think that could be a good thing.
  20. I do not blame any of this on the new FO, but that doesn't mean I can't be disappointed. I think the only tangible thing I can say that I disagree with those two on (and you, it sounds like) is their evaluation of Santiago. I would rather see Mejia make the roster ahead of Santiago, and start in the rotation. This is a whole other can of worms, but looking at their periphs, I think the Twins would be better off with Nolasco than Santiago. In short, Santiago is so bad, IMO, that he was not even worth the 8m in a bad market, as he is a less desirable option than anything else the Twins have. If there are other teams that would value Santiago at 8m/yr, I hope that he is being marketed to those teams. I accept that there is probably more to the plan that I just don't know about, and I hope that the FO can execute it. I really don't like Hector (as a pitcher, I'm sure he's very nice)
  21. I like your style, Mike Sixel. That said, I admire the optimism of the other posters in this thread who have expressed it. I have no real qualms about the offense, but I am distressed exclusively about the pitching. How does it get better? I don't have a good answer. How can anyone feel positive about a team that is willing to trade for AND pay 8m to Hector Santiago?
  22. IMO, the primary task is to improve the pitching, which is why Castro was added. He was a cheaper way to raise the sea level of the staff than buying 5 new starters. Unfortunately, they still have a long way to go, and no way to get there (as far as I can tell). I'm never in favor of the Twins buying a FA starting pitcher (Ervin Santana, one year of Phil Hughes and garbage is the recent track record) and there isn't much hope for a rotation's worth of help coming up through the organization. There is still time for Berrios, perhaps Gonsalves and Jay, but is there anyone else that we feel strongly about w/in the next 3-4 years? The best way to get healthy in the farm system fast is via trade, and it seemed that Dozier was the best trade chip. There is no market, so now what? Falvey/Levine were brought in, in part, I believe, because thy may be more inclined to make painful decisions. To get the Twins over the hump, I think they will need to make one fairly soon. Looking at the return for Adam Eaton as a reference (I don't know if the valuations would be the same) do we think the long term future looks brighter with Byron Buxton on the roster, or with whatever bounty he might elicit in a trade? I think the latter. I hope the FO is still out on the trade market, and are willing to dig a little deeper, as much as it might hurt.
  23. IF you put any stock in it, Duffey has the highest WAR/100 innings projection of any Twins starter, according to FanGraphs. IF you put any stock in it
  24. Because this is a Twins fan message board. Confirmation bias
  25. I will say this much: I believe that Dave has a source he adamantly believes within one of the organizations, and that source remains optimistic, and there may even be continued communications. I used to be a meteorologist and I know better than anyone that, whatever the indications may be, they are not necessarily conclusively predictive. So, Dave may be accurate, AND it might be accurate that the trade never happens. There is always a little bit of the forecaster in the forecast.
