  1. You believe they might do something yet have not even someone else writing a whisper that there is even a problem in any level of baseball. Different cultures and temperments between baseball and football. MLB has other things to worry about besides problems that do not exist.
  2. I understand people like to make complex situations simple. To do so much detail gets left out. Free agency is not like going to the market and buying a slave. There are two classes of players on the open market. Those that many teams want and those that might be expensive for what you get. The ones that many want have choices and can have a bit of insanity with the contract. The latter is sort of like buying a used car. Either case is not a sure thing. The parable does not address the situation of the servant who spent the money lavishly and ended up with nothing. Salary cap sports have nothing in common with baseball. Wide receivers sucked so the Vikings spent their available cash on Jennings. There was no money for the defense. The Wild spent where they did and had to give up Clutterbuck and other players for little or nothing. They did better last year. No hardware
  3. Yahoo says he signed with the A's. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/punto-agrees-1-contract-athletics-195343107--mlb.html Will this end the Beane is a genius talks?
  4. Yup. but that is what it is going to take to get a FA pitcher
  5. 1. So flirting with the division lead before faltering to a 79 win team makes you a lousy team? If this is the average fan opinion most teams are screwed. 2. Find me a report that said another team offered Bourn and Loshe a contract elsewhere of the same length. 3. Yes many teams made pickups. How many of them were highly ranked? All teams sign free agents. How many of them sign the top tier? KC had to trade for top level pitching talent to get to 86-76. I suppose there is a large fan base out there that take everything literally so Ryan would need to spend a half a day defining every word said. There are players that would really help your club, there are players that were little better than replacements. Which type of player when people, not just GMs, are talking about when they say they should go out and get a free agent?
  6. Spending money an Arroyo would at least signal to the baseball world the Twins are serious about spending to add talent. While he is a mid rotation guy, th is a step in the right direction. A much better option than Pelfrey
  7. From Passan 16. A.J. Burnett, SP: On one hand, he led baseball in strikeout rate among starters and paired that with an absurd 56.5 percent groundball rate. On the other, he says he only wants to go back to Pittsburgh and doesn’t seem to mind killing his free-agent value. To each his own. There have been multiple other reports saying the same thing on Burnett. http://triblive.com/sports/pirates/4740670-74/burnett-pirates-season#axzz2fMCrLDBa
  8. The Twins could sign Molina as he is available. That would put to rest the debate what difference pitch framing makes in a game.
  9. 1. Age is an arbitrary thing 2. Average fastball velocity is arbitrary. Movement is a lot more important. Did Hoey blow it by people 3. K/9 >8 is fairly meaningless when the splatter rate of the offerings in between the outs leads to multiple runs. See some of the average era by these people.
  10. Point 1. I guess you would have to say that Bush, unlike most of the middle east coups, couldn't find any way to have someone else do the fighting. If they would have armed the Kurds they could have probably avoided a lot of maimed Americans in Iraq. Then Turkey would be worried because they have a large Kurdish population. 2. What brought the West out the dark ages? The ability to subjugate other populations. How long have women been equals in the West. Has not happened yet.
  11. The Palestinaian and Israel have gone on since long before 2000
  12. Considering the core of the fundamentalist religion, male dominance and kill those that are different than me, have been in place for a millennium your real answer for an end game ought to be an interesting one If every form of government that was brutal to some portion of the population was wiped out by a magic wand there would be very few governments left. Governments removed were as brutal to others as the governments that replaced them
  13. First off the big if had odds on it about like buying one ticket for 4 big lotteries and winning them all. Scouting and statistics could tell you that was not going to happen.
  14. Is the data from Pitchf/x and the like showing where in the strike zone the pitchers throw and what pitches get hit more useful in assessing a pitcher than the actual statistics?
  15. Kuroda made 15 mill last year. If he accepted the offer it would be a cut in pay. Is there any club going to give up a draft pick for a short term gain? Only if they signed one or two others off the list. It puts Kuroda in a tough spot and most likely accepting the offer, thus a win for the Yankees. For many on this list it would be a way for the club to have the player for another year without painful negotiation.
  16. Embassies in Africa and Peru were a half world away and they still went aftr them. But you are right about you can't fix the hate your neighbor thing. See the Shia-Sunni bloodshed over the years. A good deal of the problems in Africa and the Middle East comes from Britain in that when they left the lines drawn as boundries had little to do with the actual people living there.
  17. US support of the Taliban followed the Muslim decree of the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Innocent people killed by the US. Far less than what was killed by the Taliban as previously cited. AL Awlaki was called moderate by the Times and other news organizations. By actions and preachings, he was not.
  18. 20 years ago was the first attempt at bombing the world trade center. They did not go away. Current actions have not exterminated them, but it does more than doing nothing.
  19. Imagined injustice will work fine to promote hatred. The fundamentalist will always hate what is not them. The U.S . fits the bill whether or not they are meddling in any countries affairs.
  20. I have a little trouble believing someone who is predicting the Astros and the Padres to sign free agents
  21. 2013 Top 50 Free Agents With Predictions: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com He got the easy ones right last year
  22. The list of atrocities committed by the Taliban to women, children, and anyone who is not one of them is long. Two examples. How the Taliban slaughtered thousands of people Minority Afghans tell Taliban atrocities - chicagotribune.com Al-Awlaki was nowhere to be found for the Muslim people of those communities. No statements condemning the slaughter. To label him a moderate is (I can't think of a statement or word that isn't banned by TD).
  23. Honorable wish. The people of Afghanistan who were not Taliban would have liked that starting in 1996
  24. Yeah,I do not disagree with you, but how many are in the hall because they could play defense.
  25. You still can't answer how accurate SIERA is. It gives you a ballpark figure what an ERA might be. So to say it is the best metric. It really doesn't measure anything in terms of future success. It fails by definition of a metric. But use it anyway to say one pitcher was better than the other. BTW, one study showed that after 200 innings all the metrics were about the same. Johnson. Chips in the elbow. 2 stints on the dl for triceps issues. One season lost due to shoulder inflammation, and one TJ. Only 2 seasons where he pitched more than 30 games. I never said he is injury prone. I bring up the statistic that he does not pitch for a whole season. You take it to mean what you want. Johnson has had 2 great years of pitching as has Jimenez . Jimenez has had 1 bad year and 3 above average years. A mid 3 WAR pitcher is a number 2 on most staffs. Not pitching at all gives you a number 6 starter. An icentive based contract with it vesting for IP would be good. Benadino said his agent wants a multi year contract. He is out of luck that Moreno might not be a free spender on pitchers
