  1. That is nice you did that list. The problem with ISO though is as follows per fangraphs It takes a long time for a player’s ISO to have predictive power going forward; a sample size of 550 plate appearances is recommended to draw any conclusions. In other words, if Albert Pujols has a .550 ISO two weeks into the season, it’s way too early to expect that to continue. There are a quite a few players on the list who only made it up for a cup of coffee.
  2. I have no idea what the Twins use for advanced metrics. I would safely bet the do not involve the "wins" categories of metrics but those that speak to skill levels. Since Ryan runs thins past Goins they at least use him as a red flag sort of thing. I know they done have a person with a degree in statistics. I really doubt that any organization does. I believe they hire a lot of geeks with a love for baseball that want to work in baseball. I doubt there is a shortage of them out there. It doesn't take a whole lot to understand statistics. Any degree that has any sort of research component should give you the knowledge needed. There is no degree program for understanding baseball other than the school of hard knocks. Can anyone tell me how Epstien gets credit for building the Red Sox when he took over a team that had 92 wins? It but needed a tweak.
  3. There is a concept that you ought to seriously consider. The Butera trade is and always will be a separate event from a Morneau trade. Whatever Ryan got for Butera was a bonus. Butera plays a completely different position than Morneau. The only similarity that you can have between Morneau and Butera is that they both were employees of the same organization. One player and what happened has absolutely nothing to do with the other. The market price for Morneau is not determined by a backup minor league catcher. The second concept is there is no value in obtaining another low ceiling player.
  4. A reincarnated Billy Martin couldn't get this team to win. The manager of this collection doesn't make much difference. When Hicks was sent down people were not blaming the manager he did not develop. When the pitchers throws poorly, it is on the pitchers and the people who signed them.
  5. Albers will pitch against the Tigers. I am sure that Martinez will be batting rather than Verlander.
  6. This is not a personal attack but it does illuminate my point. Where has your praising been for the failed signing? After all, it is only money. No, when the money is spent poorly the fans will complain and call the front office names.
  7. I have yet to see a single post praising the Twins for signing Nishi. If the Twins sign a player and they are a bust nobody says at least they tried.
  8. Of course they can send down a RP, they have a proven emergency relief guy in Carroll. They have a designated bunter/pitcher.
  9. Invariable it starts out somebody saying something negative about the Twins. Somebody points out the flaw in their arguement. They go round and round a couple times. Invariably they degenerate. Then there comes the complaint that the Twins are old school, don't use sabermetrics, don't inovate. Somebody asks for a definition of this line of stuff and the poster ducks it. The same argument will happen over and over
  10. I would assume that any free agent would know how the team has performed recently and who is currently on the team. They would also be smart enough to know who was on the teams that were competitive are pretty much no longer there. It would be the responsibity of the team to sell the free agent on the prospects of the team's future talent, potential of the players on the big league squad. It is not defending Ryan to say the free agent is more likely to go to a winning team. It is a statement of obserable behavior of athletes. You can dismiss it, but itwinning is a huge factor in athlete's choices.
  11. Lets try this again. Spending money guarantees nothing. Darrin can point out the teams that have not won with spending money to prove that point. He did not say in there that a team should not spend money. You can point out all the teams that have won by spending large sums of money. It means you can win, doesn't mean you will win by spending a lot of money. The ability to assess talent will win. The ability to judge how well players will play in their"decline" years will continue the winning. If you wish to extrapolate that I said the team didn't win because of Drew Butera I am at a loss for words. "2 pieces of dead wood can hurt the roster" should be fairly clear. I guess I was very wrong. That I used only ONE example from a collection of bad players, you go where you did with it. Do I have to go through the entire roster to satisfy you? The Dodgers had no choice but to use taking on salary to improve, they have a poor farm system. No assets to trade to improve.
  12. Do people not read what Darrin was responding to? The answer to the question is talent wins. The hard part is assembling the talent. Regardless, the size of the payroll matters didlysquat. It iswhat you sign and for how long. There are still only 25 roster spots.2 pieces of dead wood can hurt the roster. Don't believe me? Use the search and type incatcher and Drew. The key on the free agency bit is to figure out which players are going to decline later rather than sooner.
  13. No, it was a question. It is not a matter of truth in regards to the Twins as not trusting your analysis. You have used whatever single stat in the past to suit your purpose in propmoting a point regardless of situation.
  14. Pay 4.5 million for what? A less than C prospect? An A prospect. You have no clue as to what was offered. Do you think the organization should pay that much money to get a prospect the equivalent of Marty Popham? When buying a prospect, it should be worth the money.
  15. If the team trade Willingham with no clear plan for replacement how lit up is this board? Go sign a free agent? Yup, that net would suck. You could only trade 2/3 of your starting outfield. The offer for Revere would have been better than the offer for Willingham. Of course the people reporting that there were offers have no specifics on the offers. Imagine that.
  16. Some reference. Last year there were no hitters with multi year contracts traded at the deadline. Pence and Victorino, wouldn't say the long term haul was great for the trading club. Did you expect more than a c prospect?
  17. First off if we agreed on what Correi is you wouldn't have bothered to post anything. Mackey , as well as many others, had low expectations of Correia. Any game that Correia pitches in that allows the rest of the team a chance to win would please him. Doesn't make him have a man crush on Correia. Your interpretation of Mackey is flawed. If Terry Felton magically became 30 years younger and pitched to an ERA of 4.25, I would be pleasantly surprised. I would not think he was very good most of the time. I was pleasantly surprised my property tax bill went down $100. It does not mean I like my property taxes. There is no need to rehash the flaws of your "evidence" nor defend it.
  18. Twins GM Terry Ryan says it was "just happenstance" that this offseason saw the club acquire a series of groundball-inducing righties (Vance Worley, Mike Pelfrey, and Kevin Correia), Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press reports. Ryan has a background in what Berardino describes as "old-school scouting principles." Nevertheless, the GM says that he does not make any decisions without consulting his statistics guru, Jack Goin, whose official title is manager of major league administration and baseball research. Found that nugget while trying to find articles I read so long ago. Wouldn't want anyone to blast away that I didn't accurately cite references.
  19. Maybe Correia winds up being a serviceable fifth starter. January 22 Mackey opinion His December 15 opinion was better /sportswire/Mackey_Twins_newest_starter_Kevin_Correia_brings_little_upside121512
  20. Macky may have said something long ago in praise of Correia. From the article it looks like there is no sudden revalation to Mackay that Correia is what he is. So your line that Mackey and others have been operating under the illusion that Correia was a "pleasant surprise" and has generally been pitching well for the Twins. is totally a fabrication of Macky's opinion of Correia. Macky attributed the good start of Correa to the advantage pitchers have in cold weather and that teams had not scouted him well. That is a totally reasonable explaination. Your "evidence" proves what? winning record three months later as a criteria? Hardly an accurate way to portray the quality of the batters he faced at the time was the w/l record of the team three months later.
  21. It is in what way is this season any different than any other Correia has had? What makes this so important. If there is no change than the statistics are really kind of meaningless fluff. Correia is what he generally is. So if your point is that he is not a very good pitcher, that has been known and discussed. That he has no trade value as a deadline deal is your point? The simple statistic he has a 2 year contract would suffice unless you know of a comparable pitcher dealt to a contender in the last few years on a multiple year contract.
  22. 9 starts against teams in the top 14 offenses in terms of runs scored. 3 quality starts. 4 wins 4 losses. era 5.43 Washington was above .500 when Correia faced them, hence the jab. In the game of baseball it is not who you face, but when you face them. Correia is what he is. He appears to be the pitcher he generally is. Averages 6 innings a start, era over 4. It would be more useful to know what the Twins saw in Correia that they could improve. That would take someone who can analyze what Correia does while on the mound. Parker Hagerman is about the only one here who provides that kind of insight.
  23. I have found a lot of inaccurate statistics by the negative posters lately. The comment I made is questioning if the content he posted is accurate. As you use my phrasing in your post I find it a little hard to see it as an evil way to phrase things.
  24. So what. Correia was never going to be traded this year. He is not the type of pitcher you would make a deadline deal for. Somehow I bet you looked up each one of correia's starts and double checked the record of the team he faced to make sure they were above .500.
